"Scots wi' hae wi' Wallace bled ...."
« on: January 26, 2019, 01:55:24 PM »
'Tis that time again to honour the Bard of Scotland.

Our annual Legion Burns Supper is tonight. We missed out last year as they over booked and sold out quickly. This year we made sure we got tickets by applying over a month ago. It's a social highlight and a money maker for the Pipe Band.

"Nae haggis on yer plate laddie, nae beef!"

While I can eat it drenched in gravy and horseradish, Haggis has never been a favourite. But for Rabbie Burns, I can choke it down.
It's made from sheep parts and oatmeal and sheep eat grass, so it's a vegetable, right?

NO!!  Neither is it real food.  Most would consider it FERTILIZER.

Sassenach! Wash your mouth out with single malt Scotch.

Great roast beast, tats, neeps, gravy and of course - HAGGIS! Followed by the Pipes & Drums and lasses dancing.

I was challenged to wear my kilt at our upcoming Valentines' Day pot luck/dessert auction at our community hall. Can't wait to see the reaction of our redneck Cowboy/rancher/logger neighbours ....  :o

I am part of the Cameron Clan. My Dad was born in Scotland, and while I feel a very close affiliation with all things "SCOTS", I cannot honestly say haggis is one of them.
I enjoy sampling and trying most new foods groups I have encountered in my travels around the world (at least those food types that don't try to eat me first), haggis has not been one of those. Mostly because I have never had it offered to me. But, I cannot say I would not give it a good try either.
I don't eat that poor folk southern food "chitlans" (spelling) because they smell like the poo that passed through them while they are cooking. I care not however many times its been cleaned, washed or "slung"!  Haggis would have to pass this poo smell test for me to try it.
My best,

Spent a couple of weeks in Scotland a year ago.   I had Haggis and blood pudding nearly every morning for breakfast.   I like it.  Similar enough to Scrapple and Goetta for me to dive in.   YUM

A workmate of mine was the Drum major for the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band years ago. They competed and won a few times at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

He quit drinking a few years earlier than I did which was unfortunate as he was 'designated driver' when the band toured a series of small single malt distilleries, a host of low output products little known outside of Scotland.

Damn near broke his heart, it did .....  :-[

I would love to be there for the Tattoo.   We had an apartment on the Royal mile for a week.  Edinburgh is not to be missed.   I may be speaking heresy, but I am not a fan of Dot whiskey.  do not enjoy the peat after taste.  Love Irish whiskey.  I love Scottish Ale though.  I kept my thoughts on whiskey to myself and asked for more Haggis.

Single malt whisky is an acquired taste.

I haven't had a drink in over 30 years, but when I see and hear ice cubes being dropped into a crystal glass and Scotch being poured from a crystal decanter, I can smell and taste it!

I love the smell and taste of Drambuie and Glavya, but I remember they produced vicious hangovers ....  :P
