It looks as though the 2 day, stand alone, WWI Wild Bunch Match isn't going to happen. The following is an excerpt from an e-mail I got from Major Matt Lewis in reply to my question about it's status and his situation with the sprint layoffs, " The way things are playing out though, I am thinking the WW1 match is going to be a "No Go" because if I am laid off, I will be protecting income, and if I am not, I will be working my ass off."

I sure wish I could but I only get 40 hours of PTO a year with this new job. I probably won't make the Muster again.  :(

ARRRRG!

There are no such decorations as "The Victoria's Cross and Congressional Medal of Honor"!

The UK awards the Victoria Cross as its highest award for valor "in the face of the enemy". While the United States of America Awards the Medal of Honor for "Conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against any enemy of the United States".

I'm sure that your error in correctly naming these two decorations; the highest that a service member of the United States and the UK can receive was not intended to insult the recipients of these medals but was rather just a case of very poor typing and extremely poor editing. I should hope that it would be fixed, now that the error has been pointed out.

Thank you for pointing this out to me. You are the first to do so. I can blame it on ignorance and poor editing on my part. I had caught the error and corrected it in most of my own documents but haven't corrected it in this thread.

No problem, I hate to see Congress get any more undue credit then they already claim, thanks for correcting it.

I'm gonna add this and ask from time to time.  Most have been to Cosies Corner and seen some of the pictures, plus many have been around when I've been cooking before, just let me know what folks would like to have for items at the meals at the fort.  I most likely will do the CFS again on Thursday night because it's both a favorite when ever I make it and I can always cook some more pretty easy when folks show up later.

At the Grand Muster, are "battle rifles" fired as part of a main match stage or side matches?

The GAF Grand Muster is shot in accordance with the Battle Rifle rules and guidelines, using the class structure detailed in the "GAF Class Structure and Battle Rifle Standards" entry stickied at the top of this page.  http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,17271.0.html

Main match stages are shot with the battle rifle if the competitor is entered in one of the Battle Rifle categories!

And I'm here to tell you it is grand fun firing 100 or so rounds from a .577/.450 Martini-Henry or other such "portable cannon" ....even with reduced loads .... as my poor shoulder can attest!
(Also, if they could speak, any number of gongs that weren't supposed to be knock-downs would likely tell you the same thing ....  ;D )

.577/.450 Martini-Henry cartridge alongside its l'il American cousin, the .45-70 Govt. .....

And, I can tell you, from expierence, that a full load from a .577/.450 Martini-Henry will turn most steel plates into bowls!

It's funny to watch Zulu and see the tribesmen holding those up (not shouldered) and fireing them. Anyone who's shot one know the recoil they have. If you fire 100 rounds out of one in a day, pat youself on the back! You can use the arm that fell off to do it!

Well, I do shoot reduced loads to stay within the maximums specified in the GAF Battle Rifle rules (i.e about 60 gr BP and 405gr bullets, rather than the service load of 85gr BP and 480gr bullet) .... and shooting that many rounds is spread out over a day and a half.
(Mind you, that does make a bit of a flinch a decided possibility on the second day ..... ;) )

After a day and a half of sustained firing by the 139 effective defenders of Rorke's Drift (during which they expended almost 20,000 rounds) the most prevalent injuries among the British soldiers were burnt hands (rifle barrels were actually reported to be visibly glowing during some of the night actions) and dislocated shoulders!

The barracks at Fort Hartsuff only holds 40 and I got the first 2 registrations for the 2009 Grand Muster today. You might want to start thinking about getting your registrations in early to guarantee your place in the barracks.
