I'll just point out that these hats - while ex-Army surplus - are a much, much darker shade than those of the era, and you can't fade it away.

Think 'Extra-Dark Coffee' vs 'Coffee and Cream' for the difference - with the lighter color being in Service until WWII.

I wasn't aware of that. So saying that the best would be something like a reproduction of a M-1889 hat without the punched holes then put a Montana Peak crease in it and stiffen the heck out of it?

The originals were constructed of pretty decent fur felt - they kept their stiff brims nicely.

These are modern-day 'Drill Sergeant Hats' - quality's poor by comparison, and they're stiffer'n a board - making them a miserable thing to wear.

Look instead for a repro WWI-era Campaign Hat - not the Model 1889 version - the crowns and brims are different.

Vaya,

Jerry,
Stop and check with Steff to see his original campaign hats.  His are World War 1 era, and they bear very little resemblance to the modern campaign hat.  I'm in the process now of making one out of a drab colored Australian Akubra.  Steff said he can do the brim stitching.

Many of the pictures I have seen of original montana peak campaign seem to have a really high crown, peak seems somewhat pointed compared to modern drill instructor/highway patrolman hats.

Here is my grandfather in WWI. He is wearing one of these hats. Note the height of the crown.
