Two quick, pilgrim questions
« on: June 22, 2019, 11:17:11 AM »
I just found out about the Cracker Cowboy posse here in FL.  I have two questions about NCOWS:
1.  Are Ghost ring rifle sights allowed?  I can not find anything on how far back they date.
2.  For my first shoot, can I wear plane, brown, square toe boots with straps, if I wear my pants low to cover the straps?
I am good on all the other requirements.
Thanks or your time.

Howdy Jeremiah,

Welcome to NCOWS.

I'm a Florida resident also. We just moved to Sun City Center in Florida last November.

Sent you a PM.

Since NCOWS is more aligned with actual history, I doubt that modern Ghost Ring rifle sights would qualify. Rear Peep sights DO go back all the to crossbows, and I would bet five donuts that swapping in a Full Buckhorn rear sight would be dandy.
And The Full Buckhorn as seen here go back to flintlocks and actually work like forward mounted ghost rings

Welcome Jeremiah!!!   The ghost ring sight will not be legal, but remember
new members have 1 year to get their clothes and equipment up to NCOWS
rules. The 2 local pards that responded, I know both personally and will be                                   tremendously helpful I am sure. Prepare to take a trip back to the old
west,it's a blast.

Howdy all,

I don't really know NCOWS rules, but I believe that Lyman introduced a tang (peep) sight in 1878. Based on my limited SASS experience a buckhorn or middle sight is actually faster than a tang sight. The Tang sight is good to have for long range shooting.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and good information.  I have a buckhorn sight on my "Hawken" black powder, deer rifle.  So I ordered one for my Rossi M 92 from Steve's Gunz.  I will be joining NCOWS later today.  I'll take advantage of the 1st year grace period on the boots.  Everything else will be period.

FWIW: I did ACW reenactment while stationed at Ft. Knox and Fur trade era while stationed at St. Louis.

My Good

Your boots "might" work ... The toe of western boots was originally rounded or squared in shape. The narrow pointed toe design appeared in the early 1940s.
If your boots are like these:

check with the NCOWS folks to see if cutting the straps off will suffice.
