Does the Lee 429-200 RF bullet work in the 1873?
« on: April 01, 2019, 09:04:22 AM »
Happen to have this mold on hand, and thinking about getting a Uberti 73 in .44 WCF. Is the crimp groove in the right place for an overall length that feeds well?
I have heard the RCBS .44-200 FN 595 is the gold standard in .44 WCF.

That LEE boolit works fine in my Uberti 1866 - so does the RCBS 595
I have the 40-180-CM-635 mold for my 38-40 (thats in the RCBS cowboy section )
also like the look of the RCBS 44-200-CM-636 for the 44/40 - have a couple mates use it - but I have not shot it myself.
If yr shooting blackpowder you might need a boolit with more lube than the LEE - tho it has worked ok for me.

I've used Lee, Lyman and RCBS molds, but I'm totally sold on a couple of offerings from Accurate Molds, especially one designed by the late Jack Kort (43-215C). I urge you to consider investing in one of those molds. The bullets work very well in all five of my 44 WCF guns. A quick search here will yield volumes of information. In fact, read the top sticky thread in this forum and you'll read about Jack's journey with my all-time favorite cartridge. He was a fantastic man and a wealth of information.

Griff, I, too, appreciated our late friend John Kort and was so sorry when he lost his fight with the Big C.
As Greyhawk mentioned, my concern with the inexpensive Lee mold is the inability to carry adequate lube when shooting BP loads in a 24-inch barrel.
I will go back and reread John's posts. I have a couple of Accurate molds and they are simply wonderful.

I haven't tried the Lee design with BP, but I'm skeptical that it would carry enough lube.  I felt that, while it worked for smokeless, it barely had enough lube.  The grease grooves are very shallow.  In its favor, or course, is the low cost.  That means that you could always give it a shot (or a number of shots  ;)) without risking too much.  The Accurate design was specifically developed for BP and carries lots of lube.

Of all of them I like the look of the LEE boolit best in loaded rounds - the closest "look" to what I remember from original winchester molds. (edit - Dicks Mav D looks near identical loaded - but I worry about the length and extra weight in MY rifle )
I was highly sceptical of the lube issue but have shot it a few times with black and done ok - my powder burns pretty clean - the uberti barrel is mirror finish and well run in - also a slow twist tube.
If I was ordering from accurate I would send him a LEE boolit and say from the crimp groove forward I want that exact profile - now lets put some lube on this thing as well. (its proly already in his catalog)

While I have the Lee mold on hand, I ordered John Kort's 43-215C from Accurate. Just felt like "the right thing to do."

Well, you know my opinion--I'm a huge fan of that bullet. I suspect that you'll be more than satisfied.
