Grip changes on 1-3 gen colt saa?
« on: July 02, 2019, 09:12:35 PM »
Seen a Colt 1st. gen SAA and the butt/bottom of the grip frame was upswept to where if you set the gun butt down on a table the barrel would be pointed up at more of an angle than most every other Colt SAA I have seen where the barrel would be almost level with the table in the same position. So the question,,How much did the grip shape change through the years ?

I would say that there are subtle changes over the generations, but the overall silhouette (side) view is pretty much the same angles.

PLUS ONE too Abilene.  There were various small differences in the SAA grip frames throughout production.  Far, far too many to actually list.  I would also point out, there were/are differences between production guns, of the same time period that are consecutively numbered.  Almost without exception, while the frames may well bolt up. No two sets of grips will interchange.  The grips are/were actually "fit" when the gun was "in the white" and are fit to a specific gun.  SO:

The short answer to your question is ..... TA DA:  A lot yet not much.

I seen that thread,,,But it doesn't give a whole lot of info on grip shape...Been looking at a lot of SAA on the internet  and I noticed some guns made between 1874 and 1875 have the upswept grip..But not all of them????..
