Brass shotgun shells
« on: May 14, 2006, 07:10:54 AM »
I just reciieved my brass shotgun shells for Hammer double compnay and impressed.

http://www.hammerdouble.com/products.htm.

I got their hand tools and enough stuff for 500 relaodings.

The best thing is they are perfect size (2-1/2) for my Martini-Henry shotgun and still do fine in my side by side and 1887 lever gun.

If I get the time will load up some for match this coming weekend and report results!!

Pony Racer:

Thank you for that link!

I have passed it on to some folks - in particular a fellow who has been keeping an English pinfire shotgun operational by tediously making his own shells by hand, using modern plastic shotshell hulls, trimmed finishing nails and percussion caps ... and then having them last only 3 or 4 firings.   :-[

He was certainly happy to learn of this company's pinfire hulls, I assure you!   ;D

Tks for your reply - based on it I forwarded the link to my brother in law in Kentucky.  His family had recently bestowed on him many of his grandfathers guns (family is from Belgium and France) which included a few old but very serviceable pinfire shotguns.

All I can say is that his grandfather took great care of these weapons - cause he definitely shot them but they are in "mint-shooting" condition.

He relayed to me that he is sure his Papa would be happy to know that the old sxs's will sing again soon!!

It is great that a source has been found for the pin-fire shells. I also like the fact that each order includes all of the wads and cards needed to load them. I reload AA's and have the fiber wads and cards already; but for someone just starting, including them is a nice plus.

First 25 are loaded.

Incredibly not complicated at all!!  A little time consuming with hand loading tools but not bad.

Will load other 25 tomorrow - may not get a chnace to try them out until first weekend in June.

Thanks for the link!

I have some 20 guage brass shells, but haven't been able to find the right size wads to load them.  These folks have kits of all the wads, cards and such to load.  Gonna order a couple.

Updated 05 June - Brass shotgun shells

Wow what fun to shoot them brass shells.

Clean-up (dish soap and water) and drying them (20 mintues in oven at 220') was a snap and they are already re-primed.

They are not roll crimped enough to enable the drop two mechanism in the cap 1887 - however, they worked flawlessly out of the 1887 - single loaded and worked like a charm in my side by side.

I am hooked - as soon as I save up some money will buy 50 more shells - so that I can shoot two day matches with-em.

Just a note as a FYIO, or FWIW.  A couple of times in the past I've come up short with wads for my metalic shotshells and have resorted to Dryer Lint scraped off the filter screen on my clothes dryer.

I stuff enough in the shell to give me a half inch or so thick wad after I snug it down inside the hull.  It serves the purpose and is cheep.  Haven't had any burn or catch fire that I'm aware of.  Even those balls of lint that were mixed in with cat hair haven't created any noxious gases.

Have fun with yor Brass Hulls.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.

Why Grapeshot, you just gave me a fine idea about what to do with all the belly button lint I've collected over the years!  ;D
