How does Uberti/Taylor 1851 Navy Conversion handle BP?
« on: March 13, 2019, 11:51:25 PM »
Any jamming problems I should know about?  Or other problems?  If I get one it will be to shoot with .38 Long Colt reloads with black powder to be more authentic rather than .38 Spl.

I just wouldn’t want to spend money on it and find any surprises because the cylinder is too long compared to originals in .38 Short/Long Colt

All open top / Colt pattern revolvers handle BP fouling exceptionally well.
Civilize them with a Krag . . .

TShe .38 Spcl open tops will handle .38SC and .38LC just fine.  It may have problems chambering .38 S&W and .38 Colt New Police.

The big advantage of using the short and long Colt cases is less powder to achieve a full case.  As long as you achieve the minimum power factor with the bullet you are using, you are good to go.

I have a Uberti made RM Conversion chambered in 38 Spec that handles black powder fine. Shoot Snakebite cast bullets and use FFF Goex. I bought it through Taylors, but the Cimarron issued ones are no different. Only difference basically is the barrel, octogan vs round. The 51 Conversion shouldn't have any other problems any other conversion has had that can't be rectified, ie arbor fit, minor timing if needed. As FriscoCountry posted "The 38 Spec open tops will handle 38SC and 38LC just fine". Any jamming will depend on luck of the draw as in any percussion/conversion on the market. Most run fine out of the box, but a few once in a while need some timing work that isn't hard to fix.

Gus, does your ASM have the removable gas ring in front of the cylinder?  I seem to recall hearing long ago that those had problems with BP.
