Coal Oil?

I think Hoppes #9 has a different smell now. Or is my nose out of joint? (I left that wide open.  )

I fergot yer right, I only use it in my 28 gauge 870 and when the changed it about 10 years ago I bought up all my gundealer had.  Sadly I am almost out.  The old formula was kerosene and
amyl nitrate (called bannana oil by most because it smell similar to bannanas)  as a base.  I've got the original formula for Hoppe's #9 upstairs in my note's.  Might have ta brew up a batch if'n I can find some real (not foo foo) coal oil.

So you see Slim, there rally ain't no Santa Claus, but there is really bannana oil.

Do not clean yer gun with amyl nitrate, it is used ta dialate blood vessels, yer bullet might not fit the bore afterward.

Amyl acetate is a paint solvent and is used ta make artyficial flavors.   It comes from coal tar. (not the same thing as coal oil)

I may not know much bout pewters, but I know enough chemistry ta be dangerous.  (Now I wonder who I sent the post with a similar message too?)

Is amyl nitrate an ester? We messed with esters in science class. One smelled like Juicy Fruit (banana).

Amyl acetate is an ester like most paint solvents, if it smelled like bannanas it was almost certainly amyl acetate.  Amyl nitrate is not an ester, I was mistaken when I said it was bannana oil.  I was full of bannana oil er rather mistaken.

I guess she could have grown up to be a "Yuppie", although she'd probably be a bit too old for that designation; "yuppies" came from the next younger generation (about 10 - 20 years younger than me and her).  I do remember she was very "petite", real dark hair, dark eyes with heavy lashes, dark olive skin, and she had a really hard fist.  OW!!!

Delmonico, you are partial right about the heads on sailing ships; under the Poop deck at the stern was officer country and thier heads were located there.  The rest of the crew had to make do with heads at the bow of the ship located along side the bowsprit, thus the term "Head", as the ship plunged up and down thur the waves it flushed the head.

Thanks if I think about it I would have remembered that.  I know from somewhere, on ships with passengers they "POOPED" off the back.   But then it would be better for payin' folks not ta have ta mingle with the regular crew, or at least the one's with money.

Gettin back to the original question - correct me if I am wrong (and if ya dare!) - but it was my understanding that "coal oil" predates the use of petroleum by many decades (or maybe more) and that coal oil was a product of the refining of coal (just as coal gas was).

"Kerosene" was one of the earliest distilates of crude oil and had nothing to do with coal.

Since the coal region of Penn. is also the petrolum region, what we call kerosene in this country and the Brits call Parrifin is nothin' but kerosene and really don't have anythin' ta do with coal except the name branded on it. At first kerosene was the only thing saved, later other things like what we call vasoline and cosmoline were saved.  The biggest problem was that highly flamable stuff they had ta burn all the time cause it was dangerous, Gasoline.
