*** Photos Added *** Antique Spencer sporter
« on: April 02, 2019, 06:39:29 PM »
Hello everybody! After much poking and prodding, I finally bought my first Spencer. It's a Sporter model with a 30" barrel. Serial number is 1662 and is directly on top, not to the side. Using a set of calipers, the bore measures out for a .56 caliber bullet. Wondering if anybody has any info. Thanks!

From Mr. Roy Marcot...

From your clear pictures I believe that you have a Spencer Model 1860 Navy Rifle which had its forearm shortened and a gunsmith-applied pewter nose cap applied.  The newly-applied front sight is not factory.

The barrel appears original. The bore should measure about 0.54 caliber, intended for .56-56 Spencer rimfire ammunition.

Hello:

Thanks, Jim for responding:

Perhaps Mr. Marcot will know which rifling equipment was used on Spencers.

An experienced collector/dealer, David Stavlo at Lodgewood, looked at these photo's.
He said that the sort of blemishes IN the metal of the receiver are common on sporters and caused the gov't. to reject some otherwise serviceable receivers purely for cosmetic reasons.

Edited 21MAY19 to add "blemish" info. R/JKT
