Great article about a guy in Texas killing a bear inside his cabin in the middle of the night with an Uberti 1866 in .45 Colt.  I guess it is still a viable defense against preditors big and small.

So, what is the real story? The guy and and his wife are 'from' Texas but the headline says killed in Colorado. Now, by my reckoning that would be one hellva shot from Conroe, TX to a 400 square foot cabin in Colorado. Not to mention he hit the bear 8 times. Fine shooting pard.

I am wondering what ammo he used.  Cow boy, light loads? RNHP? Hard ball?

LOL!

"Williams and his wife reside in Conroe, Texas, but spend their summers at the 400 square-foot cabin. "

"Williams shot several more times and could see the bear was still moving. After reloading, Stephanie handed Williams a flashlight,
and he put a final round into the bear, ending the confrontation."

Shoulda had a flashlight strapped to the barrel in the first place. Even duck tape works well!

"Although shaken by the incident, the couple is back living in the cabin, now replete with bars on the windows and a reinforced door."

Shoulda put in a 2" plus solid wood door, or a steel fire door, and barred the windows a long time ago.

Out here in the Great Southwest, living on the side of a mountain, we find ourselves interspersed with "county open space", state forest,
national forest, and some state & national parks. As a result, encounters with bears, coyotes, cougers, bobcats, deer, rattlesnakes, etc etc
are daily affairs - quite common and most folks who step outside into the outdoors will carry something more lethal than a paperback book.
Most folks also have "bear gates" on their doors, and barred windows if needed.

Most of us also keep a 12 ga with a flashlight attached, loaded with #4 buck or 00 buck.

Last time a local had to call the sheriff it was a Granny who opened the door and a bear came in after her pies. Unfortunately, her shotgun was
behind the door so she retreated to the BR and called the Sherriff's office from there. The Bear became quite recalcitrant and had to be
put down. The county  Issue 9mm worked fine.

But  most encounters are resolved by the wives banging pans and hollering "no no, bad critter".

except for the snakes. they get relocated so as to keep the rodents under control ... unless they get run over :-(

Hi
Due to an interesting set of gates in Scotland with a Bear on each brick post, finding fan actual gate to keep bears out is sort of tough.  The Bear Gate is locked until another Stuart takes the throne in England.  I did find a lot of data in an electric fence for the house.   I bet that makes Halloween fun.
