Yet Another Old Holster...
« on: February 21, 2021, 09:33:17 PM »
      Greetings, All!

This Holster accompanied an early Colt's 1877 .41C that I had picked up about thirty years ago. Designed to be worn either on the belt, or inside the waistband. It appears to have been made from another holster, is lightly tooled, and is lined with what looks like chamois. It is rather thin and light, and I would guess that it was originally somewhat softer, like our modern inside the waistband holsters, but much thinner leather. The spring / clip is about .025" in thickness.

That is mighty cool. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Do you have a close-up of the stamping between the floral stamps?

Thanks, MTM. That's an interesting pattern. It has a nice, almost braided look to it.

      Greetings, MWW!

The rosettes are much more pronounced ( later? ) than the border; sorry I wasn't able to get better resolution... Glad you're all finding value in these photos. I felt that someone might want to copy this one!
A Colt's 1862 Pocket Police carried in the CW has been passed down through the Family; included with it are a Powder Flask, and a decomposing holster that is, more or less, intact. I'll post a photo of it soon.

I was thinking to myself the rosettes appear to be superimposed over the boarder
In the close up it looks like the boarder is under or over stamped by the rosettes.

I'm fascinated by old holsters particularly with their accompanying firearm.

I did not know or set out to collect old leather, it kinda morphed into my collections.
I have an old US issue Gaylord 1860 holster that was with the gun, it is all but relic , to weak to handle.
The toe plug is missing, and the last 1" or so it almost separated from the body.

Then came others much later designs with their accompanying guns
all are WW1 or WWII bring backs, only the G. Gaylord from before 1900

      Greetings, M2!

Same here! I've got a large Bank Bag FULL of leather that I began accumulating, mostly discards from a Gun Shop that I worked at, or Gun Show bargains. Now, I have Dads / Family holsters & leather goods, going much farther back. A Hobby within a Hobby...!

My LGS has been a gold mine too... I've gotten two vintage Police duty holsters there.

One was Bauer Brothers service holster with the Colt New Police 38 this officer wore in the 1930's .
The other was $5 bargain basket find 1950's Jay-Pee Service holster for a Police Positive

Thanks for the holster photos, guys.

This is the only classic I have. It has been modified from the original along the top to lower the trigger guard area. I got this one at a match 'yard sale' for $5. One of these days I'll make a replica of it as it would look before any modification. The toe plug is intact and the leather is not rotted although certainly worn. It would fit an early Colt Police Special nicely so it's probably early 20th century. It's similar to one my dad had for his.

Thanks, Major.

Yes, it is a cool topic. It's hard to be a leather worker and not get interested in the classic pieces eventually.

Hi Marshall

The maker used two sizes of Meander stamp on the border and on the strap didn't they?  I could do that then.  I need to get a couple more from Barry King...

I don't think there are two sizes of meander on the holster. It looks smaller around the toe but only because of the angle you are looking at it in the photo. One thing I like about it is that the meander goes around the skirt, too.

Here is little cool one, ( not mine )

It came with a little 25 ACP WW II bring back .  I'm doing some preservation on the Gun for the owner.

Cool. I've made a firing pin out of a drill shank before. It works great, doesn't it?
