Lee Alox tumble lube for black powder bullets
« on: February 20, 2017, 04:30:54 PM »
Does anyone think tumble lubing heeled bullets for an old Conversion with Lee Alox  would work okay, or would fouling and leading build up to fast? I have cast for years, but for inside lubed bullets.
Thanks,
Reno

To shoot with black powder or smokeless ? I have never tried Alox with black powder, but it seems to work wonderfully with my smokeless cowboy velocity loads. It might be horrilbe with black powder..maybe someone here that knows more about it than myself will post on this.

I seem to recall previous discussions where Alox was mentioned to not work well with BP.

Abiline, I found out it is not good with the Black Powder. I have used it a lot with smokeless.
Thanks to all for the repleys.

Greetings My Dear Reno

Just to pile on, "tumble-lube" methods do not apply enough of the necessary greasiness required by our BP firelocks.
One needs a "goodly amount" of the greasy-goodness to achieve a more harmonious outcome :-)

Sung to the tune of "Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts  ::)

Need gobs more lube than "panned alox" is going to give.  Grease "Is a Good Thing" (Famous TV star quote).

for my guns I go to the DD "Big Lube" bullets. Plenty of grease, but I run through my home made lube like
The Alabama Light Horse through the middle of the line at Shiloh
For reference that makes the green grass/goose paradigm look glacial.
