Mauser Safety question
« on: April 07, 2020, 03:32:13 PM »
I'm having an issue with my Spanish Mauser , the safety lever will not turn, it seems to be locked in the off position.
It will not turn vertical or beyond to the right.
The photo is the bolt as it is presently.

Anyone have any ideas

Without looking at it, it sounds like the detent is jammed up for some reason.  Can you depress it with a small screw driver?

I have not used tools , I have jiggled the safety , pushed and pulled the cocking piece( actually to smooth and slick to get a purchase to pull short of some plyers or something ) which I don't want to try fearing marring.

this video describes the issue its a later action but basically the same as my 1893/1916

Should be a spring detent on the safety that you can push in with a small screw driver.  Shouldn't mar a thing.  As far as the cocking piece, you can try using Vise Grips padded with leather.

I've had the same problem with a couple of my guns little Kroil and like Ned said a small tip screwdriver fix both of mine. The trouble is most of them do not get used so they freeze up and The dimple for the detent pin is deeper in safe position versus fire. Good luck.

You have my attention ...I take it the detent is under the safety ?
I haven't disassembled the bolt yet , I have had it out for a closer look.
But the safety needs to be in the center position for disassembly and it will not turn.

I have ordered replacement safety,  should be here Mon or Tues. and I'll proceed.

mean while I'll try the Kroil ...

DoH ...Ok so the video I posted is a 98 Mauser very similar in function to the 93 ( mine ) but not exactly.

So the issue the safety would not turn , but as it turns out if I put downward thumb pressure toward the wrist ( not pull back ) on the cocking piece

and viola ...safety engaged  woo hoo !   Now I could disassemble the bolt  and did ...found it pretty gunky in cosmoline.

after a good cleaning , I discover the shaft on my safety is galled note: photo

It should look like the one I ordered below
when it arrives I will install and I believe that minute of play in mine gone, will solve my problem

Thanks fella's you guy's helped me  in that I took a closer look  :)

Is that corrosion on the safety shaft?  Don't know how else it would get galled.  The rest of the bolt looks immaculate.

I think sand or mud ...the rest of the bolt is very nice ..no rust anywhere

course it may not be the original safety  :-\

The new (to me ) replacement safety was the bomb solved the problem.
as bonus ...my old safety was polished the ss# scrubbed

The new replacement has about 70% original blue and as a lucky coincidence the 84 matches my bolts last two numbers

Seeing the condition of the rest of the bolt, my guess is the safety is NOT original.
