Chambers with defect?
« on: October 07, 2017, 08:09:55 PM »
Hello:

Recently an experienced Spencer shooter told me that he discovered that the chamber in his repro Spencer rifle has a narrow "break-through" in the  chamber wall opposite the knife blade extractor cut on the outside of the chamber.  The rifle shoots well, but he is concerned.

I spoke to a very experienced Spencer gunsmith who said that he has seen several originals with the same break-through.

If anyone here has knowledge about chamber issues like this in ORIGINALS, please share.

Very respectfully,
El Supremo/Kevin Tinny

I have never looked closely at a repro, but it is very common for an original Spencer with a left-side blade extractor to chip--it usually does so in a vaguely triangular shape.  The chip is at about the strongest part of the cartridge wall, and I have never had a problem.  There was a thread with pictures in January 08 on this forum--Original Spencer "chipped chamber".

I don't know that we reached a definitive conclusion, but I do note that the extractor in place during firing would appear to be in a position to support a case that started to expand and probably enough to keep it from rupturing.

The cut for the long blade extractor of the 1860-65 was a serious issue with weakening the chamber of the early spencers. The short blade extractor was a big improvement in fixing the pronlem

Thanks, DJ and Herbert:

DJ, could you be more specific on the Jan 08 post, please?  I don't see one that appears to be it.

Thanks, El Supremo/ Kevin Tinny

El Supremo--
Sorry I missed your post last month.  If you search for "chipped chamber" in the Spencer forum it should come up.

Otherwise, this link might work:
