Merwin Hulbert value
« on: May 24, 2017, 06:20:59 PM »
I have the opportunity to purchase a nice MH in really decent shape.  I'd like to post a picture, but Photobucket is being obstinate.  I know it's difficult to evaluate a revolver without more info, but can you suggest a price range for me?

What's the owner want?

That's the first step.

And - if you want to keep it in decent shape and shoot it even a little - be aware that spare parts exist in other folks' revolvers, and they're pretty proud of them.

I have little knowledge regarding MH revolvers, but doesn't that say "caliber Winchester 1873"?  Isn't that 44 WCF?  Forgive my ignorance.

I don't offer a valuation without a personal inspection - there are many others who will cheerfully do that - without any knowledge whatsoever.

The piece 'looks' to be in good condition - use your own skills and evaluate it like any other used revolver - check for finish, lockup tightness, condition of the barrel, and so on and so forth.

The Pepperbox - if working - has a minor appeal to some.

If the guy is emailing you, then he 'wants' to sell - see what his best 'cash' price is and go from there.

To me, the hammer looks funny somehow.  Otherwise looks pretty nice.

 It's not a Russian Model.

I think you're at a good starting point for negotiations.

That is correct.  .44-40.

I bought it!  It's definitely 44 WCF  Serial number 23981.  Owner's dad was a game warden in Smithers BC ...  bought the revolver around 1936.  Bore is pretty decent...a little pitting through the nickel in the cylinder flutes.  Double action.  The hammer may have been replaced - certainly worked on.  Shows file marks, but the revolver functions flawlessly.
