Brewster Co. Trans Pecos Big Bend .,,,,DT

Ahh.  I actually drove down the eastern edge of Big Bend 15 years ago on the outside of the park to a little empty road that went all the way to the border.  Not a soul around.  Just a cemented off walking bridge and on the Mexican side, an empty desert as far as my eye could see.
The border (Rio Grande) all along there as far west as Langtry and maybe even Del Rio is a deep canyon that can’t be crossed

A Winchester 1892 in .44/40 and a Winchester 1886 in .45-70.

Marston: Are you familiar with the army revolver, Mr. Quigley?
Quigley: Well, sir, I never had much use for one.

Said I never had much use for one.   Never said I didn’t know how to use it.

Considering only what currently resides in my safes, I'd take my USFA 4-3/4" 45 Colt and my Marlin 1895 Cowboy in 45-70.

I'll be just a little different here:  While my sidearm would most certainly be one of my SAAs in .45 Colt, the longarm, well.

If I was thinking of 4 legged critters, it'd be my Sharps Carbine, .50-70.

If 2 legged critters were a concern, despite Leander McNellys approval of the above, it'd be my 1870/87 Vetterli-Vitali TS carbine, with several Vitali clips to feed it.

I don't worry about four-legged predators in my neck of the woods. I would (and have) brought along my Uberti '73 short rifle in 44WCF to protect against the two-legged variety.  When I'm working around in the woods, I often carry my Pietta Frontier 4 3/4" SAA in 44WCF.  Those make a great combination. Frankly, though, it's mostly for nostalgia. If I really am concerned about threats, I take along some boring, modern guns.

If it's got to be what I have in my safe it would be a Uberti "Santa Fe" Hawken .53 caliber caplock rifle and a USFA SAA .45 Colt with 7 1/2" barrel.

That is a tough one...

As others have mentioned, if two legged wolves are a concern then we are talking all modernisnche .... Smith airweight or 1911 or hipower or ...

But for fun, and not feeling underarmed,
I am still waffling betwixt

A) .54 sharps papercutter percussion business rifle + 8” remmy  1858 percussion

Or

2) Remington revolving carbine (with added tang mounted peep sight!) and 5.5” remmy 1858, both .45 cartridge conversions

Version A) is fun if playing pre 1865 buff hunter, and I have almost a dozen brass cartridges for the sharps heheheheh as well as paper
Cartridges for both....

But version 2 is a lot lighter and quicker on the reloads..... and the carbine is very accurate out to 100 yds, and so light you might question the weight of a win 73 ....

And then. I still need a large knife, a small knife, a folding knife, a belt axe or hawk, brass compass, cartridge boxes .....
Oh, and lunch! And a canteen.
And my hat
And vest
And stuff.

And then there is the perennial question: boots , brogues, or moccasins?

Down here?  Most likely be my 45 smoke wagon, with a 100 rounds of ammo.  Rifle?  Only real 4 leg threat is wild dogs or the occasional wild pig, both pretty rare in these parts.  Meth heads, on the other hand.  It'd be a toss up between my 1860 Henry, in 45 Colt, or my 1876 NWMP in 45-75, and about a hundred rounds for the rifle.  Or maybe my Garand with a bandoleer of clips.

I actually have to be Honest and more forthright.  Straight up, here it is.  My personal version of primitive camping is a Holiday Inn Express.  I actually prefer a Hilton Suite.  Simple amenities like an ensuite  Wine Cooler for drinks and a 4K Big Screen.  Oh, and a lobby lever Bar and perhaps a close in Steak House.   8)

With those services in mind, I seldom if ever felt the need to pack in my own food nor set a Camp Fire for warmth.  I haven't encountered any critters in years.  And ..... Room Service.  Marvelous innovation.  I realize how tough it sounds, but somebody has to do it !!  ::)

Packing Iron seems ... so ... superfluous.  Although I do tote a 1911 everywhere I go.  Just for comfort, understand  :D

Valid point, with that in mind, it probably depends on where I'm camping. If it's in my normal neck of the woods, my .45 SAA repro would work. Or my 1851 Navy repro. If it's somewhere with more dangerous wilde life or closer to the bad stretches of our southern border, then I'll stick with my previous answer.

No Boogey man where I camp , we do have black bear and mt. lion but they pose very little danger even when they come around camp , and they do very often . Its the drug cartels and human trafficker's , and the fact that help is hrs. away for the added concern I my case . Picked up trail cam pics of thirteen on my property less than 600yd. from my house two nights ago. Camping in the bend is different than some places.,,,,DT

The OP only suggests, "primitive camping" and "hand loaded BP" rounds for "personal protection", for "individual or family".
Depending on where you may live, and the type of camping you may or may not be use to can account for the many different replies to this post.
I think this post has been fun to watch and read.

A lot of fantasy at work here .....

I'd take my bomb proof Stoeger 'Uplander' 12 ga SxS or my Shiloh 50-70 carbine - or both. They work evwry time.

Can't pack a handgun due to our stupid gun laws. You have to be a criminal to do that.

Too true, Blue, but if you use a long gun, you're slightly better off.

You CAN defend yourself with a gun in Kanuckistan, but it's going to be a very expensive court battle to prove it. Beats the hell out of the alternative where you wish you had blown the bad guy to hell who was on the street before you were.

Lately there have been a couple of court decisions in favour of the shooter who was defending his home and property against unlawful trespass and threat to life. The public is starting to wake up.

Interesting discussion/scenarios.
In my case, I do plan to camp someday at my GG Uncle's Montana homestead site.
Will have my canvas pyramid tent & old tyme camp gear. Likely have an assortment of old firearms on hand.
If only TWO, would be my 71/2" 1873 (440-40) & 1876 (45-60). Add a third item & it would be 1866 Carbine (44-40).
All loaded with black powder.

If my wife makes the trip, I reckon she'll be holed up at the nearest motel  ???
 ;D
