Buy, Sell or Trade / Dog fence sections
December 07, 2015, 04:27:33 PM
I want to expand the dog pen we use when our family comes to visit (most bring all their pets, and we are a pet-lovin' family!)
The fence we use now is made from the 6 foot tall panels with chain link that are pretty standard. If you have a few sections or a fence you'd like to sell, please let me know. Thanks! 374-2567

The Coffee Shop / Found dog in Howard
August 08, 2013, 07:56:57 AM
There was a GIANT yellow dog at my house this morning. He looks like a lab/pit cross. He is a neutered male and extremely friendly. He played with my two little tiny dogs and they had a good morning, but I had to call the city to pick him up. He kept jumping in the work-crew's van and running through the new shop getting in the way. He loaded up in every vehicle that he could get in the door of, so I know he wanted to go home.
I figure he came in with a truck getting water and slipped his chain (it looked like he was used to wearing a collar, but none was on him). He let me put a chain around his neck, but then drug me across the yard like I was on skis, so I took it off.
At any rate, he is definitely not a dog they will keep since he's part pit - so please, if you know where this big sweet fellow belongs, have them go get him SOON!
(He is not Donnie's dog and he is not Connie's dog either)

Uncle Jack will be celebrating his 91st birthday on Sunday, July 18.  He and Lulu don't get away from home, but would sure love to hear from any/all of you; so if you have a moment, please send him a birthday card or letter.  It would mean a lot.
Thanks!  Joanna

I am a little slow, but thought I'd remind you all that use Howard water, the city is flushing out the fire hydrants tomorrow (Thursday). If you have good clothes in the laundry, you may want to take care of it today because water will probably be a little cloudy for a couple days afterward.

I don't intend to use this post to complain about water quality folks, just to remind you to take care of what you can today to save some stress tomorrow. HA!

We had a great time at the Howard Chamber steak fry tonight! The food was delicious, and the shade trees and the breeze at the lake made it really nice, and very few bugs! There was Snickers ice cream bars for desert too, a treat from Julie & Patrick at Batson's.  I'll put a link to pictures on here in a few minutes.

We discussed the Fair Parade (10:30 on Sat, July 17)
We discussed the Elk River Festival (Sat, Sept 25)

I learned something too. In Kansas, stores don't have to post if their gasoline has ethanol in it as long as it is 10% or less. That means you could be buying ethanol gas and not even know it.  10% is a lot of ethanol if you're running a small engine (mowers & the like) or if you have an older vehicle. I was glad to learn that P&J's does not sell any gas with ethanol in it and never will. I'm sure there are other stores in the area that have "real" gas too, but if it's important to you, you'll have to ask since they don't have to post anything about it.

You get more for your money when you shop at home!

The Coffee Shop / Wood Bees
June 06, 2010, 11:31:42 AM
Wood bees. I have lost the knack of catching them in the act, but evidence of them is starting to really get on my nerves! I swat them with a tennis racket when I see them, and I know to fill their holes with caulk when I find them around the house. But these are up in the rafters of a car-port where I can't reach. Anyone have any deterrent ideas?

I just read on my water bill that Howard City dog tags are due April 1. "Bring rabies vac paper"
Just thought I'd throw it out there as a reminder...  even farm dogs need vaccinations  ;)

The Coffee Shop / Table Setting
February 06, 2010, 11:13:27 AM
Yay! The Table Setting is set for March 27th and it will be at the Moline School this year.  I've been the last few years and it is really a treat to see all the fancy and funny tables people make up.
I put a notice in the Events section and will try to keep it updated, but just wanted to ramble on a little.

If you may be interested but are intimidated, let me tell you that everyone feels that way the first time.  Some of the tables are elegant and traditional, some are themes (like Easter or Cowboy) and some are just fun, like kiddy birthdays or picknic on the beach.  Tables can be set by one person, a couple good friends or a group project.  We have had tables where one person provided the dishes and another setup and did decorations ~ so if you have a good idea and would like to help out, I'd sure like to see what you come up with!

We are having Prime Rib again this year and the food will be delicious! Tickets will be $25. Also, Traci's Trends is providing a fashion show for all to enjoy.

People who set the tables get first shot at tickets, so when the sales start we expect it to fill quickly.

The Coffee Shop / Park decorations
November 08, 2009, 12:52:10 PM
Someone put a scarecrow at the park yesterday.  He obviously ignored the park rules because he was still there this morning.  I saw him from my window yesterday and thought it was a child.  Cute!

The Coffee Shop / 5 cents a label could add up quickly!
November 03, 2009, 11:42:14 AM
It was briefly mentioned before in the New Dollars thread, but I want to remind everyone to save the bar codes from Our Family brand packages.  There is a box at Family Market to collect them, near the soda fountain counter. The school can get 5 cents each when these are turned in.  The program runs through July 2012.

The Coffee Shop / Catalpa sphinx worms
August 25, 2009, 07:38:08 AM
I have some lovely catalpa worms that are supposed to be good for fish bait.
Anyone want to come pick some? ::) I'd be tickled pink to get rid of the creatures. :P

I read at http://www.ag.auburn.edu/enpl/bulletins/catalpasphinx/catalpasphinx.htm and looks like I will probalby kill them with the same stuff I'm using for grubs and ants and fleas now... but not while they're on the trees.
Nasty things keep dropping their bb size pellets on my pretty sidewalk.  >:(
Anyhow, I don't fish, but if you're hankering for some fresh bait, bring your ladder and come gather some up 8) :-* :)

The Coffee Shop / Howard Chamber welcome booklet
August 19, 2009, 12:12:12 PM
The Chamber is working on making a "welcome" booklet to provide to new area residents.
We're hoping to get a lot of info that would be helpful to people new to the area.  I have information on all the Chamber members and a few other folks that I know myself, however if you have a business and would like it listed in the booklet... email me with the name and contact info. Also a brief note to tell me what kind of business it is (some are hard to tell from the name ;D)

Right now the plan is to give the booklets out to new area residents as they sign up for city utilities, and to new rural residents as we are made aware of them.  I'm hoping to have them printed in October sometime, depending on how long it takes to get the information gathered and put in booklet form.

Chamber members will get a free ad in the booklet, but all area businesses that send me contact info will be included in the directory.  Chamber membership is only $15 a year, so that might be something to consider as well.

I want to include non-profit service groups and clubs too, so please contact me with that info.

If you send me an email, PLEASE include the Name with address/phone/email/web address   as is available so I don't have to look it all up myself.  THANKS!
