Getting Delmonico with the program
« on: March 25, 2008, 11:47:10 AM »
Greetings, Commander US Scout, Col. Pitspitr, all other Commanders and fellow Troopers:

It has come to my attention that our illustrious Commander of the Commissary Department has no rank!

I propose that this be changed ASAP.  I feel that he should carry the rank fitting his job - AT LEAST that of Major.  The rest of us (Commanders) within our Departments are Lt. Colonels, so perhaps he should be as well.  We all know his accomplishments.  I do believe he has joined the ranks of the Nebraska Militia.

What say you?

Your Ob'dt. S'vt.,

Bvt. Lt.Col. JC "Steel Horse Bailey" GAF # 98
Commander, Central District, Department of the Atlantic

Also may want to reconcile his GAF #, there are two assigned to him.
Unless he needs both, that is. ;D

Generalissimo Delmonico has a certain ring to it!  But it's a mouthful ... which may be good considering his forte'.  ;D

Does having two numbers means he gets to go thru the pay line again?

With Generalissimo as a title I would need a big pistol with nickle plating and ivory grips and some fancy engraving. ;D

Does having two numbers means he gets to go thru the pay line again?

And the chow line. ;D

Might I suggest the age old title of "Great Grand High Poo-Bah of the Q.M. Corps.;D
- Captain, "Palmetto Riflemen" & "New York Zouaves."
- Charles Devens Jr. Camp No. 10, Sons of Union Veterans.
- Micah J. Jenkins Camp No. 164, Sons of Spanish American War Veterans.

Corporal Cookie:  I like that, but he needs to be a Major!

What say you, Col. Pitspitr?  After all, he IS in your Department.  How about you, Gen. US Scout?  Opinions?

Or, since it is my idea, can I have the honour of giving him a Battlefield Camp Promotion?

A cook would not be an officer.  He could be a Sgt. with no problem.  A junior officer would be appointed to supervise the food preparation and account for the quantities use &c.  He could be a professional chef hired by the Officers for their Mess.  Just don't see where he could be a cook and a Major at the same time!  Of course that is the military historian in me speaking.  Gen. Scout can do what he chooses as that is always the CO's privilege!  ;D

Dr. Bob, Sir!

Were Delmonico SIMPLY a cook, I'd agree wholeheartedly.

However, if you look on the official roster, you'll find that he is "Commander, Commissary Department" and , as such, should be more than even a junior officer as you correctly stated for a supervisor and accountant of supplies.  He is a one man show.  The whole enchilada.  Le Grande Frommage!   And that is why I think he should be at least a Major!  And unlike the REST of us who simulate MOST of our duties and such, (not to belittle ANYONE, like webmaster, Muster planning, Commander, etc.)  he actually DOES something VERY important ... and does it well!

I thought US Scout fixed that.

Last I checked, you were #344.  I removed you from whatever later number you had.

It's corrected on the GAF Muster posted here in The Barracks, but may not have been corrected on the website yet.  Once Bvt Lt Col Eagle Eyes Jefferson updates our roster and provides Bvt Col Bull Schmidt a copy for posting, we'll get that fixed, too.

Delmonico was appointed the Brigade's Commissary Officer.

Within a regiment, the duties of commissary were usually assigned to a lieutenant.  At the brigade or division level these duties might be performed by a captain.

Given Del's culinary expertise, this suggests that he was a cook who successfully rose up through the ranks - which is quite an accomplishment in its own right.

I hereby confirm Delmonico as the Brigade Commissary Officer and appoint him a Brevet Captain.  With good behavior he will almost certainly be promoted to major (in 10 or 12 years).  I'm afraid if I promote him to major right away it'll go to his head and effect the cooking.

Gen. US Scout,

Thank you, Sir!

Captain Delmonico, let me be the first to congratulate you on your new rank.  Of course, with rank comes responsibility, but I know you can handle that and not let this go to your head.

Captain Crunch ... I like that better than Corporal Cookie!  Dr. Bob, feel free to call him Captain Coffee - or even Cap'n. Java for short.  ::)

Major Matt, of course you do know that, unlike what is written in history, that it was REALLY Captain Crunch who actually discovered what was then called the "Sandwich Islands."  Yes, it was both important and sad, for it was there that the original Captain Crunch met his fate at the hands of angry natives.  They were ...

... Cereal Killers.  :o  ::)  ;)
