That is my understanding as well. I should have been more careful in my choice of words. And you're sure right that it would deffinately be a unique look. :o

A little TOO unique for MY money!  ;)

Where do y'all hear about historical trivia like that, anyway!  Reprints of the original reports?  (I would assume.)

Big Jim:

What we are bantering back and forth about is the rather impressive facial hair sported by Cooke:

Pitspitr suggested that you need to grow 'em in order to do a convincing job as Cooke, and then I joined in with the quip that your look would a lot more unique if you aspired to his appearance after the Battle of the Little Big Horn.  (When his body was found, one of his cheeks had been "scalped" - considered more desireable as a trophy than the usual topknot, I suppose .....)

Now for a bit more Victorian-era trivia .....

These exaggerated muttonchop-type whiskers were know as "dundrearies", having been made famous by the character "Lord Dundreary" played by English comic actor Edward A. Sothern in a very popular stage play of that era -"Our American Cousin" ....  Here's a picture of Sothern as Lord Dundreary -

Rattlesnake Jack Robson, Scout, Rocky Mountain Rangers, North West Canada, 1885
Major John M. Robson, Royal Scots of Canada, 1883-1901
Sgt. John Robson, Queen's Own Rifles of Canada, 1885
Bvt. Col, Commanding International Dept. and Div.  of Canada, Grand Army of the Frontier

"The American Cousin"

Wasn't that what President and Mrs. Lincoln were watching at Ford's Theater?  If so, I understand that it was VERY popular and quite funny.

RattlesnakeJack;

Thanks for your reply. I'd forgotten how dark & bloody a sense of humor could be on the frontier! :D

I was taken aback by what I thought was disrespect for a fallen soldier. I blaim that on the
fact that I am currently on drugs for a badly pulled back muscle, which puts on a whole new light on pain!!! >:( >:(

As I said I want to Honor him, not look like him & after seeing the picture, I will definitely not be growing that expanse
of facial hair! ::) ::)  Besides Boss Lady gave me the following reasons suggesting it wouldn't be a good idea:

1. The LOOK + a raised Eybrow!!! ::)
2. If you do grow it, it will give me something to hang onto when I try to make a point with you. Possibly a headbutt? ;D
3. You're ugly enough already! :D :D

Thanks for the welcome to the group. I'm looking forward to learning a lot! 8)

Sounds like YOUR Boss Lady is like many of OUR  Boss Ladies!  ;)

Sometimes I talk out loud about shaving off my beard, which gets that look from My Lovely Bride. I think, but do not say, "It's my futzing beard and I'll shave it off if I want to." I haven't shaved it off yet.   :-\
