CAS ammo question
« on: March 17, 2005, 05:16:25 PM »
I'm just about to try CAS and I'm curious about where most folks get their ammunition.  I don't have any reloading equipment and don't expect that I'll be buying any.  So, where do the folks who don't reload their own buy ammo.  I checked a couple of my local gun stores and they say they can order it for me.  Only one of them had any in stock, and it was almost $20 for a box of 50.  I'm interested in sources for .38 Special.

Here's another ammo question:  Since the maximum muzzle velocity is 1000 fps for pistol and 1400 fps for rifle, what do most folks do.  Use the exact same load for both, or keep two different loads; one for pistol and another one for rifle?  From a safety standpoint I would prefer to use the same load in both.  If so, does that put you at a disadvantage in the rifle category.

Thanks in advance,

John

I use one load for both.  A load which shoots about 900 Fps in your revolver will shoot about 1,200 Fps in a rifle.  Works real good that way.  You really don't need to be at the top end of that velocity scale.

Mike is correct. My loads of 22 grains of FFFg get 850 out of my revolvers and 1130 out of my 24 inch Marlin.

Magtech makes inexpense ammo. Black Hills makes remanufactured ammo that is inexpense also. I reload mine, so I don't know of a good source. Magtech at Midway: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=488314
Black Hills at Midway: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=390786

Hope this helps.

Before I started to load my own, I was using Magtech cowboy ammo. Their prices are reasonable and the loads are consistent. Just make sure you get Cowboy ammo as they make a full range of it (my .44 Mag ammo is also Magtech. :D).

Something to think about in the future, with .38 special a lot of people don't reload so hit the local gun shows.

Around here anyway, there is always someone who deals in bulk ammo at the gun show.  They come twice a year and you got to stock up.
