Inspired holster design
« on: February 14, 2018, 03:04:38 PM »
Hello All, it's been a while.  One of the things i enjoy doing is using the pictures in my favorite book "Packing Iron" as inspirations for holster designs.  Let me know if I'm even close.

Looks quite good. That holster inspired me, too.

Hey, are you the Wiley Desperado that used to shoot with the Tejas Caballeros?  Haven't seen you in ages!  Are you still shooting?

Thanks all for the compliments.

Abilene, yep! It's been a while I might dust off those ole six shooters.

Well, I figured that had to be you, because how many Wiley Desperados are there that also do leather work?  I recall you made the stuff you were using years ago and it looked really good!

The Caballeros had to move and are now on property of Judge Menday Coming, between Blanco and Stonewall.  Nice spot that hopefully will be permanent.  But every time this club moves (on their 4th location now) they get a little further from me.  Hope to see you there or somewhere!

Hi

I like the non-Bling version much better.  I might have to copy that one someday.  I somehow doubt that I ever use Conchos at least on my own stuff.

In the cowboy spirite of trying to be helpful I'll pass a little technique along to anyone who is maybe thinking about holster design but doesn't know how to get started.  This technique was passed on to me by a fellow leathercrafter so I hope it will be helpful to someone else.  Using a legal size manila folder draw out your holster design by laying the unloaded gun along the inside fold of the folder.  It will take some practice but manila folders are much cheaper than leather.  You can tape folders toegther for large patterns you'll get it.  After you cut out your pattern you can test it by taping it together and putting the unloaded gun inside.  Unfold it lay it out on the leather and trace it...there ya go!

Those Manila folders are the hot ticket for patterns.
