CAUTION!!  CAUTION!!  CAUTION!!  I went and had a gander.  The set in question is a really good looking pair of guns.  Butt and However.  the guns are "THIRD" Generation Colt Percussion.  They were built entirely from Uberti parts and were completed by Mr Imperato of Henry fame.  The third generation were not particularly well built and Colt will NOT litter (LETTER Otto, LETTER) the guns.  Whilst the "Custer Set" look really good, all that glitters is NOT gold.

The guns will exhibit Uberti Percussion "Short Arbor" syndrome and will require a goodly modicum of work to the well shootable.

The estimated/requested/suggested bid is way Way WAY out of line considering the actual origin of the guns.  Caveat Emptor fer sure!!!

i think all 2nd and third Colt Gens have the short arbors, at least they dont say Uberti and if that isnt good enough, maybe gander to Rock Island Auction and spend your retirement on guns you will never shoot! just sayin

While your post is full of information that's well over my head, I can't help but wonder what it means to "litter" a gun?

I assume that's a typo?

:) Thank you Begle and Wildman :o   Twould appear "Otto" strikes again.  Of course the wurd was supposed to be "Letter" as opposed to litter.

MiddletownBob:  You are correct.  ALL of the Second and Third Generation Colt labeled percussion guns suffer the dreaded Short Arbor Syndrome.  They are after all just gussied up Uberti.

I do believe, the Second and Third generation "Colt" percussion guns were actually never expected to be used in anger.  More of a "collector" or a "Gee, Looky What I Got" item.  I worked on quite a number of them for customers who actually wanted to Play wid 'em.

I do admit that Custer Set of 1861s be wicked good looking but they aren't (to my position) good looking enough to be worth the ridiculous estimated bid price.  Twould also appear the holder also has a "reserve."  Caveat Emptor!!!

Thank you. So "letter" in this case would mean issue a certificate of authenticity for them?

Yep, 2nd Gen. aka Black Powder Series will letter made under Colt's license agreement at the old Iver Johnson plant.

I can see them going for $2K pretty easy.  You couldn't get a new set of Ubertis hand engraved like that any cheaper.  Nice grips, too, remind me of Tru-Ivory.
