Evening all.

Yes I'm early (it's 9:50pm, Sept 30), but if I don't do it now I'll forget. ::)

Little to report today. Spent all night surveilling my kingdom from the Porcelain Throne, then Went to the lookout tower and did some handyman stuff. Then to the station and washed/waxed the truck I was borrowing for the trip.

In other news, I'm thinking of building a semi custom rifle, based on a Savage Axis action (because they're cheap, and have interchangeable barrels). The plan is to make a lightweight hunting rifle that has more range than 30-30, but less oomph (read, less money turned into smoke) than the 280, for when I hunt in a the Trinity River breaks (yes I made that phrase up. Locally we just call it "downriver"). The old Winchester works great in the brush around my hometown, and the 280 is good for the high ridges of the Trinity Alps, open fields of the Sacramento Valley, and if I ever draw the local elk tag (I've applied for 17 years with no luck, but there's always next year). But I want something that fits the middle ground around the river better, where it's a mix of brush, oak Savannah and open rocky faces, all near vertical. For those so inclined, there are some good YouTube videos on the Trinity River canyon that depict what I'm describing.

I'm leaning toward either 6.5 Grendel, or a 257 Roberts in a long action. Mostly just to be different. I already have guns that fit this description, but that's never stopped me from buying a new gun before. ::)

This has been your monthly dose of sleep-deprived, over caffeinated Trinity Kid.

Kid, have you thought about a .308? Ammo is found everywhere, reasonably price, very accurate with enough power to take just about any North American game and won't beat up your shoulder like a long action caliber. Plus a little weight savings in the shorter action. Just a thought from the other side of the country.

Got home late from a missions committee meeting after church tonight.  Taken two ten-minute naps between reading documents for work and rocking the baby back to sleep.  Now heading to work for a while.  Hoping I can get enough done fast enough that I can get some more sleep before tomorrow.

TK, I've shot a couple deer with a Winchester Model 100 in .308.  Good combo for purposes like you describe.  But either of your cartridge choices would be more fun just cause they're less common, and the .308 is probably a bigger bullet than you need.

Starting out, I also had good luck with a Featherweight in .243.  Doesn't take a whole lot of gun if you do your part.  (And when I didn't, a different caliber wouldn't have made much difference.)

Morning y'all.
Coffee and tea are hot.

'Tis 65 and light rain. "Cloudy. Patchy fog in the morning. Showers in the morning, then scattered showers in the afternoon. Highs in the upper 60s. Light and variable wind becoming northwest 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Chance of rain 80 percent."

My initial thought had been to go with a 308-derivative. But my brother uses 308, and my mom uses 243. I have to be the odd duck. 260 Rem is on my short list though.

Realistically, I'm looking for a caliber that is a bit of an odd duck, kind of like my 280. That kind of why I'm leaning toward the 7x57 based cartridges (257Roberts/6mmRem), just because they're different enough in my area to not know anyone else that has one ::) and I reload, so ammo isn't much of an issue.

Back up, crashed and back up 3 times today, Phone came back and was working at 11:20
No idea what tomorrow will bestow.... :-\

NOT a fan of ATT/Quantum   >:(

I was with T-Mobile and had bad coverage out here on my acreage.
ATT coverage was fine until it wasn't.

I grew up with landlines and Rotary phones, New Tech befuddles and frustrates me.

That's about how it's been for my station getting internet. We still only occasionally get working landline phones, and internet is 50/50.

Lincoln/Omaha Heaviest 24 hour and heaviest Sept on record.  Guy going to Omaha to work over in Iowa went in where there was a bridge out, he didn't see in the dark and rain about 4 am, they found the car but not him.

Close to me in the flood area (missed me by about 10 miles) Guy hung onto a tree till rescues, car still missing.  In both Omaha and Lincoln, they are trying to figure out because it came up so fast, they may have lost some from the homeless camps along the creeks.

Lincoln FD did over 60 water recuses. Several lakes that you couldn't get a boat in because the lake was down to below the boat ramps you still can't get in because the boat ramps are in the lake.  They said most came up 6-8 feet in just hours.

From that Hurry-cane in the Pacific.  Everything was right and shoved the moisture up thru Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska into Iowa.

They said had it been colder there would have been 40-100 ft of snow.

El Niño tends to bring more tropical storms in the eastern and central Pacific, but fewer in the tropical Atlantic.
It's no joke, Hawaii and now Baja, Mexico, Calif., Texas and you central folks have taken a major beating. Then there was the soared heat we all had, and Mid-Atlantic and Nor'easter beatdown.
However, we southeastern coasters, Gulf and the Caribbean have a record few storms.
Wind shear and Saharan dust have kept us hurricane free and nearly TS free through the peak storm months.
At the risk of sounding flippant, WE aren't in the cross hairs, this year.

I other news we are told, the internet outages are due to area cabling installs
something about rolling outages because they have to suspend service, I claim BS
Why did they or have they not informed customers we would experience this outage???
The phones situation was just a coincidence; seems this was systems failure which put us SOS mode "only emergency calls".

Anyway, we are told we will get credit on our bill whoop T doo ::)

Phone issue was resolved as system outage, "SHE" called on my daughter's phone
(HER phone {same ATT account} was also in SOS mode)

Internet connection (coincidence) has so far been "UP" however. it may be that it's the weekend and cable installing workers are not working.  :-\

Currently 79° Mostly sunny, Scattered light rain showers are expected.

Latest bayonet for my collection is moving thru USPS, With the Wednesday delivery date.

Afternoon all.

Double trouble of bad timing around here. Alternator went out in the car, and I caught some sort of bug. Alternator should be in tomorrow. Bug hopefully resolves quickly.
