Howdy,
Here is the result of the Merwin Barrel repair. It survived the smoke test. In fact it shoots pretty well for an old gun with a
bad crown. I am undecided as to how much to clean it. Still need to reshape the hammer spur.

Does anyone know what the small threaded hole (black spot) about 3/4 in. above the trigger guard retaining screw is for?

Nada Clue. Of course, I'm not a M-H guy. As far as cleaning, I "personally" should only clean and polish where parts move together and are not readily visible. Polish the lock works, Cylinder Chambers, Perhaps the cylinder face, the breach end of the barrel, though not enough polishing to mess with the Barrel to Cylinder gap. And of course the Arbor. Just a light wipedown with some oil (Mobil 1) on the rest of the gun.

I might be able to tell you, but am not sure which hole you're referring to.
All the threaded holes on my double-action have something screwed into them.
Could you provide a photo?

I believe the screw hole you are asking about is, The Coil Trigger Return Spring & Set Screw.

Hi,
There is a picture posted on this thread captioned Merwin Finished.
This is not the hole in front of the trigger guard but is on the grip frame about half way between the trigger guard and the hammer. The gun functions with out any screw in the hole. It may be a hole for oiling.
So far as cleaning, I was wondering about polishing the areas that are black .

My third model double-action does not have a through hole like that. I looked at Chicoine's Gunsmithing book, and he has photos of second model single-actions with the end of a screw (or pin) at that location. So at least some of the large frames had something there.

I know there is an internal flat spring that tensions the loading gate and that is held by a screw inside the "hammer area," but don't recall exactly where the screw is. That's the only thing that comes to mind, but I will see if I can look at a couple other Merwins this weekend and perhaps get a better idea.

Thanks for the tip. You are right that there is an internal spring to hold the loading gate up. I see how it works now. I have the spring but I will have to make the screw.
