Does anybody know of a source where I can find a 1.75 inch blackened roller buckle ?? Most places only have 1.5 or 2 inch

MikeM,

I don't know where you have checked?
I use a belt and buckle on my every day pants that is 1.5/8 to 1.3/4. But the belt itself is 1.1/2.
The roller buckle is solid brass. I bought it from a harness maker maybe 30 years ago.
Blacking such an item is easy enough. Make sure it is well cleaned and paint it black. This is what was done with iron buckles.
My best,

I have made a number of belts  and holsters,  and always  have to hunt for buckles. Sometimes,  you just have something specific in mind,  and I totally get it.

I buy leather from Zac White,  sometimes a buckle,  but they are limited. Same with Weaver Leather and Tandy. Add BuckleGuy for a bit more selection. I really think you want something hand forged. Got any blacksmiths or knife makers near you?

I've also had good results with Birchwood Casey Super Blue on steel, brass or silver. It's probably a similar formulation. Will try the Black Metal Finish next time I need to turn something black.

Raw Iron... you can find it on old harness leather, and salvage them.
They will be rusty , Horse sweat and elements, but I've found them,
I've had several,  lost a loop of buckles to my barn fire a few years back.

You can get the Chrome plated and have NAPA sand blast ...  but the problem is,  a $2 buckle become $20 buckle with labor & paint  ???

Find an old barn and ask  , there should be old dried/rotted harness hanging ....old barns are a gold mine  :)

MikeM,

Be careful of the bright "silver" colored roller buckles. These maybe iron or brass plated/finished with nickel, chrome or zink.
Most can be burnt off with heat from a propane torch. Be sure to do this out of doors. Some items like zink produce deadly gases. when removed in this way. Too much heat on brass can also melt it. Just a suggestion on my part.

You also said you had access to a 2" wide roller buckle This would seem to be too wide fore a belt only 1.3/4" wide.
I would, however, suggest that width belt would be perfect for a buckle 2" wide.
I hope this info helps.

I may have new ones in raw steel. You can paint them or blue them. If you can find a nickle plated one, check it with a magnet to make sure it is steel underneath, and burn the plating off with a torch.
