@ home on the range
« on: April 04, 2020, 07:05:14 AM »
On another front awhile back I built my own Shooting galley and bullet test area ( I had not foreseen the current unpleasantness )

So it is doubly cool to have place to shoot while the range is closed.
...the two orange V's are bullet traps on which cardboard targets are hung.
I use these for my handloaded Milsurp 303 308 30/40 30/06 with Tail Boss & lead plinking loads

Very nice and well designed! This should make it a little easier to stay home.

Great place to test your reloads.  Wish I had one.

I look forward to visiting you someday when the current situation is over with.

Here is video by Hickok 45 on steel

I'll point out my orange V targets are 3/8" 24x24"  AR 500 and are design as bullet stops the actual target is hung front the bar across the top

My yellow 24" X 24" are angled 15% and are also AR500  the swingers aces & 8s are 1/4 AR 500 and pistol or pistol cal. rifle only

Super Duper Play Yard Major 2.  Wish it twaz mine.  Unfortunately, my "Neck of the Woods" is in the middle of an Urban Neighborhood and even the firing of Guns within the Borough is illegal.  Of course, two streets over is out of the Borough and a couple of folks shoot in a regular bases.  Go Figure.

I especially like those "Traps."  Special Nice.  Drool

Wonderful setup My Good Major!

May I ask what is "behind" the target area?
If it were mine I would be thinking hard of building up a timber & dirt berm, as I have had occasional instances
of critters blissfully wandering into the downrange area....

Well you might ask Sir, behind is acreage,  flat acreage at that, so yes the plan is or was a dirt berm. However, slacked RR ties have found my favor.

I'm waiting on their delivery and back it up with the berm

This video will help with a better understanding

My design (below) is actually quite a bit larger @  24"x 24" x 24"  of 3/8" AR 500  and my pipe is 3/8 wall.
Both were built in my job 20 shop.

that said , I will not shoot .223 rounds, or high velocity rounds (factory loads)

I do shoot 30 cal Rifles loaded with  70% -80% Traid Boss and Lead ( some is Hi Tech coated ) pushing about 1250 fps +or-
these are contained with no damage to the trap.

Of course pistol cal. Rifle and pistols rounds are also contained....I do not shoot Magnum loads

Uber KOOL Major 2.  Yours be a smidge larger than the sample example in the video but I like yours a lot better.  A few extra inches can be worth a whole lot.  Of course, here I sit in my quiet urban Neighborhood with prohibitions on firearms (Boo Hisssssss).  Were I on the other hand, located in a more neighborly space, be headed for my local metal smiths.  I would probably also, add a pair of grab handles on the back side.  That's just a thought.  I'd still lug them around the premises with a Radio Flyer Wagon or a Hand Box Truck.  There is an annoying little kid down the street, and I am certain, were I quick, I could snatch the Radio Flyer toot sweet you betcha.

The videographer states his weighs 45 1/2 lbs  portable enough I suppose

mine on the other hand is near twice in size his Dads creation and weighs 156 LBS. , the 2'x2' side plates alone are 63 lbs. each.
note: the wooden pallet one is setting on in the shop , I used a forklift to put it in the Pickup.

at home it took 3 of us and gravity to unload (didn't have the forklift there) they were dragged to the current placement.
They are easy enough to tip/pivot forward, went I want to retrieve lead.
I will add the floor is not dirt but 2 " layer of concrete washout ( free from Concrete delivery Co.s ) it packs down but does not harden.

I use  16" x 16" corrugated carboard for paper targets and these urethane 1/2" thick Evil Manny
and/or 1" thick black version I call Fat Manny. These are cut on the shop CNC and measure 12 X 16" approx. for both thicknesses.
I think I get 21 per 4x8 sheet of urethane.
The cost is $124 a sheet of 1/2 inch or about $5.90 each.

Thank you for the kudo's

M-2, what condition is the recovered lead from that? Big chunks, or splatter/dust?

I seem to get about 40% in med chunks ( more if the bullet was jacketed 9MM etc. ) nothing original  bullet size
I can see dust on impact

I have not mined for lead spatter as yet , I've looked and retrieved the med pieces
