 51 Navy
all are neat guns .... buy the Navy first ...

More specific:

51 Navy >  6 shot- 36 Caliber .... 38 conversion possible   ( can be had in 44 Cal, version of the gun that never was )
Easy to find in stock , least likely to have timing issue fresh from the box .

1849 pocket colt , a baby dragoon  >  5 shot -  31 cal.  ( conversions have existed to 32 cal. but are rare to find and almost guaranteed to be a timing hassle in doing so  )

Not to mention a 51 Navy can be had on sale ...time to time

I've have & had all of them  , and to someone new (assuming you are ) ,  I suggest the 51 Navy

If I may make a suggestion.
Oklahoma Tom, a fine Pard, will be the one to root out the best deal.

Hopefully you are aware a Second Generation Colt "anything" is actually a Uberti with "Colt" markings.

:)  Ah Well ky medic ;)

Allow me to explain.  There was a fire at Colt way back when.  ALL the machines and tooling for Colt Percussion guns was destroyed.  Colt actually NEVER replaced any of those machines nor tooling.  Colt sourced ALL of the parts for the second generation series of guns from Uberti.  Some major casting were provided "in the white" and were completed here.  NOT by Colt.  Third party work by a fellow by the name of Imperato in his at that time small factory.  Third generation guns were also provided by Uberti and were again final assembled by Imperato.  Same folk now are Henry Repeating Arms.

Mike Beleview is a really good guy.  Please understand, Mike is not the "Be All - End All" of information he would like some to think he is.  I just don't remember the name of Gun Maker Factory he owned when the Second Generation of guns were completed.  Look up the actual history.

You will also find the Second Generation and Third Generation "Colt" percussion guns suffer the same basic failing of ALL Uberti built Open Top guns.  The Barrel to Arbor fit is atrocious.  As an additional, Colt will NOT letter Third Generation guns.

Good luck with yours.  With some judicious set-up work they can be really fun guns.

Iver Johnson

Iver Johnson's Arms & Cycle Works is a company that originally started in 1891 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
It was purchased  in 1973 by Louis Imperato, move to Brooklyn , and then New Jersey.

As ,correctly stated  2nd Gens were assembled from Uberti parts imported unfinished. The finished guns were inspected at Colt.
Colt will letter the C series guns

Gen 3 guns were assembled from guns imported in the white both at Brooklyn & NJ , and Colt was not involved other than their Logo association, they do not letter them.

Louis Imperato  sold the Iver Johnson brand to a group of investors in Jacksonville, Arkansas  in 1982.
Where they produced a  copy of the US M1 Carbine.

After Bankruptcy  Iver Johnson, trademark, and other rights were acquired by a Rockledge, Florida based company that is using the Iver Johnson name and Owl  logo since 2006.
They are primarily an import company of Philippine made 1911's.

True.  A new Cimarron '49 is $389.  If I was in the market for a new one, I'd pay an extra $11 for Colt's name on the barrel.  :)

You didn't get hurt... ky-medic

BTW ...to extend the 3rd Gen. story a bit ....
When the 3rd Gen.  aka Gray box Signature Series were discontinued in 1982-3

The remaining Colt Address roll engraved barrels still in Gardone,  were produced down the alley @ Armi San Marco.

There they were finished as new guns , and imported .... COLT slapped a Cease And Desist injunction on the importers with a pending Law Suit for brand infringement....  any remaining barrels were shaved of the address.

Guns turn up from time to time on the secondary market.... I've seen two Walkers turn up

Just in case anyone is looking LG Outdoors has about thirty 5" barrel .36 calibre 1851 Navys in stock (Taylors brand made by Uberti). Their website or gunbroker.
Or the LG Outdoors alternate named site: Wholesale Hunter, (they are the same outfit in Wetumca, Alabama).

These Sheriff length .36 Navy's are hard to find retail new... $305
