Recently purchased Spencer
« on: March 02, 2020, 07:11:59 PM »
I recently purchased an original spencer carbine from a friend.  Serial is 1229.  There are no other marks except the serial # matching on the receiver and barrel.  Lurking on this site I would guess it started as a rifle due to the muzzle exterior diameter measuring .823".  It is in very good shape, and rifling is pitted but all there.  With regard to the disclaimers on serial numbers in mind I'd be greatly appreciative of any information.  Thanks.

George,

Regarding your Spencer Carbine serial # 1229   . . .   best "guestimate" is your Spencer Carbine MAY HAVE BEEN issued to Company C, 19th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry in 1864 - no day or month listed.  And I know you read my disclaimer.  Hope this info helps.

Many thanks.  Good to know it was possibly involved during the civil war with my home state troops.  At least 2 of my ancestors served from western Pennsylvania, both ground pounders though.   Please excuse the length it took to reply.  We were traveling out of the country.  (Hopefully remaining in good health at this time.) All reenactments in Florida, where I live have been postponed so it may be a while before I carry it with Second Florida Cavalry.  I have fired the plastic blanks successfully.  I have both the original and a center fire repro block for it.
Again thanks and I'll continue to lurk unless I have more to contribute.
