56-50 Load with Trail Boss
« on: April 02, 2019, 11:48:15 AM »
In my hoard of "Rifle" magazines, I came across an article in the 2008 May-June issue by Mike Venturino entitled "Horse Cavalry Carbines".

He loaded 12 grs of Trail Boss with 315 RNFPs and claimed 1184 fps velocity.

I've shot 8 grs of TB and it was pretty aneamic as a load. 12 grs out to have a little more zip.

Hello, PJ:

Mike "Duke" is a stickler for things like velocity info, so I would accept his figure.
Obviously ambient temp matters.

Just a caveat on that load ....

I just threw some 12 gr Trail Boss charges in 56-50 brass and it will be a slightly compressed load under Accurate 350 gr RNFPs.

It is my understanding that TB is NOT amenable to compression. I'm surprised that MV was not aware of that, or it means that it isn't anything of concern.

You decide ..... :-\

In the meantime, I'll load some with 12 grs and get back to you.

Shot some 56-50 loads with 12 grs of Trail Boss today.  :o

This is a serious load with which I would definitely hunt deer and bear. I believe MLV's recorded velocity.

The rest of the time I shot 8 gr/TB and love it. So does the carbine. Accurate, hard hitting on steel out to 100 yds. For that I sat, my best shooting position.

Our first CAS event is the last Sunday of the month. I'll be shooting the Spencer and a new pair of 7-1/2" 44-40s.
