Wild Bunch Naval uniform
« on: October 03, 2023, 07:03:48 PM »
Looking for period correct Wild Bunch Naval blue undress uniform (1913). It's going to have to be a reproduction because this tall Norwegian is a lot bigger than they were then. ;D

I would love a 1904 Marine uniform like they wore in The Wind And The Lion. Have a nice Krag.

Go here for the complete US Navy Uniform Regulations, which you can use online or, better yet, download a complete PDF file (download options at lower right on the page this link will take you to) -

https://archive.org/details/1905UniformRegulationsOfTheUnitedStatesNavy

I gather the 1905 regulations were the first to include illustrations (photographs) of the uniforms, including rank insignia, etc., and were in force until 1913 ...
Rattlesnake Jack Robson, Scout, Rocky Mountain Rangers, North West Canada, 1885
Major John M. Robson, Royal Scots of Canada, 1883-1901
Sgt. John Robson, Queen's Own Rifles of Canada, 1885
Bvt. Col, Commanding International Dept. and Div.  of Canada, Grand Army of the Frontier

Didn't see any sailors in the movie, must have been when I went for popcorn.

No sailors in The Wild Bunch but weren’t the troops manning the Colt 1895s sailors in The Wind and the Lion?

Indeed they were.  Sailors were often part of landing parties.  Loved that movie!

You are going to want the look into the US Navy's occupation of Veracruz (April 21 to November 23, 1914)
This is the time frame of the Wild Bunch & Mexican Revolution

The only time I was jealous of my wife’s previous boyfriend was that he took her to the theatrical release of The Wind and The Lion.

Most USN landing parties went ashore in undress whites. What price glory often has excellent sets of this uniform, San Francisco Hat makes a correct pre 1922 white hat.

At the time of the Vera Cruz occupation, the sailors mostly wore undress whites but due to the latest uniform regulations (1913 regs, I think) they had a smaller rounded collar, instead of the squared off flap at the back of the collar. Only the undress white uniform was affected by this change, and in just a few years it was changed back. Photos from Vera Cruz show a mix with mostly the small collar, but a few of the old style.

https://sanfranciscohat.com/campobello-white/   FDRs favorite.  A USN white hat he picked up during his stint as Asst SecNav during WW1.  All the reinactors aboard the Olympia wear these.

And yes, Gilligan wore one of these.  Lord knows where he got it.

WPG also has the blue jumper uniform as well, but for what you want to do I think you'ld be better off with the whites.  Easier to take care of, and you'll be glad of the cotton in a Nebraska summer.
