I have a fair amount of primitive cooking equiptment from my other reenacting days. I have a spit, tripod, grill, kettles etc. Do you want me to bring anything along?

Oh don't bring that if it's the kind with a crank you turn by hand-I'm the only Private and I'll get the job of turning the spit with  some critter Del's got slow roasting!

You can if you want but I shouldn't need anything, I have more than "The General" will haul anyway.

Del:

Things are pretty slow tonight, so I am checking out the GAF on CAS City.
Yep, I have a load of black pepper/sage breakfast pork sausage made up for the Muster in the deep freeze.  It is a traditional farm recipe we still use.  I will have some mulberry jelly to go on the excellent buscuits you bake.
And I should have a couple bottles of Bohemian (mulberry and watermelon) wine for the evening after supper desert, if you'd like.
GB offered his farm-raised hen and duck eggs too.

We would love the eggs and I'm sure some would enjoy the wine.  I wonder if we got Buffalo Bill to write the Governor if we could get you a note excusing you? ;) ;D

Dang I was looking forward to sharing food and coffee with you again, it's been way to dang long.

Our local ranges do not have room for long range stages. Can you think of ways to build GAF stages on short ranges? I am betting we could get a side match going every few months if we could figure it out. I can certaily make stages that use GAF guns and reload on the clock. What else would make the stages more GAF?

Even though you don't have room for long range, you should be able to set the targets back farther than most SASS  clubs seem to be setting them. If there's room, try NOT setting them up in neat rows with all targets the same distance and height. At the 2010 Grand Muster, they had variations like starting off the stage firing a small cannon, or a muzzle loading pistol(bonus for a hit with it). One stage had us shooting pistols through a fence from kneeling position. If you have room for enough lateral moovement, I remember another, from '09, we mover from one position to another, using different weapons, dragging a "wounded soldier" from one position to another, and even picking up a discarded spear and using it on an enemy that got too close.  Basically avoid "stand and deliver, sweep left to right , then right to left" type stages.

Good morning, Strong!

Another suggestion is to set up stages that make some sort of tactical sense, such as you have to eliminate the enemy squad before you can move and engage the next group.  Also, if you can, set up a couple of targets you can only see standing up.  Encourage the use of cover.  (Hay bales are excellent for building walls and such.)  Have fun with it!

Downsized targets simulate longer range.

Good point.  The Blunt targets we use in the Department of the Missouri are all half size.  (I'd hate to have to move a full size standing blunt target made of 3/8 or 1/2 inch steel!)

Of course, most of these suggestions won't be popular with the guys that want a stage they can shoot in 20 seconds.........
