To lube or not to lube?
« on: April 15, 2014, 02:56:25 AM »
I have read and heard a lot about having to lube cast lead bullets. Being somewhat new to CAS, and not using jacketed bullets, I also hear a lot about leading of barrels. Right now I am using Ridge Rock or Missouri bullets that are pre lubed. Is this all that is needed? What about moly coated or the new spray on lubes? Has anybody used these? If so, do they work to keep the lead build up to a minimum?  What do some of you long timers use and how do you like it. Thanks in advance D. D.  8)

DD,

Your pre-lubed bullets are all that is required.  Shoot and enjoy.

You normally see leading of the barrel only when you have a bullet that is undersized, or doesn't fully obturate to completely seal the bore.  In that case, you get "flame cutting" between the bullet and barrel bore that will tend to melt, or soften sufficiently, the bullet so that it strips off onto the bore.  Just make sure you slug your bore and shoot a bullet that is 0.001" to 0.002" larger than bore diameter, and you should have no issues.
