Perhaps Ira's point is-Charles Issac's now famous broken stock Krag is no way FUBAR, you can still recognize it's a Krag!. And still quite repairable. Now a Krag that Bubba has chopped, drilled, scoped, and painted camo.... That may be FUBAR!

And gentlemen, I stand corrected. It is recognition not repair. My memory really is getting suspect.

How about for Rocky Mountain mule deer and elk?

I had a friend (RIP Jae) who took both and a lucky shot on a pronghorn (for him, not the antelope).

Who does not have a successful hunt with a Krag on their bucket list?

Thanks Pony Express!  At least somebody understood my attempt at humor!  I did have a close friend in what Niederlander called "The Big Green Gun Club" (Uncle Sam's misguided children).

You should have seen it before I replaced some action parts! The back of the striker was ground down into a cone/dome shape like one of those old Remington .22s. Extractor was held on to the bolt sleeve with a hardware store nut and bolt. Ejector, rear sight, side plate and hand guard were missing, barrel was chopped and back of the receiver drilled for an old Lyman lever sight.

So I guess with me thinking of the aforementioned antique guns that are too nice to shoot at a GAF match, or the much alluded to Uberti Krag replica that I imagine would have glistening urethaned wood, modern style blueing, some bright "colored" case hardening or "colored" oil quenched case, well, my old threadbare finish, chopped '92 krag is FUBARed compared to those guns. But yeah, not really FUBAR, but a good many of us here would probably be able to recognize a Krag even after it passed through the Govt's weapon shredder, "Captain Crunch"! :D

Speaking of Krag rifles, I have a superb sporter with really pristine metal and a nice stock that I might be interested in trading off.  I even have a few boxes of ammo which as you know is not free.  I need backup weapons for my current setup.  I currently load .38, .45 colt and .44 Colt (modern .429).  That is not to say I am not interested in any and all Cowboy calibers though . . .

OMG you killed Bambi! Seems the oldtimers had to saw a foot or two off their Krag before it was fit to do that.

Most just slapped on an '03 barrel - like the DCM did, when they were using up the remaining spares.

Got a doe a couple of years ago with mine.

Charles, it was still full length, too. The deer didn't seem to care one way or the other.

Well that's good on you Pony, and Jake, getting those old shooters out there and having them deliver the goods! I guess you get a little more velocity out of the 30" too, whether it's needed or not. My usual recreational truck/trunk/woods gun is a "carbine",  just because it stows so handily. When it comes right down to it though, I like the full length rifle, the Infantryman's weapon! :D

I thought mine was a doe when I pressed the trigger. He was a nice hybrid buck that had one antler broke off and the other was small. He was standing in front of a little bush so I couldn't see the antler. Like Pony's doe, he didn't seem to mind that my rifle was full length.

I once handle a Krag that someone had taken off the loading gate and restocked.  It took me a good 10 minutes to figure out what it was. :'(
