Adding an inspectors cartouche
« on: March 28, 2019, 12:43:43 PM »
I have always wanted to dress my reproduction Spencer Rifle and Carbine (Both Chiappa's) with some period looking inspector cartouches... It would look cool and add some character to the gun. Has anyone ever done that? I see repro Colt and Smith Revolvers so marked but not a Spencer .. Not yet.

Hi Cannonman1,

Here are some samples of Inspector Cartouches . . . maybe you can make your own   :o

However, some people might question the "legality" of doing it . . . but since it's an Armi Sport model not sure that it would matter   ::) ::)

On the guns I build, mostly Civil War period Military types, I want them to be as historically authentic as possible.
I chose a cartouche as much like those commonly seen on original firearms. These can vary greatly but a common type is a rectangular box with rounded corners, about 1/2" long by 1/4" wide, with the Inspectors initials in script letters inside the box.
I chose my own initials (BJT) to stamp the stock in the correct location for that firearm.
This is just a method I chose to use for the arms I built.
My best,

You aren't the only one, Blair:

I have had several exact copies of CW vintage guns and accoutrements that were stamped with cartouches or marks where they would be on originals, BUT they clearly and unalterably included the maker's name and full year so that they would NOT be confused with originals.  These artists were very concerned that their modern work should not be passed off otherwise.

Kevin
