Telegraph down?  Sound like a problem for the Signal Corps. Any flag wavers around?  Have you tried wigwag? Semifore?  Anyone read heliograph?   Any of our scouts who read smoke (no not that kind of smoke! ::)

I regret this is out of the Ordnance Dept. area of expertise.

RattlesnakeJack;

Thanks for the warm welcome!  I am very happy to have become a member of this fine organization. ;D

My wife, Boss Lady SASS#8032L, wanted to make me a very special dress outfit for the 2006 Convention. I suggested the day uniform of a Lt.-Colonel of the 7th. Calvary, as i wanted to honor, one of the 2 Canadians, both officers, that died at the Little Bighorn on June 25,1876.

I am quoting his Brief biograhpy from the book: "With Custer At The Little Bighorn" by William O. Taylor.

Quote:

First Lieutenant William W. Cooke, of Hamilton, Canada,.
Served as Lieutenant in the 24th. New York Cavalry during the Civil War and for gallant
service received three brevet ranks: Captain, Major, Lieutenant-Colonel, mustered out
June 25, 1866 and apppointed 1st. Lieutenant July 31st, 1867. He was Regimental Adjt.
of the Seventh Cavalry from 1871 until his death June 25, 1876. His remains were brought
back the following year, 1877 and were buried at Hamilton, Canada where a Grand Army Post
was named after him.

Unquote.

If anyone has anty further information, I would like to obtain it.

I would also like to know if there are insignia that shows his brevet ranks
& if they would have been worn on his uniform? As Regimental Adjt. is there
an insignia, or sash designating that position? I wish to wear all the appropriate
medals, that this officer was entitled to wear. I already have a Civil War Campaign Medal (reproduction)
& would like to know if he would have received an Indian Wars Campaign Medal?

I would really appreciate any expertise that can be directed to me, as this a new
& exciting direction for me.

I did serve in the Canadian Grenadier Guards 1963-65 & am currently an Ordinary member of
The Royal Canadian Legion - Branch 329, Tottenham, Ontario.

I have posted a picture & it's Microsoft Word, as it was scanned into our computer.
I hope it can bbe opened! ::)

Sorry for not including this with the last message. I could be wrong on this, but believe I'm correct, but he Brevet Rank would have only been used when on Courts Martial duty, or some special duty he was assigned to. He would have used his regular rank of 1st Lieutenant.

As far as any insignia for Regimental Adjutant's, it's the standard officers uniform, since as far as I know there was no badge for the office on the Regimental Level. There was an Adjutant General's Corps Insignia, but that was not found on the Regimental Level, as Adjutants for Regiments were drawn from Lieutenant's within the unit and not from the A.G. Corps.

Sorry I have the Adjutant General's Corps Museum here in Columbia at Fort Jackson, and I also spent 4 years as a Brigade Adjutant in reenacting so I took a special interest in that branch and the Regimental Level Adjutants. So I think these facts are correct, however I'll be the first to admit that I don't know everything and there could easily be something out there that I have missed.

No problem, if I am able to find anything additional out I will be glad to send it along. Another option if you want more information would be to order his service records from the National Archives. If you want to email me I can possibly try and help you get these records. My email is pss_nyz@yahoo.com

I read that when Cooke's body was discovered, only one of the the sidewhiskeres had been scalped ....
