Hello Forum,
I own a 1876 rifle in .45-60. I have the opportunity to get the bottom of the carrier block engraved with the caliber, just like on my 1873 rifle. The question I have is, were the original Winchester 1876 rifles engraved with the caliber mark? I do have Madis's book, but a quick look showed no photo of the base of the carrier block.
Thanks,
Rabbit

Yes, the carrier block was normally engraved with the caliber.  My Uberti 1876 carbine came with a (lightly) engraved carrier block somewhat reminiscent of the originals.  Here is a photo of an original from James Julia Auctions.

I'm not positive, but is it possible that the carriers for the original caliber, 45-75, were not engraved, and then started being engraved when new calibers were added?  Similar to '73 carriers only being engraved if other than the original 44-40 ?  My Pirkle Winchester book would say, but it is 100 mi. away.

Abilene is correct.  The ..45-75 W.C.F. was the first to be introduced of the four 1876 calibers.  All carrier blocks and barrels, were void of caliber markings until the introduction of  the .50-95 Express in March of 1879.  At that time, all 1876 carbines, rifles and muskets had calibers markings on both the carrier block and the barrel.  The 1873 models were also unmarked for caliber until approximately serial number 51,000, when the .38-40 cartridge was introduced.  An interesting side note, most people don't consider.  The .44-40 (.44 W.C.F.) cartridge was the first center fire caliber developed and introduced by Winchester in 1873.  The .45-75 W.C.F.  was the second caliber developed and introduced by Winchester in 1876.
