New Spencer Has Arrived ... !!!
« on: February 12, 2019, 06:18:21 PM »
The Spencer arrived today and I could not be more pleased with it ....  ;D! After all the negative I've heard about them, it has exceeded my expectations. It came in a nice lockable plastic case with "Armi Sport Spencer Carbine" emblazoned on it.

The case colours in the receiver and hammer are bright and well mottled, not splotchy, dark attractive wood with good grain, the bluing excellent, wood to metal fit excellent and even an acceptable trigger pull!

My dummy rds cycle just fine and even eject whereas empty cases need a flick to clear the action. My dummies have spent primers and the hits are dead centre, striking in the original hit.

Until I cast some Accurate 51-350S bullets, the only loaded rds I have are too long to cycle so will be shot single loaded.

I am one happy Trooper ....  :D

I was sweating it too! All I ever heard about them was not encouraging.

I've only seen and handled (but not shot) two other Spencer repros, one in .45 Colt, t'other in 56-50. Mine looks better than either of them.
The 56-50 was shipped direct from Italy, ordered by a pal's wife when she couldn't find one in Canada as an anniversary present for him. This broke with protocol as they don't normally do individual sales. Shows the romantic side of Italians!

One thing puzzles me tho' .... since the carbine was intended to be carried on a sling across the Troopers's body, what is the purpose of the very nicely inletted butt swivel ...  ???

My wife ruled out sleeping with the Spencer ....

One of my three dummy rds hangs up occasionally. I'll mike them and report back.

But - why come the butt swivel on a carbine with no front swivel ....  ???

I'm hoping that someone who knows will chime in, but here are the explanations that I've heard.  The more likely (to me) explanation is that there was a leather attachment for the front of a sling and the rear was connected to the rear swivel.  I have certainly seen photos of slings set up like that.  The other explanation is that there was a sling arrangement that went through the rear swivel, then to the ring on the side.

Like I said, I don't know and I'm hoping for a definitive answer.

The standard Rifle Musket sling standing or stationary loop could be made or modified to fit over the muzzle end and front sight of the Carbine. The sliding loop could then be put on, and the hook end of sling be threaded through the buttstock swivel and hooked into the adjustment holes on the sling. The sliding loop could be slid into place at the place at the buttstock swivel to hold it all together.
I hope this helps.
My best,

That sounds like the answer. Are there any pics of this arrangement in place?

PJ,

I believe Two Flints has at least one from Marcot's book.

Two Flints,

Yes that is the one!
I had forgotten about the small buckle on the standing loop end.
I built one like this for my Carbine, but my buckle was not quit as small, and there is no leather sliding keeper on the buttstock end of this image.  Thanks so much again.

Truly, a picture is worth a thousand words!

I can fab up one of those. I long ago learned that hunting requires a sling not so much for shooting as ease of carry.

"From Russia With Love ...." ....  :-*

Why not the Moisin sling with the little leather loops and buckles like the Spencer sling?
