ammo/ reloading supplies pricing
« on: January 11, 2021, 08:43:33 AM »
I have been using CCI large rifle match primers since I developed my load 15? years ago.
I've been looking for more primers for about a year, getting desperate, I turned to
gunbroker last night. I put in a (crazy) bid of $151. They ended up going for $241 plus
$20 shipping. Thats over26 cents each!!!!. Then the other day I had looked for 56/50
brass, Midway had it for $99 for 100 pcs. I decided to order it after the first of the year
and now it's $149 for 100 pcs. I have 60 primers left for my Sharps and then a few odds
and ends of other brands, so I don't think I will even have enough to do my usual shoots.
So how can we ever get new shooters with this state of affairs?

I fear we are nearing the end of CAS.  Old farts like me can't afford the ammo for a weekend of shooting (I have not fired a gun since August).  Some of us will die off, others will drift away (never to return) to other hobbies.  For a FNG to start CAS cost $3,000 for four guns, clothes and ammo.  That is hard to justify for unemployed people. With COVID21  coming soon, I do not see the situation getting better.  But, then, I have never been accused of being the sharpest knife on the bus, so maybe others will have good ideas.
Scouts Out!

I have enough ammo already loaded to get the 2 of us through this upcoming season, but I sure do not have enough to be able to furnish new shooters.

I refuse to pay outlandish prices for primers, and I will not honor the scalpers by shopping on GB.

Current situations are just another nail in the coffin for CAS
The latest in a series of events, component shortages , Scalper pricing, Covid restrictions
which are seriously harming the future of the hobby.

I got caught without primers in 1992, so I have kept a fair supply on hand ever since.

TJ, that was before I got into shooting.  Was it a political situation causing a shortage or ???

I was floored last weekend... I went to my first gun auction... I was so excited... there were all kinds of goodies including a krag.  I patiently waited, but everything modern was going for more than new prices.  Heritage 22 went for 175 auction price, plus buyers premium.  I took the krag up over what I wanted to, forgetting the premium and still lost it... about $1200 after all the taxes and fees (probably not horrible, but over gb pricing to be sure)... the listing of single actions has seriously dwindled on gb as well... the ammo at the auction was even more outrageous... I didn't stick around to see what it finished for, because before bidding opened live, online prices had sent it over reasonable prices. 500 rounds of loose 22 were over $30 before the auctioneer started barking.  I love a good deal, but there were none to be had.  Components and dies are outrageous too.  Bullet molds are selling for triple what they should.

I suppose we could be excited that so many are taking up the hobby... now we just need to recruit them to come play!

John,  right now is definitely NOT the right time to get into reloading or "high volume" shooting sports unless you have really deep pockets.  The last primer shortage I remember (10 years ago?) I thought $80 a brick for primers was outrageous, but $300 now? (f#ck the scalpers!) Hopefully things will calm down but who knows for sure.

I am not sure, I was at the Sergeants Major Academy at Ft Bliss at the time.  92 was about the time Clinton was running.   I just remember primers were not to be found.

If somebody is buying a brick for $300.00, I'll sell them one . . .

RCJ,  I figured you for the type of person that would GIVE a fellar a brick if he was desperate enough to pay $300 for one!

RCJ, I think you would get it off gunbroker. It's freakin nuts.
Don't know what the SASS shooters that shoot 4 guns every
weekend are going to do. At least we can shoot only 2 guns.

You're right of course, Broken Nose.
I would give it to 'em good!

BUT, all my bricks are small pistol primers.

Well golly gee whiz. If 1,000 primers are worth $300, what are my spent primers worth?

BTB if ya ever get to Tombstone again I could sell you some of those CCI BR-2 primers. I paid about $6 per hundred. I would let you have 3-400 for what I paid.

I have about 700 large & small pistol primers, need to inventory my loaded ammo before I start reloading, but will definitely be loading 38/40 BP for my S&W Frontier DA.

 >:(  ATTENTION   >:(

Contrary to popular MYTH, the current shortages are temporary.  The current BOON in gun buying is FEAR.  Not the fear of any political party, but the FEAR of the WACKO's running around to events, any events, Displaying their Assault Rifles with an intent to intimidate.

Patience.  It may well take a few months, but supply will catch up with demand.  PANIC is the absolute worst thing to do.  Panic and FEAR generate hoarding.

Stay Safe.

I've had 2 friends, no VERY GOOD friends offer to sell me a few hundred
of the CCI match primers at fair, normal prices. That will get me through
for a couple years. We have very good people   Thanks

Bear tooth, we know some good people.   A good friend has sold me large rifle primers for what he paid for them.   Says he won't be that guy that price gouges.   I should have enough large rifle to load 45-70 for the year.   Now if i just had a friend who loaded with large pistol primers.   ;D
