Leather guys....is this possible? Who could do it for me?
« on: September 07, 2018, 01:25:06 PM »
I have an old pair of cowboy boots...30+ years old.  They are Texas brand and pretty good boots but they are the shorter-12" or so-style.  I would like to have them taller so I was thinking of having 4-5" of leather added to the tops.  Is this possible?  I would assume that the inner leather would have to get cut back to lap over the new leather to the old.  I would think that getting mule ear pull straps would be good too.

Thanks for any help you can give me on this.

I'd think you could have that done by a custom boot builder or at a good old-style shoe/boot repair shop.

Marshall...thanks for the reply.  So it is something that is doable?  I thought it might be but I got no leather skills.  Around here, trying to find an old school cobbler is about impossible.

Yeah, the hard part is to find a good boot repairman. Isn't there a place in your area where working guys take their boots to get re-soled?

Throw away society. :(  All the old cobblers who used to repair boots are gone.  Heck, 15 years ago the local Meijers super store had a cobbler in it.  Now none to be found around here.  No all the construction workers even wear boots anymore.  Lots of lightweight hikes and tennis shoes.  The factories are here give an allowance for boots so most guys wear them out and buy new.

My wife is going to see her mom Thursday,  there is a western store/tack shop on the way.   Maybe they still do some custom work.  They used to do gunbelts and other CAS stuff years back.

All the shoe repairs guys around where I live are immigrants from Asia, and they generally do good work and are resourceful.

Good luck.  Around 1977, I had that done by a cobbler in Dahlonega GA.  This summer I looked for (and could not find) a cobbler to restitch a pair of Tanker Boots I wore in the 1990s.  As someone above said, we are in a throw away society.
