RCBS 56-50 dies
« on: January 24, 2019, 11:08:40 AM »
Would it surprise anyone to learn that RCBS dies in 56-50 are non-existent in Canada?

I'm looking at $100 CDN plus taxes/shipping and 5-6 weeks waiting.

I found five sets at Graf & Sons at a good price, but - they do not ship across the DMZ unless you are willing to pay the $250 export fee.

So much for 'free trade' ....  :-\

Amazing.  As I mentioned before, Lyman dies did work for me, using the same bullet that you will be using.  The neck tension was non-existent, but I crimped into the crimp groove and it kept the bullet from moving in or out of the case.  Are Lyman dies available to you?

Yes, they are, but I've heard too much negative about them to take a chance.

I may ask a friend to buy me a set in the US and bring them across, legally declaring them. It will be an inconvenience but at least I'll have them.

This Spencer exercise is getting out of hand .....   :o

I've yet to get the carbine and I've invested in an Accurate mould at $117.50 USD  (haven't worked that out in Kanuck Bucks) and 100 cases at $203.84 CDN.

And I don't have dies yet, which are going to be a PITA to get.

This bloody carbine had better be a good one or I'm going to be severely p!ssed .... >:(

If it requires much in the way of remedial work to function, it's going right back in the box to the dealer and someone is going to get a heck of a deal on the package.

Good.  I'm down in Southwest Washington or I'd run over and help you out.  ;D

I used to occasionally shop at Yeager's in Bellingham and Kesselrings at Mt .Vernon.

Kesselrings had issues with the BATF and folded and Yeager's doesn't stock them.

Hello:

I didn't know you had cases.
Remember 100 new Starlines and some of those 350gr Rapine test bullets are sitting at Blaine.

Kevin

I didn't have cases when you made your offer, and I didn't anticipate your generosity ....  :o   MANY thanks!

Looks like I'll have brass for the foreseeable future.

I didn't mention in my earlier post that I still owe $500 in addition to my credit balance on the carbine, payable when the dealer has it.

It has occurred to me that for a little more money I could have had another Shiloh rifle which would have come with no flaws or issues.

"Handloader" magazine once published a list that said - "If you've done any/some/all of these, you might be a "Rifle Looney":

- bought dies, etc. for a rifle that you don't even own -yet.

Looks like I qualify ...  ::)

Just got another shock .....  :o

I always like to have reference books for any arms that I own or fancy, so I looked for a copy of Roy Marcot's book on Spencers.

Good used copies start at $200 USD on Amazon !!!  Really good copies go for over $500 USD.

Bummer ....  :-\

Hi, PJ:

Have an extra new one, so once you are happy with your Spencer, will get it to you.

I'd be most grateful!

But - like you said, better to wait and see what I get and if I can work with it. I've already indulged your generosity and spent money like a drunken Cowboy with not even a a hangover to show for it ...  :-\

I recently culled my library shelves and got rid of a LOT of books on guns and military history I've accumulated over the years, only keeping some essential reference books. I made some of my friends very happy, particularly the young Cowboy we earlier gifted with a complete reloading outfit.

There comes a time when paying it forward means more than hoarding. We're all just custodians of what we "own"and someday it will all belong to someone else.

That's a humbling thought .....  :(

PJ,

Can you buy from Amazon up in Canada?  Please excuse my ignorance by that question, if the answer is an easy, Yes.  I don't understand all the cross border laws.

But here are the RCBS dies on Amazon where I finally bought them ( in early 2018) after having all the issues described for Lyman dies. I bought my rifle in 2005 and lived with poor ammo since.  The RCBS dies did stop those worries.

https://www.amazon.com/RCBS-20104-Steel-Spencer-Ammunition/dp/B0063I6UES/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1548451434&sr=8-2&keywords=rcbs+56%2F50+dies

Hope this can help you.

Yes, Amazon ships across the DMZ.

If you look on the upper right hand of the link you posted, you'll see: "Ships to Canada. Temporarily out of stock." Often they give the price in CDN as well.

This is likely how I'll get my dies.

I'm already overwhelmed by your generosity to the point of embarrassment ...  :-[

If there is ANY thing I can do in return, you need only ask.

Thanks, PJ:

The SSS Moderator and members have been the nicest people, sharing so much information to help others.  "Above all, they are good shipmates."

As for something to do .....

Nothing, friend, more than your smile and photo's + details of your Spencer progress.

Love.

You know we're going to be thought of as having a "bromance" if you make statements like that, don't you?   ;)

Fortunately, those that know us best would not be among them. The rest don't matter. Best way to pay back for what I have received is to pay it forward.

PJ,

My upper right hand corner screen does not show a Canada statement.  But how about this second option from Midway here in Missouri.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0063I6UES/ref=dp_olp_new_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=new

I may not appear as an option on your screen but it is listed as a second option for me in Missouri.

Again - "Temporarily out of stock".

In other words, they have to place an order with RCBS.

I just ordered the most expensive set of dies ever I did .....

Frustrated that I was unable to locate a set of dies this side of the DMZ without a 5-6 week wait (same for the net), I called RCBS direct.
After some conversation, I convinced them to ship a set.

At full retail, they will set me back $74 and change plus $24.50 s&h, plus import duty!

This is getting to be a more expensive proposition than I first envisioned .....  :-\
