(http://www.cascity.com/howard/animations/gnight.gif) my friend Flo....................

"When I was growing up during the Depression I lived with my red-headed brothers and sisters, my parents and grandparents at the foot of a mountain which had been in our family for generations. My father used to say that in our house there was always room for one more. And I remember one morning when his hospitality was put to a challenging test".

"Those were lean years, and for many Americans a harsh and bitter time. On Waltons Mountain we were sustained with poems and gingerbread and laughter and sharing, but most of all by a remarkable mother and father. The house in which we were born and raised is still there, still home, and on the winds that sigh along those misted blue ridged mountains our voices must echo still".

Ben: John Boy, you awake?
John-Boy: What'd you want, Ben?
Ben: Are you going to marry Marcia Woolery?
John-Boy: You want me to?
Ben: She makes good gingerbread.
John-Boy: Huh huh. Well, I'll think about it. Goodnight now.
Ben: Goodnight.

Goodnight everyone...Computer is going off..I'm gonna catch up on watching American Idol.. read a bit and then sink into my pillow..
Teresa

"Few strangers ever came to Waltons Mountain. We got our news of the outside world from the radio or from an occasional copy of a magazine. But I remember when I was about 17 four visitors arrived and gave me my first unexpected glimpse of the other world beyond our mountain".

"And so the carnival people left Waltons Mountain. The postcard we received from them said they'd arrived safely in Chicago and were working at the World's Fair. Some years later, when I left to go to college, the book which Tommy gave me was one of the possessions I took with me. Now, whenever I open it I remember those four people who gave a 17 year old boy his first glimpse of the outside world".

Elizabeth: John-Boy?
John-Boy: What is it?
Elizabeth: You think they'll ever come back?
John-Boy: I don't know, Elizabeth.
Elizabeth: I wish I could see that lady walk along the rope again.
John-Boy: One day maybe.
Elizabeth: Hope so, goodnight, John-Boy.
John-Boy: Goodnight, Elizabeth.

Have had a big weekend with Ashley staying with us since Saturday evening. We went to the MEG carnival and she had a big time. It was a success I would say. Then she stayed the night and was with me all day today. Gosh they grow up so fast, so I enjoy evey second with her.  Baked cinnamon rolls and cooked quite a bit..
Did lots and lots of yard work and planting stuff.. still lots to do.. Kjell cleaned out the garage, the shed, and mowed the grass, trimmed trees , and cleaned out the truck.

And I am more than ready to go to bed.. which is where I'm heading right now.

"Waltons Mountain was an everlasting presence in our lives. Whenever I could, when I was growing up there during the Depression years, I would climb its slopes. Up there I could get lost in dreams, dreams of becoming a writer, of becoming a man. I knew no writers so I had no writer to model myself after, but as a boy aspiring to manhood I had only to follow in the footsteps of a remarkable father".

"It was a fine thing to know such people, and to be one of them, and to share in their abundant love. It was a poor time, but in it we were richer than we knew. Forty years have passed, but the voices from that house are as fresh as yesterday".

Elizabeth: Mama.
Olivia: Yes Elizabeth.
Elizabeth: You asleep?
Olivia: Almost.
Elizabeth: You reckon Chance is asleep?
Olivia: Ha, wouldn't surprise me.
Elizabeth: Goodnight, Mama.
Olivia: Goodnight Elizabeth.

G'night everyone.. sweet dreams..

I had a busy day, but got all the bookwork and the bills paid for the hardware store... started on a video I have to make.. cooked supper.( lasagna and crusty Italian bread and garlic cole slaw... did 3 loads of clothes..cleaned the house up really good, did some stuff on Down Range, watched last night's  American Idol I had taped, watched Ghost Whisperer that was taped tonight... and did some research on health things so I could post on here ..which I did...( as I feel so guilty when I don't contribute more)
So I am very tired tonight.. .and ready for bed.
G'Night everyone. Sweet Dreams.. No Worries..

"A mountain has no need for people, but people do need mountains. We go to them for their beauty, for the exhilaration of standing closer to mysterious skies, for the feeling of triumph that comes from having labored to reach a summit, and I remember a day in the 1930s when I went to Waltons Mountain in search of manhood".

"I became not a hunter but a writer and I hope a source of some pride to my father. For to be a good hunter or a good writer one must know why he hunts or why he writes. And the "why-of-it-all" for me lies in that house and in the memory of voices that rise in the night and will sweetly haunt my life for ever".

Elizabeth: John-Boy.
John-Boy: What you want, Elizabeth?
Elizabeth: Are you asleep yet?
John-Boy: Not yet.
Elizabeth: What' you doing?
John-Boy: Thinking.
Elizabeth: I'm proud you killed the bear to save Daddy, John-Boy.
John-Boy: Me too.
Elizabeth: Goodnight John-Boy.
John-Boy: 'Night, honey.

The end of another wonderful day.  Started off with the telephone ringing and our Sherri called and we "chatted" for a long time -- and then I got busy fixing dinner as Fred's brother Russell was to be here around 10 AM  and he was.  Fred and Russ got in his truck and went for the $2.50 tour of Elk City State Park  they both just love to drive around and survey the world.  Before they returned and I was still cookin' and stirrin' Teresa called and we visited - the guys returned and I finished dinner.  We ate and loved every bite that we put in our mouths.  I sent all the left overs home with Russ and after he  left I cleaned up the kitchen, and washed the dishes  (sadly did not dry the dishes and put them away ) instead I came up here and clicked this addictive computer, and looked out the window and noticed a pretty silver pickup that was slowing down in the road -- and pulled into our drive.  AND  when I answered the door, I was sooooooooooooo pleasantly surprised ...  It was Myrna and Frank Winn !!!!  SURPRISE !!!
WOW  how nice was that???  Fred and I REALLY enjoyed them, and instantly I wished that I had finished cleaning up the kitchen,  but  you know ~~~~~~` too late for that.  We visited and had such a great time with them.
COME AGAIN -- ANYTIME  YOU ARE ALWAYS WELCOME.
After they left one of the park Rangers stopped by and ( he is my favorite) we were visiting and he said "Jo, how come you have on socks that have holes in them?"  Welllllllllllll  I knew that, but we don't wear shoes in the house -- and the darn things just have holes in them, that is as simple as that.  We laughed and he said, he bet our friends were impressed with my "new socks"   lol lol   So, Myrna and Frank  -- let me know you are coming next time and I will put on some "unholie" socks.
Time to call it a day -- it has been a great one.   ' Nite all!

Fine day here.  Grandson from KU came home last night so have been spending most of the time with him.  He will leave early in the morning to return to Lawrence for a parade in honor of the Jayhawk Champs.  It has been an awsome week for him.  Good to have him home for a couple of days.

Other grandson returned this evening from Tulsa where he played in a Lacrosse tournament.  They won 2 out of three games so he was pleased.  Last game was two overtimes and lost by one point.  He fell asleep on the way home and awoke as Coach pulled into Toot's.  They took a different route home so he thought he was dreaming when he woke in front of Toot's. He didn't bring me a shake olr malt - just his empty cup. It made a great ending for a great day for him.  Memories!

Youngest daughter found a house and put earnest money down with hopes her offer will be accepted.  Another daughter has Peligans in their lake so we enjoyed watching them float and fly.  Somewhere around 40 at one time were counted. This is unusual for in the city.   They also have an Eagle nesting in a tree close to the lake.

Jo, we enjoyed our visit, and I didn't even notice your socks!  Darn--miss out on that!  You know, I have a saying and it's certainly not an original one, but I tell people if you come to see me, come any time, if you come to see my house, let me know ahead.  I do often tell people to call before coming, but it is simply because I wouldn't want to miss them, especially if they are driving from a distance. We had that happen a time or two when we lived in West Texas and were sorry that we had missed people, especially when it was someone from "home".
Myrna

P. S. and the dishes that were draining certainly didn't hinder our visit---just made me feel at home, as I often let them drain and dry on their own.

Never ever fails.. clean your house up all nice and shiny..put on makeup.. do your hair.. and you never see a soul.
Take a day and say " to heck with it..I'm going to go w/o makeup.. tie my hair back.. let the house go to pot..
and people you haven't seen for years will show up!" ::)

Myrna and Frank..Glad you had a good visit with Daddy and  "old holey socks".   (http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/Giggles.gif)

What a nice way to start the morning -- well not START really, but just logged on the forum, and Frank and Myrna, it would have been wonderful if you could have stayed all day - any day for that matter - we REALLY enjoyed your visit.

I can't bear to dispose of my holie socks, -- they went in the laundry and then will go into the bag I keep for cleaning jobs.  Am I a tight wad ????  Welllllll yes, I guess I am.  I just have a hard time throwing away things that I can still get some use out of.
Born poor - raised poor   guess that sums it up pretty well.

Thanks again for stopping, and will look forward to the next visit.

Born poor -- raised poor.  That about sums it up all right, Jo.  Right now I have a bag of old towels, wash clothes, etc. waiting to be taken out to the garage where they might be used.  I also have a drawer full of the same thing that I go to for cleaning.  Sometimes I even throw it away after cleaning instead of washing and storing again.

I have two pair of holey socks that I wear all the time. They belonged to my dad; I feel close to him whenever I put them on. I will have to give them up one of these days, but for now the holes don't show, so I will continue to wear them. Good for you, Jo.  ;) ;)

I, too, have a hard time throwing things away.  Like you said, Jo, born poor, raised poor, and those traditions still stay with me.  I have things that many people would have gotten rid of, but I think I can use that one more time, or I can wear that one more time.

I've had a wonderful busy weekend.. We got so much accomplished.
I'm very tired, but it is a good tired.. The kind where you go to crawl in bed and the sheets and the pillow feel so good, that you just melt right down in them a fall immediately into  a deep sleep.

I love it!

"Waltons Mountain is as old as the earth itself. For countless centuries it has quietly shouldered the sky above the land on which our family settled, built and flourished. Through all its seasons, through all the great and small events of our lives the mountain was changeless, as fixed and as permanent as the glittering stars above. And then there was an evening in the 1930s which started all of us wondering how fixed or permanent anything is, - even a star".

"It was not every day that a star fell on Waltons Mountain, but nearly every day brought some small miracle - the beauty of the turning seasons, the wonder of growth, and the constant revelation of all that lies in the human heart. Over it all loomed the unfailing love of our mother and father, more constant than the stars in their courses".

Elizabeth: What holds the stars up in the sky?
Jim Bob: They're stuck up there on something.
Elizabeth: What makes them fall?
Jim Bob: Oh they burn out like electric light bulbs.
Elizabeth: How come you're so much smarter than me?
Jim Bob: I'm older.
Elizabeth: Goodnight, Jim Bob.
Jim Bob: Goodnight Elizabeth.

Can't believe nobody commented on:

QuoteJo, we enjoyed our visit, and I didn't even notice your socks!  Darn--miss out on that

The "Darn" was pretty good!  :D    :D   :D

What I really want to say, however, is that checking in on the forum at the end of the day, or anytime, is kind of like sitting down for a visit with an old and dear friend. I don't post much, but I read regularly. All you guys are friends, and it's very comforting to visit.

So . . . thank you, Teresa and Kjell, for sharing with us and allowing us to share with each other.
'tis good.

Well another day gone and it is about time for me to do a bit of work and then get to bed.
Watched Duet tonight and even though we saw Dave for a split second.. didn't get to hear him sing tonight. so guess he will probably be in the batch that is on the 2 hour show on Friday.
I will tape and watch every single show and keep my fingers crossed on how he does.

Anyway.. have a big day tomorrow.. massages in the morning and then I have to go to the chiropractor in the afternoon, plus I get to write a check to the IRS and pay them more money..and send in my taxes.  ( I'm soooo excited...... NOT)

I hope everyone rests well tonight..
G'night everyone ...

"I remember a day in hot summer back during the Depression when we all wished Waltons Mountain was a mile higher so its cool shade would reach us sooner. Growing up in those long-gone days I took for granted the discomfort of a hot summer, but as a novice writer I took it as my duty to question other things, like sin, and what made a sinner. Trouble was no one seemed to agree".

"The memory of those days is with me still. It makes me laugh sometimes to think how innocent a boy I was, sometimes cruel, and pompous, and sometimes loving and wise like my parents. And remembering those long-gone days I'm grateful they were mine".

Ben: John-Boy? D'you think I could be a preacher when I grow up?
John-Boy: You want to be?
Ben: That's what I need to ask you about.
John-Boy: Well what, Ben?
Ben: Is a preacher allowed to like liquorish whip as much as praying?
John-Boy: I wouldn't let that stop you, Ben. Goodnight, now.
Ben: Goodnight.

We are in the middle of a filming project and we're hoping the wind doens't blow us away. Been a big day and have another one in the morning.. so I will bid you all a good night and sweet dreams.

"There was beauty on Waltons Mountain at any time of the year, but looking back the time I treasure most is Spring, when the days were growing longer and the promise of Summer was ahead. They were the kind of days made for dreaming, but being the oldest of seven children during the Depression didn't leave much time for daydreams. But somehow we always made time.

Elizabeth: John-Boy.
John-Boy: Yes honey?
Elizabeth: Do flowers talk?
John-Boy: I don't know Elizabeth, why?
Elizabeth: I kissed a hollyhock today, I thought I heard something whisper. What do you think?

Elizabeth: Goodnight, John-Boy.

Teresa, You are NUTS!  I don't know how you keep running 80mph!  Ha!

Yesterday I mowed (and mowed, and mowed). ;)  Today I cut brush till I was too tired to cut anymore.  Our gray wild kitty, Lester, decided to keep me company and kept trying to catch the end of the loppers through the grass & leaves, so i had to be extra careful not to "trim his nails" on accident.  :-\  The yellow, Fifi, sat in the shade at a distance and supervised. 8)

Tonight Marty finished tilling our garden and ran the harrow over it.  Tomorrow I'll see what I can get planted and try to get most of it done... If I can wiggle tomorrow after the stiff muscles settle in from today. ;)  And if it doesn't rain so much I have to wear a life jacket out there.

The stuff we've already planted is doing really great and I'm excited to get more of it done.  A "friend" gave Marty a big bag of okra seed...  :P.
That's okay, I love to grow egg plant because it is pretty, but never eat it either... ???

Joanna; you can donate your orkra and eggplants to a good cause... ME!  I love 'em both!  I'm mostly planting tomatoes and cucumbers this year; got tired of making garden boxes and hauling dirt.  I'll add more next year, maybe, and keep expanding the veggie line.

Diane, you are really close to where my daughter lives, in the area of Staunton, IL.

I'm glad you made it through the storms O.K.  I guess this Spring is like no other has ever been, at least, not for a long time.  When we were there about ten days ago, the fields were full of water, and the farmers were unable to get their corn planted.

We've been seeing the results of the rains at the Wisconsin Dells, houses falling into the river, what a tragedy!  And, other areas, too.

I'm glad you're moving along O.K., in spite of the "detours."  Just think, tomorrow, you'll be in Kansas, and be meeting some really nice people.  Enjoy!

Here I am checking in again. What a wonderful day we had. We paid our respects to my family at Howard's cemetery, and stopped by Cookson's and met "the boys", then met  Kjeill, Teresa and her lovely family. Jo and Fred are totally delightful, as I knew they would be. and Teresa, well you would have thought we had just seen each other yesterday. What fun..afterward we had a tasty chicken burrito at Poplar Pizza and got to see the museum, as it was opened for us to visit. We took a leisurely drive out Limestone Road and found the old family place and wandered 'way up on top of the hill to look out over Howard and Elk County. I thought the wind might blow me all the way to Topeka! A fudge monkey at Toots cooled us off and then it was time for a rest back at Crooked Creek Lodge. Getting to meet Liz and Lisa at the Swinging Bridge Cafe finished my beautiful day.
Hi, D L and thank you for the welcome. I'm so glad we came out. Tomorrow is Caney (I found out my cell phone doesn't work here!) Friday we'll have lunch around noon at the cafe at Longton and then back here at Crooked Creek in Moline for dinner and visiting in the lounge. If any of you are around, we'd love to see you. Saturday we leave for Lawrence and points north.

What a wonderful visit we had with Diane and Al. (who is very handsome  ;) )
Diane is absolutely the most easy going down to earth person with an energy that
is one who you are immediately comfortable with. It felt like she and I had been old friends forever.  :)
Bless her heart.. She was so hot. She hadn't got used to the Kansas heat..and I had turned off my a/c cause I didn't think it was that hot this morning. So that didn't help her sweating problem any.. But we had such a fun visit. And Mama and Daddy just happened to here for the morning..so that was so nice too.

Diane.. I had everyone try the Potato chips with the Old Bay seasoning on them. They would take some getting used to..as they have a distinct flavor.. But I finished the bag this evening. Thanks so much for the seasoning and the chips and of course my shell. ( She now knows how that shell fits right in with all my "bones" in my house. LOL )

I had Mason tonight as Derek had fire meeting and Rochelle had Eastern Star. He is soooo smart and so funny. What a joy my 2 little shining stars are.  :)

Guess we are going to leave later than we thought for New Mexico.. We finally got some decisions from the upper management.. so I'll be packing all day tomorrow..
Good Night ..Sleep Tight ... No Worries....

Ohhhhh What a wonderful day yesterday was !!!  It was sort of a last minute decision to go to Howard, Fred called Derek and asked him to look at his lawnmower, knowing full well, that it would be "fixed" when he got through with it -- so off to Howard we went.  While Teresa and I were up town  - to the bank - post office - city office and then back to Cookson's only to learn that Diane and Al had been there and as she said she would, gave money for the fireworks display.  When Mark told us that, I was soooo disappointed, as I just knew I wouldn't get to meet these delightful people, but as we drove around the corner to Kjell and Teresa's home, THERE THEY WERE standing on the front porch talking to Kjell.  They are just as friendly as can be and as I was standing looking at Diane's profile, I told her how much she looked like her Grandmother Dessie Amberg.  Well, as you can guess, I was very happy that I was was able to meet these two, and anyone that will be lucky enough to do so, will be just as glad as Teresa, Kjell, Fred and I are.
We wish for them a safe and happy journey, as they work their way back home.
Happy Trails, Diane and Al !!

Diane; which direction did you go on Limestone?  How far out did you go?  We live West of Howard on Limestone, about 7 miles.  Right before Limestone ends and the big hills begin.  Did you drive by our house?  Too bad you didn't stop!

I, too, got a Diane and Al fix.

And it was wonderful.  From the moment Diane walked through our front door, we instantly connected and started visiting. What a lovely pair of friends.

Plus, she always makes me feel good about rural Kansas.  As much as I like it, I sometimes find myself apologizing for it because we don't have many of the niceties found in larger places.  You all know what I mean.

Then along comes Diane and she gives me a list a mile long of all the things she has found here, all the nice folks she has met, and all the good food she has eaten.

So I repent.

And I'm glad Diane and Al came to our town today.

Steph said that you went out to the ranch and things look about the same.  Hope you wrote your names in the garage again.  When you are up on "top of the hill" and look behind you instead of towards town, way off in the distance  you can see a wind farm!  It was in the process of being built in when we were out there in 06.  When you are in the cemetery see if the pennies are still on the graves.  If you go to Horton, look there too.  Just don't go there at night.
Glad you are having fun visits with your new Howard friends!  Enjoy your trip down memory lane and all the other neat places too.
Watch out for Tornadoes!   :o

I'm back once again. We had breakfast for dinner and those pancakes were good! Tobina, to find what's left of our old home place, you have to go out Limestone road, west about 10 miles. The house is derelict, but the barn and other out buildings are in good shape. Mr. Perkins bought it in 2001 after Mom died and Daddy decided to sell everything off. It sits on the north side along where road 7 crosses. It was a huge spread at one time long ago, but was sold off bit by bit. If you turn left there, you go over a low water crossing and go all the way up on the top...there is a pumping jack up there, an old machinery shed and the most beautiful view out across the area.  I'm not sure which house is yours. The place with the big columns at the curve? or another one? Are you around tomorrow? We could come out in the afternoon, if I can figure out your place. We're going to have lunch at Longton at noon tomorrow and be back here for dinner tomorrow night.

Didn't have to find you.  Been coming here for several years.  (Someone else sent me here)  I just have never had anything I wanted to say but have enjoyed reading what everyone writes.
Remember Zimmermans fire?  I told you you could come here to read about it.  I am happy that you have made so many wonderful friends and have gotten to meet many of them!    :)
Thank you for the information on the pennies and also thank you for putting the roses on the graves.  Have a fun time.

Diane, the big house with the columns is Jim Perkins, I think.  I am not sure if Tobina is east or west of there, but I think it is west.  You said 10 miles west and across a low water bridge.  If my memory serves me right, if you turn north at the corner, you go past the oil field that my son-in-law works.  Haven't been out that way for probably 5 years or more.

"We're going to have lunch at Longton at noon tomorrow "

If your trip would've been a couple of weeks ago, we could of had lunch with you tomorrow, at the Longton Cafe!  Other than Judy, do you know anyone there?  I hope Judy comes up to see you, I'm SURE she will!

Enjoy the area, and the good people of the area!

There were storm warnings the two weeks we were back there, also, and luckily, we had no bad storms, unless you can call a good old thunderstorm with lots of rain (and "not so good" lightening) a "bad storm."  Have you heard any of the rolling thunder?

Enjoy, and stay safe.

Wilma, now that you mention it, I think that is the Perkins house. I had forgotten. Thanks! I must have passed Tobina's house, but I don't know which one. Frankly, if you go north past the old place, other than riding a horse up that way years ago, I don't know what's out that way. I'll have to go take a look. Bonnie, I wish I could have met you at Longton too. No, I don't know anyone else but Judy there, but the way things are going we will by the time lunch is through.    No rolling thunder yet, but I have heard it before.
Roma Jean, I'd love to see you too, but we aren't going home the same way we came. We are planning to go on north, but I'm not sure we can go up through Iowa to get to South Dakota. We may have to go up to Wyoming and then go east.

Diane, if you want to drop in to the Mini-Mart along the Highway in Longton, say "Hi" to Teresa Kirkpatrick.  She is one of the nicest people in the world!  Tell her I said "Hello!"  There's usually a lot of friendly "cowboys" standing around, too.  Good people!

Diane, just take I-135 north from Wichita, into Nebraska, then on north to South Dakota.  Maybe I-135 doesn't go all the way into Nebraska.  It has been a long time since we went that way.

I think I'll have an early night, if I can sleep with the engine noise from the Mud Run at the fair grounds.  It's not so bad, if I turn the fan on high I can barely hear them. I just keep thinking of all the money people must spend on their vehicles if they run them like that on a regular basis.  Never did understand doing that kind of thing for fun when farmers & ranchers all over have to do it daily to check things in the field.  I never enjoyed going through the deep mud when I went along for chores, even though I never had to drive.  We're planning to get cattle again now that Marty can be here to feed & such, but I'll save all the mud runnin' stuff for him!

Marty was ill yesterday with the flu, and still not 100% today, but he did get our porch posts up and leveled.  It was quite a chore, but a big relief now that it's done.  He'll start building new railings next and I can't wait to see how the place will look when it's done.  We've got some nice bunting to decorate our porch for Independence Day, so our next goal is to have things looking good by July 4th (Marty's 50th birthday too!)  We missed Flag Day today, but you can only do what you can do.

I got the carpets all shampooed and the refrigerator scrubbed inside & out.  Love those little Mr. Clean Magic Eraser sponges for that chore!  You can clean stuff with plain water as well as with some caustic chemical!  Now I'll give the dog a bath and be done for the day. I hope you all have a great Father's Day tomorrow.

Diane,

Glad your trip is going well. I have sure enjoyed riding? along with you.

My daughter, Robyn lives in Wisconsin and she has picked up the accent of the area.
The heritage up there is more Swedish and German and then you have the different accents of
those areas and it is fun listening to all the tallk.

It is funny how we do pick up the dialect of a region the longer we live there.
My oldest lived in North Carolina and when he married Jenny, she was southern and it didn't take him long to
pick up the accent.

Hope you can avoid the storms the rest of your trip.
We had another storm go through this morning, at least an inch.........and IT IS STILL COMING.

Not wishing it gone, but a few days of drying out would be oh, so nice.

God bless and keep you and Al

Diane, I'm glad you're moving along safely.  When we accompanied the Elk County Extension group to Mt. Rushmore a few years ago, we went to the places you have mentioned.  I bought a cook book and a poster at the Wall Drug Store, that was an amazing place!  The ice cream was good there, also.   Are you noticing any fewer cars on the Highways?  We're going to be driving to Branson the first week in July, and we received an e-mail from the Branson Chamber of Commerce saying that:  "the Branson Chamber of Commerce is currently issuing Gas Buster Discount Cards to help alleviate the burden of the rising gas prices. Simply save your gas receipts from your drive to Branson. So long as the gas receipts combine for a total of $50 or more, you will be able to go to either of the area's Chamber of Commerce & CVB Welcome Centers and receive a $50 Gas Buster Discount Card. As the name implies, the card will feature $50 dollars in savings for area attractions, dining, retail and more!"  So, that is an incentive for people to drive to Branson for their vacations.

Have fun out there!

Back to the room and it is a blessing that we have air conditioning .  ;D

Here in Albuquerque it is HOT & DRY and Windy... ..and did I say HOT? ....(http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/heat-2.gif)104 degrees..

We have been told that summers are hot and dry, winters are cold and windy. Vegetation is desert scrub, semi-arid grasslands, and some pinyon-juniper woodlands on the mesa tops.

To think that tribes of people ( Anasazi's  ) used to literally survive out in the middle of all of this (and knew that there was nothing else in the world) is amazing.
Tough species back then.

We have had a few days before the real work begins, so we have taken the opportunity to delve into the history and lifestyles of the prehistory peoples of the area. The museums and local places to visit along with the vast country to explore has been a wonderful experience. Things like this fascinates us. We love it.
Tomorrow we are going to what is called "Old Town"..so there is loads of history there too..

Then Wednesday.. it is WORK WORK WORK until Sunday night.
We will be filming for the TV show Cowboys..and also for Down Range. This is on a 15,000 acre piece of property and there is LOTS going on.. Lots of music, shootin' and fun..( so can't complain too much about a job like that)  :)

http://sassnet.com/EoT/home.php

Then Saturday is the gala event ( another one of those 1800's balls.) .so I get to wear my new dress and hat that Carol Nigh made me. It is awesome I have to say...and even though it is going to be hot, I'll still put on those elbow length gloves ..that corset and 4 petticoats  dress hat ..etc... and sweat and smile..  ;D

Goodnight all.......... :)

the first time I went to California to visit my mother, in 1956, the highway ( I think it was Route 66) went through "old town" - --was I ever disappointed when I next went through there, in the mid 80's, and one of those durn "by-passes" went all the way around.  Time saver for drivers, but I missed the "local culture" and sights.  I'd much rather go through those towns than around them, but then I don't travel to get from point A to point B the fastest way possible. Enjoy your visit and fill us all in when you get back.

Diane, I hope you enjoy the Badlands your first time through, as much as I did, back in 1952.  I was 3 months pregnant with Teresa, and it was not as commerical as it is now.  We had no air conditioning in the car, and it was in August, so~needless to say it was hottern' the hubs of Hades..we went across and up through Deadwood - then the Needles highway and headed n/east to Minnesota.  When we had read the signs for miles and miles "Don't miss Wall Drug Store" we were more than ready for some ice water and that good good ice cream.  It is truly a great trip and I am so glad you and Al are still having fun.
Keep us posted!!!

I had my own little excursion yesterday. I finally persuaded Ted to drive the 1 1/4 miles off the main highway and let me visit Arnolds' Greenhouse. It is just off of 75 highway almost to Burlington in Coffee county. Wow! Was I impressed! I didn't even make a dent in seeing all the flowering plants before I started to feel guilty about hubby sitting in the hot van waiting for me. I did buy a couple of flowering tropical vines to experiment with. I think the Elk county bus took a trip to Arnolds' this past spring, hope they go again and can attatch a trailer as I plan to go with them this time!  ;D

It is very late  here.. but we just got back to the room and while Marshal. ( opps... I mean Kjell) is getting tomorrows producing agenda down with the crew.. I am laying out the clothes we have to wear.
We have had a nice relaxing couple of days .. but now everyone is here and the work begins. We were at the range all afternoon and it is so hot and windy and dirty. I mean to tell you all that the dirt here is like flour. It is THAT fine and it blows in and on everything.
So we expect to be dirty and sweaty all day tomorrow. I was in street clothes ( Capri's and a t-shirt) today bit there were lots of women  at the range that was already in their finery. Hats and bustles and parasols and they were beautiful. (and hot) LOL
Since we were not in full work force and just there talking to old friends and scoping out the place..I had time to shop..
What fun. I met up with a gal that is a "partner in crime " every time we get together..and she and I ran around to some of the vender's tents and did we ever find some pretty things.  ;)
Among many things...I bought me some "hair".. Yes you heard me right. A couple weeks ago I had Mark cut off about 7" off my hair. So now I have short hair and back in "the day" women who had short hair were considered " soiled doves ".
Well, The Marshal's wife couldn't be a soiled dove, so I had to have some long curly hair.
Kate is well known in the Cowboy clothing of the 1800's world as having the best wigs and hairpieces around. They feel just like real hair and the colors match perfectly to your own color.. soooooo I got me some "hair".. lol lol

Then I found the perfect white beaded evening bag.. and a a pink skirt with black lace ruffles..and a white skirt with eyelet  lace and red bloomers to wear underneath ( of course).
I tried on a full 4 piece outfit with a "to die for" corset , (to be worn on the outside).. that I just loved and fit me to a tee.. but  even though everyone told me that $175.00 was cheap for it.. it was still a bit too much for me to let go of. (Carol Nigh has spoiled me rotten on sewing for me  :) )  So I didn't buy it.

So we came back.. had dinner with friends and sat outside on the veranda and had drinks and laughed and talked until now. What a nice way to end the day.

G'night everyone.

Diane, I knew an elderly lady years ago whose mother had taken in Calamity Janes' illegitimate child; a little girl. She cared for the girl off and on during her growing up years. Mildred (my friend), was very well educated and participated in the womens studies that were done in the 1970s. There is a recording she wrote about Calamity Jane somewhere in the Wichita State University archives. It is very sad, and the recording was done excellently and quite haunting. Jane gave birth to this child of WB Hickock in a cave all alone. Not very glamorous.

Did your car have any damage from the hail?

There is a "History Museum" at Deadwood, on the North edge, unless I was square turned around.  It is really worth while to go through it, if you have the time.  Are there a lot of motorcycles in Deadwood now?  There were lots of them when we were there a couple of years ago, and it wasn't at the same time that they all go to Sturges.  (May be spelled wrong!)

Those red things Flo are "Bloomers".. Then there was the petticoat under the white skirt over the bloomers.
whew... LOL

They wore over the bosum corsets on the outside of the camisoles ...
And under the bosum( for lots of cleavage) under the clothing.

We had an outstanding day today. Got all the filming done for Cowboys.. and tomorrow we do the filming for Down Range.

I have never in all of my life been in a dust storm like they had today.  :o
The wind was HORRIBLE today. Like real hard Kansas wind, but there isn't any grass to blow off of it. It is just tons of  powder fine dirt.
The clouds started becoming dark.. the temp. dropped about 15 degrees and the wind blew nonstop all day. About 3:00, we all looked toward the north and it looked like a huge wall of a tornado forming from the sky to the ground.
Someone hollered for everyone to HURRY!!!! and grab whatever you could and help get the vendors goods inside their tents and on the ground if their were breakable items.
People who knew and lived locally  hollered out that we had about 1 1/2 minutes!
I had no idea what was going on.. but I helped a lady put her hurricane lamps and cowboy pottery on the floor of her open tent.
And people were grabbing clothes and books and everything to help these vendors out..
And I kid you not, I looked up and across the "town"  and it looked like a solid wall of dark brown *can't see anything* wall heading our way. I stepped inside an open flapped tent and that dust storm hit and you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. And you couldn't breathe either. The inside of the open tent was nothing but dirt. I had to take a breath so I grabbed my camera bag and thought that I had to get out of there. I kept my hand over my face and stepped outside the tent and I couldn't hardly stand upright. The dirt was so strong and so powerful that it felt like bees stinging me all over and my glasses were instantly covered. I was coughing ( along with everyone else) and keeping my back to it, I side stepped back inside the tent.

Then it stopped. The wind blew back to normal and the dirt tornado was gone and EVERYTHING was literally covered with dirt.
Peoples faces, clothes, hair, books ..you name it..it had dirt on it.

By the time we left ( about 1 hr later) we were filthy. My teeth and lips were just gritty.
Never have I seen anything like it...

Will post a  few pics tomorrow night of us that were taken today. I'm just too tired right now to get them ready for the website.

G'Night Kansas...
(I'm ready to come home) :'(

Just a taste of Kansas during the dust bowl days.  The approaching storm did look like a huge wall of dirt and there wasn't much time to get the windows closed, the clothes off the line, the kids inside, the chickens had to take their chances.  Yes, Teresa, you have experienced a real dust storm.

We've had those in West Texas!!!!  Sometimes, they would last all day or last all night.  It does look like a wall coming in.  One time Frank was in Levelland, TX and had to go to Hobbs, NM.  Had to follow snow plows to clear the roads and also had to change the air filter before he could get there.  I was in Midland with the kids that particular storm.  Went into a meeting about 5:30 P.M. nothing was going on (we were south of Lubbock and Levelland), but 6 P.M. the dirt was so bad that you couldn't see a quarter of a block.  It actually blocked the streets with in areas of town with tumbleweeds.  The dirt is so fine it can find it's way into your house not matter how tight it is.  Yes, and your face feels like sleet hitting it.  Teresa, I am sorry you had to experience it.  I used to say I would rather have sleet than the dirt aned sand hit me in the face.  the one storm I just told you about was only one of many.  They used to tell us some terrible stories about the earlier days when people hung laundry on the lines and people lived in the oil camps.

I was wondering where you were on your trip.
Yes, we want to hear from you.
This will be the only trip I get to take this summer....(unless I go back to Topeka with family)
but, that would almost be a freebie......No motel or any extra unless I want to.

I don't know about the area east of the Mississippi......but I think that Iowa and Wisconsin are a couple of the
prettiest states I have been in.

I just love the rolling hills and when I went to my daughter  a few years ago......I just enjoyed my trip so much
Did you get to stop at the Amana Colonies in Iowa? I could only stay over night, but did stop early enough to walk through
the motel site. Really beautiful.

Bet you and Al are ready to be home in your own beds..I always love to leave..........but there comes a time when my bed and space just calls to me and I have to go home.

Glad your trip is going well.........Night to you and stay safe.
God bless

They had a dust storm like that in NW Kansas about 4 years ago.  It killed a KS Senator (or someone in govt) around Colby on Interstate.  His car was hit by a semi that couldn't see him.

Glad you made it home safely, Diane and Al!

Diane,

Glad you and Al made it safely through the flooded midwest.  Your visit to this area gave us a needed lift.  Sometimes we don't know what we have here until someone like you comes along to remind us.

You brightened a day for a lot of us, Diane.  So glad you made it safely home to your own "little beddie-bye-bye"
We are having more rain here this morning - and the lightening jerked me awake - it was louder than the thunder about 3 o'clock this morning.
Nice to follow your trip with you and Al -- have a good summer.

Glad you made it home ok.
Your trip sure sounded like you enjoyed it.

I know I enjoyed riding along!...........I didn't have to decide
what to pack or unpack.........I didn't have to figure out where to go or what to do....
and I didn't have to deal with traffic and then deal with a strange bed each night.

I do hope you can come back someday. You would be more than welcome.
Thanks for taking time to say "Howdy" to me and Longton.

I will remember you.
God bless you and Al

It is only 11:35, but I think I am going to try to shut down here and call it a night. I say that and maybe by 1:00 I will be in bed.
Being a night owl isn't always the easiest lifestyle to try to overcome.
I just got back from eating at Flint Oak. It was really good. Had a rib eye steak , garlic mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables and cottage cheese. Topped it off with a cup of hot tea with real cream. Yum..
Drove home real slow with the windows down. The night is so pretty and quiet. No wind..no rain..just lots of night sounds.
To me the symphony of summer night sounds of Kansas is better than a full concert at Carnegie Hall.

Tomorrow I'm going out to our lake (the farm) and do some shootin'. Kjell had one of the top leather makers for gun rigs make me my cross draw holster to go with my gun rig, so I am set to start practicing cowboy shooting.
I have to as I am going to be put in an episode of Cowboys as a shooter this next month. I am also going to start competing in shoots, so I better get my trigger finger in shape.. lol lol

I hope everyone has a safe and blessed Sunday tomorrow in whatever way you want.
Thanks again for being "friends"..

Flo.. I ended up with a headache so I stayed up and played my computer games until 4 this morning.. drinking green tea laced with feverfew.
Finally..I gave up and took a pain pill and muscle relaxer and it just conked me out.

But I slept good after that.  But wasn't that nite nite soothing?
I don't dare listen it now..  LOL

My family went to Flint Oak for supper tonight and then
Sam & Becky and Mark and I came back and we played Pinochle until after 1.

Becky and I only won 2 stinkin' games.  >:(

But we all drank my special coffee and had a wonderful time while the guys won and gloated and we lost and whined. LOL

Kjell is going to shoot competitively tomorrow, so he is already snoring..dreaming about hitting all the targets.  ;)

Good night and I'm headin' to bed.

LOL  Just a Bunn Coffee Maker Flo..
But I have a recipe that I use that everyone loves.

Fresh ground hazelnut coffee beans.
(Make the coffee)..
Add to a cup,  3 Tbls  vanilla or hazelnut cappuccino mix
4Tbls heavy whipping cream (out of a carton)
stir and mix until mix is thick and dissolved
pour coffee in cup.
Top with lots of whipped cream that you buy in a can.
take spoon and push sprayed whip cream down into the coffee a few times.

No calories at all in this cup of joe..  ::)

Take that coffee ..add to it  4 lifetime good friends.. pinochle cards and you have a perfect evening.  :)

back from my reunion.  Teresa, that really sounds good.  Pushing the whipped cream down into the coffee probably drowns what little calories there are, right?.  Sounds much much better than the coffee out of the machine I sent you.  ;D

Night all!  It's been a trying day.  Marty got some mowing done, then he & a friend brought me some more mulch for the garden, and then he finished making tomato cages, so that kept me busy.  Our squash has been attacked by squash bugs.  NASTY little buggars.  I got them all sprinkled with Sevin dust, but have been told that if they already bit the plant, it probably won't survive.  Guess I'll have to wait & see.

I asked our son to move his car so we could mow; and it wouldn't start.  He opened the hood and BAM!  A packrat nest!  The car had been setting there less than a day, and it was on the street reasonably far away from anyplace you'd expect rats!  Squirt was trying to climb in the engine compartment to help look for the nasty vandal, but Clay was in no mood to enjoy the humor of that; so I had to lock her in the house for a while.  He patched the wire to the starter back together and will take it by the shop tomorrow after work and have it checked over.  Probably buy some rat poison too ;).

Good night everyone. I have about politic'd myself out tonight. Now I'm depressed.. LOL

I had Mason all day today and I will have Ashley all day Monday. ( Have to make time for the sunshine you know... )
Tomorrow we have to both go to the Chiropractor and get 'fixed" and then on into the city.. (yuck) but on the up side..it is nice to get away from the computers for awhile. So I believe I will go in and exercise on the equipment we have set up (Treadmill, Elliptical , and bicycle) and pop myself some popcorn ( as a reward  ;D ) .. call a couple girlfriends that have wanted to talk for the past week..and maybe read my book "People of the Mist" for awhile. Sounds like a winner to me.. ;)

Everyone sleep well...and have good dreams.

** SDMom.. I so hope you get over the shingles. I think about you several times a day..wishing my massages would magically take them away..(cause I would come to your house and give you one, if they would)  but you couldn't stand for anything to even touch you with those horrible blisters.. so I will just say a little extra prayer for you so that the angels help keep you as comfortable as possible.

Good night everyone..
I went to bed last night at 2:45 a.m. and had to get up this morning at 5:00 am and begin Neodesha by 6:30.
Lordy but I was tired when that alarm went off.

But we made it and I got to shoot in my first competitive Cowboy Action Shoot today. It is a small club.. Just right for starting out. And getting me over my shooting in front of people jitters.
It was very hot and no shade.. but it didn't seem to bother anyone much. Everyone was in good spirits and we all met and had breakfast and then headed out to the range ( which is a pasture that is set up with false fronts  of 3 buildings.. You shoot out or by all 3 in each stage and do different things in different orders..

Marshal ( Kjell) said I really did good for my first shoot. My speed was good.. My form was good.. ( I needed to stay focused a little better )  We shot 6 stages.. and I would have done real good but I had a stupid miss on every stage..  >:(
How you can miss targets that big and that close is beyond me.. but it's done by everyone ..
So at least I am over my nervousness about missing in front of anyone. LOL
I tried to shoot faster than I was capable of right now and that is when I messed up.

But it is so much fun, I didn't even really care. I was there to learn, get some shootin' in and get over my nervousness. ... as we have to shoot in a BIG match in October in California.. and I have to be all sassied up for that one.  :D :D

Here is a few pictures.

Have to be on location for the next few days.. and have to be gone from here early again in the morning, so best get to bed. Good night everyone. ...

We will wrap it up tomorrow ( actually today ...as it is now almost 1A.M.  :-\)
and then on to the last destination for Fridays work.

Tried catching up a bit on all the threads. You all have been very very busy..  :)

You know.. Kjell said that Elk County is coming together more and more.. and THAT was the original reason he built the Elk County Website and Forum. The topics and the responses are great.

I would like to join in for a bit tonight, but to be honest I am having trouble keeping my eyes open.. so I better try to get some rest. It is going to be another early day coming before I am ready.

I have to share with you all what a wonderful day we had yesterday.
Kjell and I got up bright and early and left to go pick up my Daddy and Mama.
The 4 of us took off for the day to the Down River casino right outside Baxter Springs.
What fun we had. My daddy isn't a lover of casinos, so as soon as we hit the door I linked my arm in his and told him he was going to be with me for awhile.
We sat down at some slot machines and I explained how they work ..* That you have to play ALL the lines and then you bet accordingly how much you want to pay per line. ..as with me I start out a penny a line so it cost me about 20-25 cents a pull*.
We put some money in and he right off the bat hit the bonus. I was so excited for hm and so we played that and then he wanted to try a machine that" rolled around and had lots of different bells and whistles on it" so he meandered off to so some individual playing. LOL
Mama and Kjell had separated and  was some place.. so we would occasionally cross paths and compare winnings. So far we were all ahead of the game by a little bit..
Everytime Daddy came up behind me and I was playing a machine I would start winning some nice amounts.. So I called him my good luck charm. (But I couldn't convince him to set on my lap the whole time I played.. hahaha

At 5:00, they have the most awesome seafood buffet.
They had other food too that was wonderful.
Let me see if I can tell you all that was on it. They had:
Crablegs, Steamed jumbo shrimp, big fried frog legs, fried shrimp, fried catfish, 4 different kinds of steamed baked fish
( shark,  halibut, tilapia, swordfish) *all in different sauces. Chicken wings, Boston Butt steaks with ball mushrooms. Pork ribs, prime rib roast, turkey ( both of which they were carving for you )  Garlic mashed potatoes.. steamed and seasoned baby carrots, beans, Chinese foods.. a huge salad, fruit and dessert bar.
There might be more, but I can't remember. It was absolutely delicious!
We ate and then gambled some more and then drove home. It was so fun and I loved being with my parents. We laughed and visited and laughed some more.
What a wonderful day it was..and how blessed I am to have my parents close to me.

I have decide I need to start concentrating on some of the things I enjoy doing, instead of posting so much in the politics board. I get way to emotional and agitated..and it is effecting my health.
I have to deal with all of that enough in my "real work hours". I don't need it to give me headaches and stress with the few precious hours I have for my down time. It is just not worth the ulcer and body breakdown it is giving me.

We have to go to Tulsa a few days this next week to do some filming on the USPSA championship there, plus several other projects that are in the making..so I'll try to just visit with all of you on a personal level .. and not on a political level for awhile.

I am going to probably call it an early night away from the computer. With the rain and the cool weather.. I think I will go in and grab a fuzzy blanket .. get my PJ's and robe  on early and maybe watch a movie. Something we haven't done in a long while.
Open that window ..get some fresh night air in grab another blanket for your bed and sleep well my forum friends...  :)

:) A beautiful day in the Ozarks.  Went to church, visited with friends and bicycled down to the park tonight to the Japenese Festival in our Japanese Walking Garden.  It is one of my favorite things to do.  They have it in September and April.  As the sun goes down they light all the torches and candles everywhere in the gardens.  There are fires burning in what looks like big woks that float on the waters of the pond.  One more call to my stepsister in Wichita and I am off to bed.  Good night Elk Co.

A good night to all.  I had another crazy day here.  I'd picked a lot of beans yesterday and Marty helped me snap them all last night; so first thing this morning I went out to find my pressure canner where I absolutely knew it was stored.  Now, I haven't really canned anything since... oh, maybe 1992 or so.  After helping me search to no avail, my brother-in-law told me he really thought he'd seen it in town.  He's not about to tell me I'm wrong, mind you; these Hunter boys all learn quick and they know better... ;) but he was right and the thing was in town the whole time... :-\

I got the canner out and got the cobwebs & dust cleaned off, then opened a box of jars.  Naturally, though I vividly remember washing them all before I carefully packed them away years ago, they were dirty... beyond dirty.  But I'm not going back out to the storage, so I scrubbed twice and washed them up.  By this time my morning is gone, though I had run up to Cooksons to order a new thermostat for my oven and get some more lids. I also spent a tiny bit of time playing on the internet...

In the afternoon I took a break to eat the BEST cinnamon roll ever; and another run uptown to Family Market for potatoes and more lids...  eventually I got the beans canned by 7:30 and supper is done.  23 quarts & 4 pints; I lost half the water on a couple of them, but we ate one for supper and I've got the other marked to use first.  Should have taken me about 4 hours and it took the entire day.  Oh well, I wasn't on a timeclock so guess it's fine.  Tomorrow I may even run up to my folks and pick their grapes to make jelly... That would keep me busy for another couple days at least  :D

I didn't get the mowing done, but I guess the grass isn't complaining.  I hope you all sleep as well as I plan to.  Nighty-Nite!

Boy, I am tired.

Been a long day and besides the rain making my arthritis and fibromyalgia kick up their heels.........I had an appointment at a lawyers office in Neodesha to discuss me taking medical bankruptcy.

I am going ahead with it. I just need a little more in the shape of paying the lawyer and courts and then it will happen.

I had written a very good post and hit the wrong button then and lost my first message.

I think God had a hand in it as he didn't want me to say what I had said in it.
Not really bad, but maybe a little rough worded for the people who just look in here.
My friends would have understood what I meant, but that is ok.

See, I can watch my mouth/hands when I have too. May hurt just a little...LOL...but, I can deal with it.

I am going to spend the rest of the day eating a bite of supper and then spending my time on the couch and just resting.

I also came home with a cold.........no I don't feel bad, just tired and altho I thought the runny nose was due to my allergies, I think I have a slight sore throat.........

Just wanted to say good night..........didn't get to visit much on the forum today maybe I can make up for it tomorrow.

God bless you all for being here..........family too far away to help me and I  do feel swamped with worry.
The only thing keeping me going is His promise a better day is coming.

Hugs...............Judy

Bin Laden and crew were unsuccessful at destroying the World Trade Center towers in 1994, although they did a lot of damage.

Seven years later, they took both towers down.

Tomorrow makes seven years after the twin towers fell.

Hopefully, there is no connection of any kind here.

Waldo, thanks for bringing up the earlier (1994) Twin Towers bombing. I don't find many people know of (or forget) that incident. In the Middle East symbolism is a part of how and when they do things. An event on this September 11 would be in line with how they choose to send a message. Also, the fact that nothing has happened since 9/11/2001 doesn't necessarily mean we have stopped terrorism. In the Middle East they often plan and wait for very long times to strike ( 10, 20, 100 years). We tend to think on a much smaller time scale.

I will be doing my regular Special Event Flag raising tomorrow at the local Water District Office next to my home. They have a big flag right next to the freeway. My home flag flies every day when I am home.

Judy I read your inspirational posts and never reply. I just had to post on this. Thank you for the inspiration that you give us every day. Our thoughts are with you and may the inspiration that you have given us come to you tenfold.

I tried to give you the story with a copy and paste......but, I can't figure it out.
So I have given you the address of this site and if you do nothing else.........go to it and read the
story of the Jesus Tree...........it will make you  feel so good and show you
what we all need to be doing.

I am only me, and most of the time I don't follow what I tell others.......sort of like practice what you preach, but like I said,
I am just me and do fall down.......A LOT. So
if I can only show someone the way as it was shown to me.....than I will be blessed and so will you.

Let me know what you think of this..........I am never sure if what I do here is doing any one any good or not.....just know that
for me it is a way of sharing my faith that I would never be able to show in person.
I am very shy and altho my foot is in my mouth a lot...........I stand back and observe and then WISH I had joined in.
Be well and know that someone does Love you........and me...

HE IS RISEN!.

David,

I am still foggy brained this morning and as I read the added post you put in I thought, boy, does that sound like me.........LOL.
than I actually reread it and then your text...........LOL.

I forgot that I had put that in here.

Don't you know that I am being led by the Lord to do this.............If I stumble it is my  fault.........but when some one can get the point of what I post and return the good  message to others we all benefit.

I know that if and when all of you meet me, you will be very surprised how lacking I am in self-confindence.....and am so happy and grateful to be able to share me with you all like this.

Thanks for the lovely feelings you and others have shared with me.............(I also like all the teasing that goes on here on the forum..........one of the hardest things to get over is the alone ness when family are out of touch and seldom around.
Thanks Family
God bless you all

What a lovely day this has been.  It was nice and cool today so I got my apples all peeled and sliced with sugar, flour, and cinnimon.  Now they are in the freezer ready for pies in the future.  Then on to my next project of making me some tomato preserves (16 pints) to put on my biscuits.  Finished the day off by mowing the yard.  Good night all.

Good night greatguns and everyone else.

I had a good day. Lorie Perkins one of my best friends ( one of the 4 Posse  ;))  stopped by for a massage and also to sit on the couch, tuck our feet under us and talk. It was wonderful. Then got around and had a cookout again with the family. Had one last night also so we definitely haven't starved this weekend.
Got home awhile ago and haven;t been on the forum for a few days much so thought I would catch up on e-mails and the news.. :)

All is quiet.. the full moon is glorious..the night sounds are making a musical choir outside my open windows. I'm going to get my shower and go to bed a little later on.

Sleep well friends...............

This has sure been a GREAT day.

Sun was out............since my flower bed was through doing its thing I pulled up what I needed to and found pots to transplant some for winter growing/or killing which ever comes first.

My cardinal vine/or humming bird vine (have forgotten which.....little red flowers that are trumpet shaped and vine like morning glory.......but pretty just the same.) finally got to blooming and is a very pretty plant.

I trimmed and stored my cages, and wire that I keep around my beds....and now I am just tired enough that I plan on spending the rest of evening in front of tv.
I am going to start the New (for me) Batman that is on ABC tonight......it seems to be on all evening, I will see if I can stay awake.

Hope your day has gone well and that all you wanted to get done, you did........have a great evening/night and catch you tomorrow.
God bless you all

Had a busy day today. Started at 8:00.  Worked on everything from laundry to the yard, to computer...to actually getting in some exercise time early this morning. Went dove hunting tonight. Got a few, but they sure weren't flying very good. Been catching up on e-mails and forum news.. and I think I will call it a night. It's almost 1 a.m. and hopefully I will be able to sleep better tonight than I did last night.  I didn't go to bed last night until almost 3 a.m. and then ending up FINALLY dozing off at about 5:30 this morning.  ::)
Calculating approximately 2 & 1/2 hrs shut eye...

I hate those nights that I can't turn my mind off and lay there tossing and turning like a hoot owl on cocaine. looking at the clock and seeing that it is getting closer and closer to the time I have to get up.
And Kjell snoring ..sometimes muttering in Norwegian.. and me..with my ear peeled back..wondering just what in the world he is saying.. ;D

But I have been yawning for the past 30 minutes..so while I am in yawn and burning eyes mode, I believe I will trundle off to the bedstead.

Good night, Sleep tight and don't let the bedbugs bite!

I'm sitting here in my recliner in the dark holding my little Bingo dog like a little baby.  He either has an allergy or has hurt his right eye.  I have been putting some drops in it for two days and it seemed to be getting better.  Then this afternoon he started to squint and cry some with it.  I raced and got some antibiotic salve for it and he is resting comfortably now, as long as I hold him.  Anyway, say a little prayer for healing for Bingo's eye please.  (And for me, I'm feeling like a bad doggie mom).

Day is done, and what a nice one. Lots of work accomplished and what a good feeling to see the results. Lunch out with Dale then a little more work. Phone visits with siblings celebration birthdays and anniversaries. Thursdays are Pickers and Fiddlers and I am trying to learn the quitar...tonight did pretty good. Friend from Peru came over to join us and we got some real good Blue Grass going along with the country and of course a gospel hymn or two. Back in time to watch the debate and maybe just maybe getting closer to making the choice. Goodnight, be safe, be well.

Good night from me!  Chuck and I were out most of the weekend down in Wichita Falls, TX at the Boot and Saddlemakers tradeshow/convention.  Chuck met some of his friends from his leatherworking forum (there's one of these for everything!) and we got to see some really neat boots and saddles.  We also came home with a new sewing machine, which will hopefully help make his projects go faster!  We got home about 8:00 pm on Saturday night, and stayed up until 1 am putting it together and practicing.  Today I had to visit some customers down in Pawhuska, OK, so I was out all day.  Got caught up on all my e-mails and forum fun this evening.  Normally, I'm off the computer in the evenings, but thought it might make tomorrow go better if I got caught up.
I hope everyone had a good weekend, and had a good start to the week!

I'm headed to Wichita tomorrow to run a bunch of errands, and want to offer to pick anything up for anyone!
I'll mostly be in East Wichita and Andover.  No, I won't do your grocery shopping at Walmart, but if there's an item or 2 you need, I can pick it up.  I'll check here in the morning (or you can PM or call the house), and will leave by 11 am.  I reserve the right to refuse service (in case someone tries to send me somewhere I don't want to go...adult novelty store or buy a car).   ;D  Although, I've got to get my oil changed at the Honda dealer, so if you want me to test-drive some new vehicle, I could probably work that in.

G'nite.  It's been a busy weekend, and tomorrow I help my boy move to Oklahoma for 8 weeks.  Boo Hoo  :'( I'm sure going to miss him while he's gone.
Today I made persimmon jelly!  Haven't tried it yet (except those little 'tastes' I had to do to make sure it was worth jarring up!) but they all sealed and set, so I'm happy.  Our neice & her husband came for a visit and we had a lot of fun.  We also went out and picked a bunch of green tomatoes to make picalily later this week.
The persimmon cookies turned out great, but I put too many chocolate chips in and will cut them to half next time.
Okay, gotta close now so I can be sharp driving through Tulsa tomorrow.  Stay warm tonight & keep an eye on your outdoor pets.

I am still up .. Can't sleep. Just too tired  I think.
Kjell and I are looking like 2 old sad Beagle dogs.. :)

I am trying to do some bookwork.. ( I can hear Fox news coverage but I just can't stand to look at it)
During the course of this evening, Kjell has turned it off 4 times ..saying  " That's it.. I am not listening to that crap  anymore".. and then sets  down at the computer.. then he gets up and goes back in and turns the damned thing on again.   ::)
Even the commentators are saying "Maybe he will change and be more bipartisan.. "Maybe he will be someone who will bring the world together".."maybe..maybe ,maybe"...

( and MAYBE an orange striped tiger will wake up and be a black hairy baboon)  ::)  but I can't ever give up hope.  :-\

I'm so very very tired and exhausted..mentally and physically. .and I know it is just beginning. I don't know what is in store for us.. but I do know that I am willing to do what it takes to take care of me and my family. So with love for God.. family and each other...I think we will be okay.

I am going to finish all the bill paying for the hardware store.. and then go crawl in my hot tub out on the deck.( the weather is just awesome.. ..a nice  breeze and a million stars in the sky) ..I'll  talk to God... and then come in and get my book and read.
( the new Stephan Hunter book is really good)

Then talk to God and the angels some more and go to sleep.

HE has to have a plan. All of this can not be happening unless there is a huge reason behind it. It may not be what we envision ..and it might have a bad outcome.. but there IS a plan.  We are not just thrown down here to fly by the seat of our pants. HE still has control of the car.. we just need to make sure we continue to trust HIM to stay behind the wheel.

Time to say goodnight ............

Goodnight.

Been to a cookout and Danny & Teri's tonight. David Oakleaf and all his band is here for the week, so it was fun time with friends and family.
We had way more food than an army could eat... but better too have to much than not enough.
Danny & Derek smoked a bunch of chicken and 2 full pork loins on the smoker.. I made homemade light rolls, fried cabbage and onions, fresh green beans with bacon and a cherry and blueberry cobbler. There was also brownies,  baked beans, green bean casserole, Cheesy rice, scalloped potatoes, deviled eggs, tator tot casserole & shrimp cocktail.
What a feast. It was delicious. David and the band played Friday night at Penny's Pub in Howard, and then went to Caney and played at Short Creek Saturday night. They play at Manhattan on Thursday and Friday and then at Eureka on Saturday. So it is a full week for those boys.
They are going to take a small down time break and go spend 2 days with David's Grandma Oakleaf on Monday.
It was nice to be with all of them and my boys did an outstanding job on the meat.

Tomorrow starts another week
My daddy goes in for a heart cath. in the morning...and if he needs further surgery, Sister and I will take off for Aransas Pass Texas..but we won't know anything until after tomorrow morning.
The last load of laundry is in.. the kitchen is cleaned back up..and the house is vacuumed.
So I need to get to bed....

Good night everyone. Sleep tight & don't let the bed bugs bite.  :)

Just heard from mama, and daddy has no blockages but his valve has to be replaced.
It is tight and measures 1.6 and should be at 2.0

This is what my mother had done several years ago........I think about 7 or 8 years and
altho she has other health problems..........the surgery she handled well and I guess if I
am honest.......Mom is touchy patient....meaning that if she has a hangnail she will
hemorage and that is just typical with her......but the surgery was good and so was
recovery. I think she had several weeks of rehab........1 week in hospital and then as
an out-patient.

I will keep Fred and your mother in my prayers and You, too.

God bless you all.

Diane, I am sorry for your loss...........it isn't easy letting go.............just a fact of life.

Hope you and Al have a great trip this week.........just think you will get a shot of warmth....and
I do hope you have fun while you are in Texas.

Now for me,  I started out the day feeling good and before I finished posting on here, my throat started hurting
and I started chilling................Don't you know I was in  the middle of doing laundry and altho the temp wasn't too  bad,
the wind-chill was.

I had to go to post office and stopped to have BP taken County nurse was here today.
By the time I got home, I rescued my clothes and put them all away and spent the rest of the day on the sofa......and slept most of the afternoon. (having a hard time finding my appetite) that may be a good thing............I did eat some yoghurt and plan on Soup for supper.

Fever seems to be  gone, but now I ache..............and I HATE BEING SICK!!!
Hopefully this is a 24 hour bug and I will feel better tomorrow. (I even had the flu shot)..........grr!!

I plan to watch ER tonight and want to see all my favorite stars  on there..........and if  God wills, that will happen. I hope to see you all tomorrow...........have a good night...................Hugs to all.
God bless

After all this cold weather today, I am heading to my blanket and my warm blooded dog and will be nice and warm tonight.

I just wanted to tell you about my early Christmas present to myself. I had been thinking my old man dog (Scooter) and I needed some younger blood around here to get us up and off the couch and get more active.

Well, I may have bit off more than I planned on, but, my homemaker had a little Yorkie who had some puppies and she brought one by for me to see and I have kept her all weekend............now, I plan on keeping her.

I am not use to all the activity. Scooter gives me a nasty look when the pup gets too close to him. But, has figured it out that when the puppy eats she isn't too neat about it.......and I let him clean up the left overs.

This little girl is only about 7 weeks old. Has the fastest squat in the midwest..........and we are starting to get use to her.
I really haven't named her yet. I am trying out a lot of different names..........so far she keeps responding to 'Squirt' so that will be it for now, till a better one comes along.

I am having trouble figuring out how much puppy chow to give her. She can't weigh 3 pounds....more like 2 and doesn' have a very good set of teeth.

I am soaking a table spoon of food in warm water and then cutting it up so she can eat. She has no problem eating or
pooing or p-ing........we do have a dose of worms and I know the puppy shots need to be started, but the weather is going to have to warm up better than this.

I am surprised when I put her in her borrowed crate at night she does let me sleep about 4 hours before she yells. I usually let Scooter out between 2 and 3 at night and when I put him out she gets to run a little and relive herself and then I can get her to go back to her crate.

Last night I did have to shut her in the bathroom with the door shut, and closed my b-r door........she did finally go back to sleep.

Anyone have any idea how much to feed her and if anyone has a very cheap small dog carrier.
Remember I am on the lowest fixed income and will need to pay for a vet to give her shots and worming.

Help would be nice. Advice if nothing else.

Need to go she thinks it is supper time and  I think it might be too.

Just thought I would give a yell and tell what I was doing.
One reason I am not on the forum as much as I usually am.

God bless you all, Judy

Congrats on your new addition, Judy!  Pets make you younger!
You could probably call one of the local vets and ask about the amount of dog food.  They might even suggest some soft food for a little while, and then gradually mix with hard food.  (Or soaking it works great, too!)  Although, we do have some vets on here who could lend some advice...

Judy!  Squirt & Scooter sounds like a good pair to me!!!  I think the new addition will good for you and Scooter, mix things up a bit and keep you on your toes.  Love to watch puppies drink warm milk out of a bowl and their back feet raise off the ground. (-:

Do not feed milk to puppies as they do not digest it well. Talk to the vet about her feeding. Congrats on your little 'Christmas Squirt'!

How wonderful!  I don't know if it is proper.. but I have raised about 7 sets of Brittany puppies and even with my small house dogs, I always put them on full feed of puppy chow after they got enough teeth to chew good. Doc Williams always told me that they would eat what they needed if the dry was always kept out. I never had a problem with any of mine.

Depends on the breed but until they were about 9-10 weeks old, I gave them soaked puppy chow mixed with water in nonfat dry milk with that cheap canned dog food mixed in it.
For a Yorkie, you would need to feed her probably 4 times a day in small portions. Like a spoonful each time. It is what I did when I got Taffy, my itty bitty toy poodle. But I still kept the dry out so she could crunch on it ( and not my slippers) although you will need plenty of old rolled up socks and toys for her. LOL
With the other dog ( which obviously likes to eat)  I don't know what you will do about the keeping the dry out all the time.

I'm no professional. I'm just going on what I used to do with all the litters I raised.
Puppies are so fun..but they sure can be a handful too.
Enjoy your canine family.  :)

I always come away form these conventions energized and ready to continue on with the battle .
Got LOTS and I mean LOTS of work to do in the coming weeks..
But right now.. I'm going to bed.

It is 10:23 PM *** we had a wonderful evening -- we were invited to a birthday party for a wonderful man -- good food, fellowship and a few liquid spirits.  It is so great for Fred and I to still be included in the celebrations of those that are our girl's age.

Diane, I am so glad that Al's check up went well and he had a good report, that is all important.  I am sure the two of you had a really
fun time a the festival.  that sounds like it would be a "jim-dandy city party".

Have been gone to Albuquerque, New Mexico  most of last week and part of this week and since returning have had my precious Mason for 4 days while his mama and daddy were away for some much needed "together get away time "  :)  He has been a whole lot of fun.. but that being said.. my desk looks like ...................well, I don';t know what it looks like actually as there is so much work piled up on it.. Video material  to go through.. pictures to sort for lay out pages.. bills to pay..  paperwork stacked high from all areas of the businesses....over 4,000 emails and personal messages that I haven't yet started to answer..sighhhhhhh.(http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)
So~~~ tonight I sorted and kinda got to read a little on this forum... and Tuesday, I will be without a 2 yr old who follows me around saying " I do it"..  ;D on everything that I am doing.. LOL
But you know what?
All the work in the world doesn't faze me if I can have that little guy around me giving me slobbery kisses and big hugs.
He does love his Mee-Ma.. :) so it has been worth putting the work on hold since I got back.

So you all have one more day to party before the old bitchy blond is back on the set.. (http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/grupos.gif) Don't forget to clean the place up.. ;)

Oh yeah.. and Albuquerque ( being high in elevation) was 97 and DRY..and not near as hot feeling as when we got home..  Filming went well.. got some great shots of the Wild Bunch Shoot Out Match and enjoyed visiting and being with old shooting friends.
But I LOVE home! :)

Its 10:00 and I'm going to bed early tonight.. Good night ..........

Sorry about the porn on the site tonight.. Spammers strike at any given time.

I was gone for the evening..and Kjell was away also for a short time. So no one was on the computers or by the phones.  I was in an area with crappy coverage so when we finally got within range of a tower.. my phone went crazy with voice mails and text messages. .. Scared me to pieces.. I thought someone had died..
But then I read the texts and listened to my messages and knew it was "naked bodies" that was causing my popularity.. LOL  but by then Kjell had fixed it..  :)

I'm going to shoot in a Cowboy Action Shooting Competition tomorrow so better get to bed. Good night and have a good rest of a weekend everyone.

I've had a great day and it's time to get some rest.  We spent the night at Harry's on Tuesday in St.Louis, then came on to Springfield, IL yesterday afternoon.  We've done some sight seeing, the guys played golf and we've spent time with a lot of old friends in the collectors club that we see only at CANvention.  Tomorrow we'll spend at more sight-seeing and on the convention floor looking at all the breweriana; a few meetings and some great food tossed in the mix will make for another wonderful and exhausting day.  I hope you are all dry, safe and well.  Goodnight Forum Friends.

Having a little girl is fun!  We play dress-up during the day and get lots of fun pictures!  Here is my favorite so far; Josey in her tutu and cowboy boots.  Every little girl needs those!  My sister made both for us.  Still a little big, but we couldn't resist getting a picture now.
Today was Chuck and my 5th wedding anniversary!  We had our favorite meal for dinner; lasagne.  And we toasted with sparkling grape juice that we got from the hospital in a little celebration gift basket.  Then daddy and Josey fell asleep together in the recliner.  What a nice end to the day!

We have been in Missouri all last week working and from there we had to fly out of Tulsa to catch a flight to Texas.. so it is almost 10 at night and I am right now as I type this on the set of a western movie in Austin Texas called Legend of Hells Canyon. We are filming the behind the scenes of making a movie. Let me tell you that watching a movie is a whole lot more fun than making the movie. They have been setting up the scene and set for about an hour now to shoot a 25 second segment...

Ok.. I'm back and its been almost 3 hours
Doc Holiday and Charlie his buddy are playing cards.. Charlie thinks Doc cheated him and they proceed to get in an argument and from there pull their guns and all hell breaks loose. Right now we have been working only on them getting up from the table.. slamming each other around.. pulling their guns.. then the director yells cut.. and they work on perfecting things a bit more.. then they do it all over again. This has been going on for about 3 hours now..
Its quite an eye opening adventure. The amount of work and detail and people it takes to make this western is mind boggling.
We will be doing a videos and interviews and put them on Down Range. When they are up and running I will definitely post them in here so you all can see. It should be interesting.

Oh and just in case you think I get to be in the warm weather while it is snowing back in Kansas.. think again. It is unseasonably cold here now.. weird. I was all excited cause I thought it would be warm here. Wrong.. Cold.. I have a coat on even ..  :(

Got to go.. just checking in as I had a break and set up the Mac to catch up on some work that I am sooooo soooo soooo far behind in..
( Does anyone feel sorry for me yet) ?  haha
I didn't think so..  :P

Good night everyone... for now.. but for me and this western movie crew the night of work is not done by a long shot.. I may post again when you all are getting up.. but I DO hope we get to sleep a little bit..

Last day on the set... it is 5:30 but we have about 10 more hours to work .. There is scenes that have to be shot at night so the crew and cast will be here late.. as they were last night.
There is something really euphoric about hugging Champagne Charlie and Doc Holiday..  Especially when they are totally in character ( which they stay in all they whole day so that the character doesn't get lost..
They way he honeys up me and the things he says ( all in character of course) Almost actually makes me feel like I am one of Doc Holidays loose women.. LOL
One of the perks about being around the cast.. **sweeet**

I'm very sad right now. I lost my 4 legged best buddy tonight. Back on Jan. 30 1999 we adopted a big strapping long haired black adult cat who was the delight of our lives. He was a special needs cat who had suffered a broken tail and because of it had some bowl problems due to nerve damage, but nothing we couldn't handle. He really started acting old over the past year and the vet thought he might be as old as 18 or so, we were never sure. Last week he started failing a bit and last night he really slipped, weak in the legs, lost bladder and bowl control and tonight he slipped away with his head on my hand. He was a great old guy. Oh, he was a bit like Samuel Clemens. Jan. 1999 was a blue moon month, hence the cat's name...Blue Moon. Dec 2009 is a blue moon month too, so he came and went on a blue moon. I'll really miss him.

Thank you.Today is very hard. Al dug Blue's grave before hand, right next to his old predecessor, Drizzle. It's a good thing too, because things have frozen solid here now and we have a major storm on the way. So by Saturday evening the two should have a nice white blanket of snow to make it look nice. This may be one of our uncommon big boomer storms, not sure yet. Usually we don't get those until February and not commonly even then. 6-12 inches is predicted so far, maybe more. When these come up from the south they pick up a lot of moisture. Then it depends on how close they come to the coast. That determines our snow fall amount.
Title: Re: Good Night All
Post by: sixdogsmom on December 18, 2009, 01:56:40 PM
I saw that weather along the coast last night on the news. We have yet to get a 'real' snow, however that is not uncommon here. Usually our snow comes when we are really ready for the end of winter; late Feb. and early March. Ugh! I would really like to see a decent snow, just to change the outlook on things. I just had to interrupt this to answer the door. It was Tim, a young man from our church who stops by nearly every day on his way home from New Beginnings, a workshop for the impaired. We have nearly the exact same conversation every visit with the same jokes and devilment. Tim is nearly blind and is autistic; he mows several yards around town and is pretty bored in the winter. His mother and me are pretty close; we sing together quite often. I always leave my paper out on the porch so that Tim can 'get' it for me, hes' a good kid. After Ted died, he asked me to marry him, I took that as a great compliment. 8)

Diane, I am sorry to read about your precious friend.  I adopted a 5 month old kitten last month and he is a lot of company.  It has been about two years since my last cat died and over a year since I have had an animal in the house.  It was finally time for another one, now if I can just train him to pick up his toys.

I hope you will be ready for another special friend soon.

I had a great day today and am SO ready for an early night. Had to drive up to Salina for an appointment to get the keyless entry on my vehicle fixed. I had to leave here at 7... it was negative eight (-08) degrees all morning.  The ding-dongs who I called when I discovered it didn't work gave me the wrong code; and all the guy today did was look up the right one in their records... The first guy (conveniently not there today) must have looked up the wrong vehicle!  A total day spent doing something that should have taken 5 minutes over the phone.  Oh well!

I went to Abilene and had lunch at M&L Grill ~ the best Philly Steak Sandwich I've ever had in my life!  Really made the day much better.

After that I attended a baby shower in Chapman. They are using the Catholic Parish Hall as their grade-school while the new one is being built and that's where the shower was. It was a nice time and the gift I brought, a diaper bag from Traci's Trends, was a big hit with the most "Ooohs" and "Aaahs" of the day.

Then followed a long trip home, but the temperature had risen to double! That's right, it was +08 degrees on the way home, almost balmy!  Ha!  The roads were great both ways, but I did stay on major highways.

I never did hear how many feet of snow fell there over the weekend, Diane. I heard two feet in DC, but no data from your area. We dodged the bullet again, got snow from Sunday night all through yesterday, but it melted just about as fast as it fell. Now we are into some serious cold, and as much as I detest the cold wind, it will do a lot to improve all the muck. It has already dried up a bunch. Keep warm!

As far as our snow goes, it's getting hard to measure because it's all still here and it's starting to pack down on top of it's self.  We got about 18'' near here, with some getting a bit more and some only about 7'' or so. It still looks like a lot. We have more coming Monday night.

I got about 5 flakes on my way to work yesterday morning but today was very sunny and almost warm.  Nice enough that the greatgrandkids got to go ourside for a wonderful few minutes.  They are going home tonight and I will miss them but will also enjoy the quiet.

I just can't imagine how all of you deal with the weather there.

Ms. Bear, I would not want your humid summer weather, but I guess we all get used to what we live with. It was like early spring here today, everybody was outside, even inventing reasons to do so I imagine. I spent a little time in the yard, darned rabbits have pruned the shrub roses I put out last year. Guess I will have to pack them with barbershop hair next year; that is if any have survived. Ted used to tell me that it worked anyway. He always bragged about the roses in Texas, how pretty they were. I also made a trip to the cemetary, said hello to the robins I met there, and installed the little solar powered lights I bought for the graves. To let them all know how they light up my life. Happy Valentines' Day everyone!

It was a beautiful day here in SoCal, almost 80 degrees.  We had our children and their families over plus an added bonus of one of my son's friends from high school and his wife and two children.  The reason for the celebration was:  Celebrating the Chinese New Year (in honor of our beautiful Chinese daughter-in-law), Valentine's Day and my wife's upcoming birthday all at once.  In the Chinese tradition, we had Chinese food and red envelopes were given to the children which contained money, another Chinese tradition.  She also provided us with our upcoming horoscopes for the year of the tiger.  She is not really all that traditional, but considers it fun to have a party for the Lunar New Year.  They have all gone home now.  Thank God for the peace and quiet!!!!

Edie, I don't know about Texas roses.  My husband kept the yard looking like a park and roses everywhere.  They were very pretty and bloomed almost year round but I have managed to kill all but three of them since he passed away.  It is about all I can do to keep up with the mowing.  I think I have even killed his Azealeas but I will replant them.

I am still getting up to ice on the windshield in the mornings but it warms up later in the day and was actually very nice when I got off today.

I am glad everyone there has survived the cold and bad weather.

We left here on Jan. 31st and spent the month of Feb in south Texas.  The weather was frightful--- cold, rainy and just plain Un-Texan...is that a word???  We went to Old Mexico for a couple of days, enjoyed that a whole lot, and our friends that we have spent the past 15 winters with were there, so that was GREAT.  Super Bowl Sunday was a Blast!!!  We danced, had cook outs, happy hours, played cards and just had lots of fun.  BUT -- the last two weeks, were NOT so much fun.  I started feeling bad on Sunday the 14th - I had a mountain oyster fry for 14 friends, the next day, I could not speak a word, and was that way for two days.  Coughed, and ran a temp and ached all over.  that continued for a week, and before I could get well, Fred had the same thing, only I do think he was a bit worse than I was.  We went to our Doctor there and he prescribed us some high powered meds, and put Fred on some steroids, to protect his heart valve from all the hard coughing, plus 3 other kinds of meds.  By the time we had taken all we were supposed to, we both felt better, just in time to pack up and come home.
We left the park yesterday morning at 10 AM  stayed the night in Greenville, TX then come on home today.  It is great to be back home, and thankful for our safe journey, and the love and friendship shared.

Wilma, I do agree that it has been gorgeous today, wind and all. I spent all afternoon outdoors, cleaned out a long neglected flowerbed, and replanted it with an azalea, some iris, lillies, and a package of strawberries. I topped it all off with a scattering of wildflower seed. So something should grow out of all that mess. I have a helper coming tomorrow to get the abundance of trees out of the eastside yard. We cleared the rest of the yard two springs ago until he started having problems with a kidney stone. So we have a goodly amount of little trees to get out tomorrow. I will be happy to get that done. Last year, I didn't get much done, it seems kind of foggy to me. I was still in shock I think. Also, anti-depressants aren't all they are cracked up to be, I am still trying to get past some of the side effects. Digging in the dirt helps, believe me. Happy spring everybody!  :D

We've had lots of wind here; but, we have been working in the yard and getting the patio flowers ready since last Friday.  My tulips, hyacythins, wild violets and border iris are very pretty right now.  I spent all day Saturday potting new annuals, and moving some flowers that we decided needed to be some place else.  Frank planted 7 new Knockout roses for me(I made a  correction it was 7 not 5), and also planted more tomatoes, several different colors of bell peppers and banana peppers.

We haven't gotten the patio furniture moved onto the patio yet, but will shortly and he will put the patio lights up.  It just takes a lot of time.

I also have some herbs out and need to pick up a few more.  Have several hanging baskets on the patio, so when they get larger and some start blooming, it will be pretty once again.  Things that I was used to getting early, come in quite a bit later here, so it is hard to wait on some of the plants that I want.  The cannas and hardy hybiscus are coming through the ground now, and the clematis is budded.  The pear tree were pretty and now the redbud is in bloom.   At any rate, it is starting to feel like spring here once again.

Our lilacs and wisteria are just beginning to peek, the tulips are tops and the later daffys look good, but then again we have frost warnings for tonight so I don't dare do too much yet. Diane, I have to agree with you, but sometimes you just can't get them to quit.  We had a not so old man die as the result of fighting fire while we were living in Severy.  He was just out of the hospital and wouldn't listen to anyone telling him he shouldn't be in the smoke.  Now my husband was a little wiser.  After spending some time in the hospital with bronchial pneumonia he decided he would be better off staying away from the smoke, so he stayed on the radio and helped where he could.

I forgot to mention the pretty little crab apple tree at the very foot of the backyard. It was a mark-down at one of the farm stores, a whole dollar one hot August afternoon. It is paying me back this year with each branch a fully five inches around with white blossoms; an extension of the gorgeous pear season we had. All the trees are perfection this spring, I even saw some apricots in full blossom, they usually get bitten. Myrna, I am envious of your yard man. Sounds like you have a beautiful yard.

Jo's column in the paper today mentioned the actions of animals when bad weather is moving in.  Being another farm/country girl, everything she said is true.  Today I noticed something different about the birds.  There were blue jays in my feeder all day.  Two and three of them at a time.  I didn't notice many other birds, but the blue jays were acting as if they had to get filled up.  Tomorrow our weather is supposed to change.  There have been reports of heavy rains in the system that is moving in.  Do you think this might be what the blue jays are trying to tell us.

Jo also mentioned how the old mother hen would cluck and gather her chicks to protect them during a storm.  This is true except for one old hen that I used to know.  During my teen years I was the only one home when one of the worst storms in years hit.  This old hen had a coop that she could stay in, but would she?  No!  I couldn't even get her to go near it.  I did finally get her into the barn with her chicks and she would stay there until it quit raining.  Then she was out again, then I was out again and we would go through the same thing.  I finally got her pushed to her coop where I could lock her in.   Our old dog wasn't any help.  He knew there was something different about this storm and I couldn't get two feet away from him.  The clouds were funny that day and things just weren't right.  After the storm, my father and brothers came home.  They had been combining wheat about six miles away.  The hail hit where they were and when it was through the country looked like the middle of winter.  There wasn't any wheat left standing.   The field looked like it had been disked.  The trees were bare.  I don't know what I would have done if it had hit like that where I was.

Well Diane, they blew the sirens here in Moline, usually pretty serious when that happens. In fact that is the first time the storm sirens have sounded in quite a few years. However, most of the action was with the tv weatherman as usual. I did make the basement stairwell accessible, found the flashlight, and turned on the basement lights. The two scardeycat dogs that live here were not nearly so worried as they had been about half an hour earlier. We got just a little rain out of it, and the atmosphere 'feels' stormier right now than it did all day. Thank goodness it didn't warm up any more than it did, we might have really been in for it if the temp got into the eighties. Thanks for your concern.  ;)

Here we are on alert for 33 tonight so I had to wrap up the annuals and toms as best I could. We'll have to get up early and unwrap everything and hope for the best since we take the train to Boston tomorrow morning. Anybody want me to throw some tea in the harbor for ya?  We'll be staying right there. Just got back home a few minutes ago. Newark Nite was another success. Had about 30,000 people up and down the middle of Main Street, as we took back the town now that UD has closed for a few weeks. It's a great street fair with lots of entertainment, food, music and fun. It was really hot but there was a nice breeze and we had our fire prevention tent set up to keep the setting sun from baking us. A little storm is just now moving in but it was time for us to shut down anyway.

Diane, perhaps the seemingly disinterest in D-Day is because very few of us remember it.  At that time our news source was a 15 minute radio newscast, the daily paper and the newsreel at the movies.  I was perhaps 15 years old and more interested in my own age group.  I do remember the day the war ended.  Our little town didn't have much of a way to announce news and usually when the fire bell rang it was because there was a fire.  A sure way to get an audience.  This particular day, I heard the fire bell, but not being of any use in fighting a fire, I stayed home.  My brother, however, was 18 and he responded only to come back and tell us that the war was over.  This was the war in Europe.

I think you are right. One fellow about my age, on another local forum I'm involved with, went on a tirade yesterday because very few of the forum  members mentioned D-Day. I think there are only a few of us who are old enough to remember Viet Nam. , let alone WWII . Like it or not time passes and the relevance of such things dwindle. I was just surprised because we've got a couple on here who eat, sleep and drink camouflage and I thought for sure they would say something. It doesn't matter, just a curiosity.

Events fade with time.  While there are many of us "old-timers" that remember World War II, or at least the stories we heard growing up, the next generation doesn't have that experience and only learns it as a history lesson.  My father-in-law who lived with us for many years was a WWII veteran.  He proudly wore a baseball cap that said, "WWII Veteran".  He went to the South Pacific and had many stories to tell.  My children might have listened to some of those stories, but to them it was just an old man's stories.  I doubt they felt much of a sense of what the country was going through at that time.  Even Vietnam, now over 35 years old, is not of great importance to my children's generation other than it being just another history lesson.  The wars in the Middle East is more of a reality for them because someone they know might be in the service.  Time marches on.

Yes that's true. Even at our fire house there are only a couple of WWII vets still alive. Very old men with almost nobody to talk to share the old stories. One was in the Coast Guard and never saw battle but remembers all the black out shades along the coast and the street lights painted black except for a little slit on the boardwalk side along the beaches. He talks about the guys on shore patrol walking the beaches at night with their dogs. Rehoboth Beach still has a couple of the tall concrete submarine spotting towers that almost got torn down years ago. People put up a huge protest and they were saved.  Now those the young ones enjoy seeing them. Then there was Korea...

I lost the trivia contest at the church social last night by one point and was totally embarrassed.

The last question was: "Where do most women have curly hair?"

..........so I shouted out my answer, and got asked to leave

Apparently the correct answer is:   Africa .

We had a Hebb family reunion today in Howard with 56 relatives present.  It was an exciting day commemorating the 75th anniversary of this family meeting together every year starting in 1935.  The most amazing statistic is that four relatives who attended the first reunion in 1935 were present today, all in great shape.  It was a fun day!  Good night all..............

So they have a new commercial out on drunk driving put out by the Kansas Department of Transportation. It even includes a website where you can watch the commercial and take a test. We watched it and my Jim kept saying, but I'm Jim, I'm Jim.  :D  ;D  :D  ;D

Here's the link to the commercial:

This was on TV a few minutes ago. They were warning people in Kansas that there is a fraudulent Robo call going around telling people who are planning to vote on WEDNESDAY to be sure to bring your voter registration card and proof of home ownership. ;D ;D ;D ;)

I finally finished contacting the parents of all the fire prevention winners yesterday and most are coming, so we'll have about 168 family members, plus a few of us of course, to "party on" on Nov.18. I've also been spending a lot of time sorting and tossing out 40+ years of teaching outlines from elementary school through EMT and fire safety. (four 4 drawer file cabinets) I saved the things I'm currently using, but it felt like I was throwing away old friends. I finally tossed out the last of Mom and Daddy's end of life paperwork, last medical bills and such. Even now it made me very sad. Then I got the nicest surprise.I received an unexpected delightful call from Kansas. In a few days I'll be receiving a package that means the world to me. It had gone on to live a well deserved life with a dear lady who meant a lot to my Grandmother and now it is coming back to me. I am so pleased. That call sure gave me a needed lift.

Diane, you are braver than I am.  I still have my father's papers, including all of his income tax returns, and he has been gone since 1976.  My mother's papers were recently returned to me for disposal and I chickened out and put them in storage.  She has been gone since 2001.  I might mention that a treasured paper of his that I have is a 1937 ledger that he kept on income and expenses.  I was reading through it and noticed entries for my little brother, entries for my big brother and for my sister but I wasn't seeing anything for me.  Then I realized that he wasn't putting me down as Wilma, but as Babe.  There were entries for me.  Not income entries.  I was only 7 at the time.  That was the year he paid off the piano that we all learned to play on.

What wonderful memories Wilma.  When I went through some of mother's papers I found the receipt for the hospital bill when I was born.

I am still going through papers and things from my husband, he died in 2004.  Really need to get mother's things organized and some kind or order in that room.

Diane, it sounds like you have really been busy.  Must be nice to accomplish so much.  Maybe after the first of the year I will get the back room done and fabric organized so I can start sewing again.

Thanks for sharing Bonnie! This is a great way for music to get to the people. Sometime this past year another innovative thing was done in New York; they placed a lot of second hand pianos on street corners for people to enjoy. :D

Bonnie thank you so much for sharing that. If you all know about the Wanamaker organ(now Macy's) and the eagle I'll keep quiet. But they have quite a history. I've been fortunate to see it and hear the organ almost every year for many many years.

Just a heads up. I am heading up home tomorrow. I hesitated to go when the cold front............was so iffy.
With the weather saying it will be in 50's tomorrow and the weekend, altho I will get chewed out for not coming today, I still
didn't want to head across the wide open ranch land between here and Topeka.........I don't have a cell phone and since I had the blow out, am just a little fearful about traveling.
Keep me in your prayers. I will attempt to post my devotions tomorrow..................usually have them on before 8. I told dad I would be there before 3 and I still want to go to Mom's gave before I head to dad's.
Depends on traffic and how things go in morning.
Steve will keep dogs and keep them and cats fed and I don't have to go to Howard and then get to 400. Adds mileage and I will have enough.
God willing I will be back here Monday morning. God bless you all.

Bonnie, I just now seen this.  It is one of my very favorite songs.  I have it on record by the Morman Tabernacle Choir and it is beautiful, but this was absolutely the best.  I am sitting here with chills and tears and if that don't put you on your knees to thank the good Lord for all he has given to you, you definately have a problem.  Thank you so very very much for sharing.  I wish I knew how to share this on facebook, but guess I'll just enjoy it here.  Christmas Blessings to you and yours.

I'm not quite sure how to handle this, but some of you might have known the Creamer family from Moline, now of Decatur Il. Sadly, Faron, who would have been 50 on Jan 2 died suddenly of a heart attack yesterday. I met him/them through face book, seemed to be a nice family. Just thought I'd share that.

Just finished having dinner with the delightful family across the street. They had family in from near Seattle and all over this area with cousins by the dozens and several new family members by marriage and by birth. Lots of songs and happy laughter with light snow all afternoon. Just beautiful and very Christmasy. Some weren't leaving until Monday, but we have a potential big storm coming in tomorrow morning, so they may not make it out until at least Tuesday. I know, I know, nobody out there cares so why do I bore you? Sorry, I'll go back to my hole. :-\ Sigh... hope you all had a nice Christmas your way.

Thursday was very warm here and yesterday it cooled off and we had a lot of rain and cold wind.  Today was dry but very cold and wind, so glad I didn't have to stay out in it.

I worked today so someone else with family could stay home, sure glad I don't have to work tomorrow.  At least today the store was closed and we were just picking up and trying to get some the stuff that will be clearanced tomorrow all together.

As I drove through the town just south of me I noticed that the Jack in Box and Sonic were both open and very busy.  I guess the ones here in the town I live in were open also.  I don't think they shoud be open on Christmas.

Diane, I am glad you enjoyed your Christmas.  Be safe for the New Year.

As we drove to and from Wichita, we noticed quite a few places were closed. The Sonic must be a regional thing, because the ones we saw were closed. As were the McDonalds and the Taco places. Burger King was open. Dillons and WalMart were both closed. iHop was open, as was Golden Corral. Most of the convenience stores were open. I know P&J's was for awhile - and that's very much appreciated!

Diane, why do I care what you do and how things are on the East coast?  I really don't know unless it is because that is where you are.  I enjoy hearing about the weather where I am not.  I find what other people are doing interesting because there is so little that I can get out and do.  All right, so I am just nosy.  It is one of the things that I do best.  So if you don't do it for anyone else, continue to post your weather and activities just for me.  Who knows, there might be someone else that has to stay close to home and looks forward to your posts as a way to get away.

And on that note,  "Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night."

Diane and Al, friends always care about each other no matter what. Forget all the baloney you might see on another thread; it's just that; baloney!!! OP is included in this too! In my heart I know that I could probably tell you that if I need something,  that you probably would try and see that I get it. Not that others around here would not try and help, just that you would be one of the first in line. That is the Christmas spirit, and is what The Christ intended when He commanded us to love one another. I am happy you had a great Christmas with snow and company, we are now looking for a New Year with a storm coming in. Hooray! The fire threat diminishes by the day and that is good news for us. Until we are banned for our politics just keep on postin' gal! Keep on postin'!!!   PS. Merry Christmas to you too Wilma!

Actually I would try to help anybody out there if I could and would be useful....especially the ones who dislike me so much, because that is what My God expects of me. When prayers are needed I do send them, I don't check which list they are on first. Thanks Edie, I really appreciate it.
Unfortunately, like many, this is also a very sad time of year. I even had a dream about Daddy last night. Not a good one. But, he would have laughed at me for being sad because he is with Mom, where he wanted to be. So onward with another day. It's very overcast here and could snow at any minute, but the big snow isn't due until later this evening ...maybe... the forecasters keep changing the track. 1-3 inches is sure different from 8-12....or more. At least with school off tomorrow the pressure is off somewhat and the kids can really enjoy it.   Is it too soon to predict snow totals for your area yet? Enjoy the holiday week.! :-*

You sure count with me. ;) It 's snowing hard here now but it looks like the worst will be east of us right up across New Jersey and New England will get hammered hard.  The ski resorts will love it and after last winter they can keep it!

I'm just north of the elk county line and I enjoy your postings of your weather, your food, your part of our great nation.  And I truly don't have a problem with someone sharing their knowledge on any subject with me.  As you well know I love hearing from Texas, Colorado, and California as well.  I find if I was only to visit with those that totally agree with me on everything in the world that keeps my knowledge pretty limited.  Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas.  Diane, the next time you are eating some of your wonderful seafood just remember that I am so jealous and would love to be there dining with you.  So all of you ladies take care and have a fabulous New Year!

Thank you! I'd love to be able to dump a bunch of blue claw crab on newspapers on the deck picnic table and pick crab all afternoon with all of you. It's a great way to spend a lazy summer afternoon. Have a wonderful Christmas week.
