Need H&R trapdoor informaton
« on: June 19, 2009, 12:35:20 PM »
Hi Pards,
Just picked up a used H&R trapdoor carbine in 45-70 this week and want to break it down to nuts and bolts to give it a good cleaning, inspection and oiling. The gun is in great shape and looks good but I feel the need to give it that good cleaning. What I’m looking for is a site or book that will help me get this job done right. (How to brake it down step by step)
After it’s cleaned I will be reloading for it. I’m looking for some light loads, shooting about 100 to 200 yards; – being a carbine it will more than likely give a pretty good kick with the 405 gr. bullets I use in my sharps, so I’m looking for a lighter load with maybe a 300gr bullet. I would prefer to load it with smokeless powder. Any help out there?

Metaqua, look through the FAQ's on Graybeard's Outdoors.  Believe dis-assembly details are in there somewhere ... http://www.go2gbo.com/forums/index.php?topic=26264.0

If not, take a look at the schematic of a trapdoor on VTI.  It's for a Pedersoli but Trapdoors are all pretty much the same  ...

And read this ... http://www.trapdoorcollector.com/Disassembly.html

Good Luck

Personally, as long as everything was working smoothly and properly, I'd leave it alone.

About loading for it, I'd start here (although some of this data will be less critical with a modern H & R replica than with an original)

Thanks for the reply and web sites to go to and check out. I went to all of them and found good information on just about everything I need to know to get started. I'm sure there is a lots more to go. I found a book at Amazon, the 45-70 Springfield book. I ordered it and just received it yesterday . It's full of good information. Will get a chance to go through it more in detail this weekend.
   Again thanks

metequa, thanks for the reply that BROW was a help to you.  Sounds like you are on your way, including the Springfield book.
Take this to the bank ... for good accuracy shooting any Trapdoor, the 405 Hollow Base bullet is an excellent bullet.  Lee Precision makes the mold ... http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=363401

GET THIS BOOK!  http://www.the45-70book.com/The-Book-3rd-Edition-by-Spence-Pat-Wolf   No trapdoor shooter should be without it.  Neither should any serious BP shooter for that matter.
