Question bout' the " holy black"......
« on: May 22, 2006, 06:16:12 PM »
OK folks, got question I'm a might embarassed to ask, but here goes anyhow....

I have a .45 LC old model Vaquero. I have always used store bought ammo, and had no problems, ( except price :o )
But after read'n some of your comments regarding " the holy black", it's sparked my intrest.
Are y'all load'n yer own, or can it be purchased ready to go?

Much obliged,
Whiskey

In addition to Goex, Cliffhanger's "Cowboy Cartridge Co." and Gads also sell ammo loaded with real Black and will also reload your brass for more savings, see http://members.dslextreme.com/users/cliffhanger/cowboycartridgeco/

and

http://www.gadcustomcartridges.com/#cowboy

Ten-X and Ammo-Direct and probably some others sell ammo loaded with BP subs, Ten-X uses American Pioneer Powder and I think Ammo-Direct uses Clearshot (which can be underpowered and back out primers, so beware).

Enjoy the smoke, flames and boom !  ;D

I thought about load'n my own, but I have no experience with it. I do have black powder pistols and rifles, and have cast plenty of bullets, but never loaded a cased round. My father does his own loads for his Sharps rifle and I might put a bug in his ear about show'n me the ropes......

If anyone has any advice or "tricks of the trade" I would sure be obliged to hear about it.....

I've though about loading my own...

I wondered what the entry level price for the equipment would be, what is needed to do it right etc.
Right now ,I have a reloader that does my once or twice used brass at $11.00 a box of fifty w/ Cleanshot.
I'm not sure I could beat that price myself factoring in the investment of equipment.

Have you had any problems with the Clearshot reloads?

I'm a touch confused. Abilene said "Clearshot" has some issues, but that could have been because of the company loading it.
So "Cleanshot" and "Clearshot" are different? Was that also a typo?
I've always used Goex in my cap n ball guns....

Clean Shot was brand name... It is now American Pioneer Powder...
something about a law suit with Hodgdons Pyrodex over their solid pelletized charge and Clean Shot's patent infringement sticks.

Clear Shot is a Goex product I think....

In any case no problems with my reloads in my Henry or SXS.
Haven't tried it in my Spencer or OpenTops yet need to shoot a few more Boxes of Schfields to get enough brass.

But I read this and have no concerns

Sounds good to me. Think I might have to borrow Pa's reloading set and give er a whirl.... got a few spent shells I could experiment with......

Once again, thanks to all for the good feedback!

Have fun with yer 'speramenting.  If you feel kinda lost, you might want to wander over to the Darkside.  Lots of good advice there.  Word of caution though, once you start down the path to the Darkside, few people ever turn back.  Most end up like me, deciding to sell the high power stuff for more black powder stuff...
