Question on Schofield clones
« on: April 17, 2009, 07:00:59 PM »
This may be way off base but I'll ask anyway.
Can home loaded brass .44 Russian blanks be fired in a .44-40 Schofield clone?
I usually shoot Colt's 1860 R&M clones for reenacting but would like to add a pair of Schofields and was just wondering.
I know 5 in 1's would work but we all load our own blanks.

Also how close are the .44 S&W American and Russian in size? I guess the American was a heeled bullet????

Havent tried it but I'll bet you could.  I know of one guy who used to talk abut firing live .44 Russian rounds out of his 44-40 Henry.  Might bulge the cases a tad but at the low pressure of blanks maybe not.  Now, finding a 44-40 Schofield clone might take some doing (or waiting  ;) )

Thanks for the reply.
I figured they'd shoot'em just wondred if the rims were large enough dia. for the extractors.

Yea, finding them for sale may be the difficult part.

For our club's many re-enactments we load 2 calibers of BLANKS: 44 Russian & 38 Special.

The Ruskie BLANKS will work in .45 LC, .44-40, .44 Special/Mag and of course .44 Russian.
We have had no problem with brass expansion. Of course these are BLANKS: Enlarged primer holes, real black powder, thin cardboard (paper)wad. Very little pressure, very little expansion.

Can't promise about the rims/extractors ......

Hope this helps.

(Emphasis on BLANKS added for the benefit of the addle-brained who might make the dangerous mistake of thinking this would be safe a substitute when using live ammo.)  ::)

We had our first show of the season today and had hoped one of the members would've brought his Schofield in 44WCF so I could try it but he didn't.

Hopefully later.
I have some .44WCF and .44 Russian I'll mic the rims and see the difference.
