I recall when Winchester went under about 8 or 9 years ago the news was talking about what a big weapon the Lever Action Winchester was and how popular it used to be before everyone took to AR-15s.
Of course the Winchester/Rossi/Ubert 73/92 is not something I'd like to take into Vietnam or even Iraq or Afghanistan. BUT, can it still make a viable combat weapon to get you in and out of minor skirmishes, a travel long arm or take care of armed trespassers on your land? Whether in .45 LC, .44-40, 44 Magnum, .357 Magnum, .454 Casull.
Way I see it, the answer CAN definitely be "YES". Since the pump shotgun is still certainly a viable weapon, I see little reason the lever action rifle could not be. 1) Police used them as long range weapons well into the 1970s, 2) The .44 or .44 caliber weapons essentially make it a "slug" gun with more power, wound cavity and penetration than a handgun, 3) the carbine has 10 shot capacity in what is, by nature, a repeating rifle that can be done fairly swiftly like a shotgun pump.
There is no doubt that whatever the lever action gun can do in combat, an AR can do better. However, the one thing the lever gun has is simplicity. it's easy to operate and is more compact and lighter to carry.
