At a recent match I shot some vids with my little Sony pocket digital camera.  Handed the camera to a pard to film me.  I stepped through the video frames and caught the first picture below.  The flame looks kinda odd, has a border around it as if it was photoshopped into the picture (it wasn't  :) ) - then it occurred to me that I should be able to do the same with some footage I had of shooting at a night match at Tin Star Ranch back in 2001.  This was originally filmed with a VHS camcorder, then copied to DVD.  The guns were Colt .45's and a '92 in .45, plus 12ga in a Baikal (notice how it lit up the countryside  ;D )

I only have the one available right now, but i thank Toulemne Greg for doing the type and sending it to me. I hope it qualifies Abiline, but it was a night shoot and everything true BP looks good at night. That is Phantom spotting for whatever. Since my shotgun is in the scabard, that would be a rifle shot at GFBJL last year.

Howdy, that doesn't even look real!  Awesome!  I would put that one in a class with the pic we've all seen of the cap'n'ball shooter with all the sparks/tracers.

Howdy Doody

Yup, BP looks great at night, but different cameras end up with different images. Marshal Halloway took a video on this same stage in the daylight and although it was smokey, there wasn't the big blast. The video is still here on Cas City under the videos section and titiled Gunfight Behind the Jersey Lilly. He had me shooting at night on it too, but you don't see as much downrange blast as this pic shows. I have one I bought from Mr. Quigley photographers that is really awesome. I would have to scan it and make it digital to be able to post it though.
That is why I love night shoots so much, it isn't just me, it is everyone blasting away in the dark, sometimes even hitting some steel.  ;D
It is funny that while you are shooting you don't see what others do. It just looks like regular blast and a lot of smoke when you are behind the sights. I enjoy other night shooters and some of them have come up with some great night BP shows. I am not giving away anything, but you take a load and then you top it with some course powder like 1f or Cannon and in the right amount, not too much and not too little, the sparks coming off the muzzle of still burning course powder is beautiful and makes a great show at night.
Let's see some more pictures of muzzle blasts, smoke and brimstone. I love to see others with big BP blasts. Let's face it, we shoot BP because it is fun, have fun with it.  :)

Nice flames Howdy!! I tried that at our night shoot this year, but didnt get any pics back. The video camera I had running showed fire all the way to the targets out of my 12 ga. Very cool.

For my favorite fire shot, check your Chronicle for November. I got mine today. I took the cover shot and its of my wife, Freeda Bee Mee.

Dalton, I can't wait to get my Chronicle. I want to see the cover.  :)

OK, here is a pistol shot at night. Couple years ago as I recall. I  just don't see the effect when shooting. If it weren't for someone taking a picture, I would have no idea.

Yeah, my night loads are kinda big and not practical for a match, but it sure is fun to watch the crowd back up. heh, heh.

Here is a shotgun shot

This is a early morning daytime shot with a good background to see flame.

OK! Now that is it for me, let's see what you pards have got. I know you have 'em, let's see 'em. I really enjoy them

Very nice Howdy. Practical Shmactical. Ya gotta do what ya like. I like what your doing.

I think a lot of the photo taking part is being on the right side of the shooter, at least in daylight. If the sun is at my back, I tend to get smoky pics, but if I am looking towards (not into, thats bad) I get more flame.

If I could get my little camera to take good night pics, I would almost forgo shooting my guns, and go to camera at a night shoot. Its fun getting good ones.

DM, I got my Chronicle and I love the picture. Good thing you told me who that was. Why can't they caption who the folks are? I use pic with names to memorize folks I have never met and then when I do run into them, I purt near know who they are. HOW is a shoot I have wanted to make forever. Someday.

So, that is a heck of a good daylight muzzle shot Freeda has going there. Left paw shooter too. Kewl. She qualifies as shooting spectacularly, that is for sure and good camera work too pard, right at the right instant.  :)

Thank you Howdy! If you look at the article pics inside, we are there sitting in a portrait too. Im wearing the cavalry bib shirt.

You should really try to make it next year. Its a great shoot! If not come to our Nebraska State Blackpowder Shoot next Oct. Its fun too, and I help build that one.

Ransom Gaer

Those are some great shots there guys.  Flames really are half the fun of shooting BP.  I love it.

While this shot isn't CAS it is BP.  This is from the night shoot at the 145th Anniversary Battle of Chickaumauga Reenactment held in October near the actual Chickamauga battlefield.  This is a shot of the artillery battery I am a member of.  Just for reference I normally shoot 32 to 35 grains of BP in my .45 Colt loads.  These are 3500 grain loads (1/2 lb of BP).

It still makes me grin every time I look at this picture.  It was taken with a digital camera that has a video function and this picture was discovered when one of the members of the battery was looking at each still in the video.
