Gallery Load for 45-60
« on: January 22, 2010, 05:30:15 PM »
Hi guys

I'm looking for a mild (very mild) load for 45-60 that I can shoot at my club's indoor range.  An old timer gave me a load for 45-70 govt that he uses  5.0 grains of Unique with a 300 gr.  The max distance in the range is 50 feet --we shoot CAS there (sans shotguns) -- we have moving Buffalo scenario coming up at next month's shoot and I'd like to pull out my '76 (Chappy) and show them how its done.

Any hints would be appreciated

Willy

The gallery load I used to load for my 45-70 trapdoor was 10.0 gr of 2400 pushing a 200 gr pure lead round nose bullet. You have got to load light weight bullets in order not to damage the backstop. This means you will have to load your rifle singly because the cartridge is too short for the brass elevator.
I see no reason why you can't use this load in a 45-60. Just remember to raise the muzzle and give your gun a slap to settle the powder at the back of the case before you fire.
