Just listened to the surf medley.  Brought back memories of going to hear Dick Dale and the Deltones at the Blelly Up in Solana Beach CA.
That was when I lived in Oceanside, and was going though my conversion form Beach Dude to Cowboy.  Still like Surf music now and then.

Funny you mention him.  He came up in conversation yersterday.  He's still out there jammin.  The last album of his I bought is called Tribal Thunder and is most well known fer a tune called Nitro, but the coolest thing on it is a slow acoustic version of Miserlou at the very end.  He named it something else, but ya know it when ya hear it.

Got this off his website this morning after you got me thinking about him:

“I want to thank all my music lovers for supporting me these last 3 months
with your Wonderful heartfelt letters praying for my speedy recovery
as I battle this demon that Attacks so many other friends and their loved ones.
So for now, no touring for a while....  I have rectal cancer....
I had to undergo 6 weeks of chemotherapy and radiation
 every day, Monday through Friday.
Now I have rested and healed another 6 weeks from the Radiation and Chemotherapy.
April 4, 2008 my surgeon Dr Hoffman and 2 other surgeons
will cut out the tumor at Cedars - Sinai Medical Center Hospital in Hollywood, Ca.
I will have chemo afterwards to finish up.
Then I will kick back and heal….
Then I will go back into reconstructive surgery and more Chemo.
Then go to Hawaii and surf....
I again, thank all of you from my deep within and promise me, keep smiling…. D”

Hope he pulls through!  He’s a definite legend!

I got a good feeling that he will.

    Here's some Dick Dale trivia...
Which of his songs did he actualy sing in.  It's old, not well known, and it ain't "King of Surf Guitar".  That was some ladies but not him.  This song has full vocals by Dick.  Good luck ;D

Dick Dale   King of the Surf Guitar.  What about the "Ventures"?

About a month or so ago I downloaded their Greatest Hits album off the Internet.  One of my favorites was Telstar, but prefer the original by the Tornados.
Another cut was Wipe Out, which brought back memories of a girl that used to dance, in a white fringed dress, at a Milwaukee bar called The Sawmill Saloon, when the house band played it.  Boy, that was more that 25 years ago.

There's some great surf music on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack.  Comanche stands out in my mind as well as Bustin Surfboards.  Can't remember who did Comanche, but that sax was smokin'.

Pipeline's a good one Tex.  Can't imagine them an Larance Welk.  Did they use the bubble machine?  An what was that lotion they was always sellin on the in studio commecials.  Remember the lady doin the spots, just not the product.  I think those were the last on show commercials ever.

BTW, it was the Revels that did Comanche--had ta look it up, it was driving me crazy.

if ya watch the remake of the beach blanket bingo movies, with Annette and Frankie (in the 70-80's sometime) there is Dick playing Pipeline with Stevie Ray Vaughan....very cool, altho I feel the definitive is the Chantays...

in 1983 I went to a concert billed as "Surf City" headlined by Jan and Dean. along with them was"

Chantays: Pipeline
Surfaris: Wipeout, Surfer Joe
Ventures: Hawaii 5-0
Challengers: K-39
Dick Dale: Miserlou

Dick did outstanding set, and during one song, the rest of the band sat out, and he went around and played every instrument on the stage....VERY WELL!

I thought Jan and Dean would be fluff, but they really sang, and the audience was on their feet. I think that was the peak of Jan's recovery

Trivia:  look at some of your old record albums during the 60-70's and even early 80's and you will see album cover design by:
Dean O. Torrance (of Jan and ...) Only ones I can think off top of my head was Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's  My Dog Teddy and the first Circle unbroken album....but he was very prolific...

Curley who was a surfer in them days....used to go see Bruce Browne movies, and in those days he did the naration live..

Because Del put it in my head.  I love Chuck Berry!

Maybelline, why can't you be true?
Oh Maybelline, why can't you be true?
You've started back doing the things you used to do

As I was motivatin' over the hill
I saw Maybelline in a coup de ville
A Cadillac a-rollin' on the open road
Nothin' will outrun my V8 Ford
The cadillac doin' 'bout ninety-five
She's bumper to bumber rollin' side by side

Maybelline, why can't you be true?
Oh Maybelline, why can't you be true?
You've started back doing the things you used to do

Pink in the mirror on top of the hill
It's just like swallowin' up a medicine pill
First thing I saw that Cadillac grille
Doin' a hundred and ten gallopin' over that hill
Offhill curve, a downhill stretch
Me and that Cadillac neck by neck

Maybelline, why can't you be true?
Oh Maybelline, why can't you be true?
You've started back doing the things you used to do

The Cadillac pulled up ahead of the Ford
The Ford got hot and wouldn't do no more
It then got cloudy and it started to rain
I tooted my horn for a passin' lead
The rain water blowin' all under my hood
I knew that was doin' my motor good

Maybelline, why can't you be true?
Oh Maybelline, why can't you be true?
You've started back doing the things you used to do

The motor cooled down, the heat went down
And that's when I heard that highway sound
The Cadillac a-sittin' like a ton of lead
A hundred and ten a half a mile ahead
The Cadillac lookin' like it's sittin' still
And I caught Maybelline at the top of the hill

Maybelline, why can't you be true?
Oh Maybelline, why can't you be true?
You've started back doing the things you used to do

Fact is I'll take the one Chuck ordered. ;D

As I was motivatin'
Back in town
I saw a Cadillac sign
Sayin' "No Money Down"
So I eased on my brakes
And I pulled in the drive
Gunned my motor twice
Then I walked inside
Dealer came to me
Said "Trade in you Ford
And I'll put you in a car
That'll eat up the road
Just tell me what you want
And then sign on that line
And I'll have it brought down to you
In a hour's time"

I'm gonna get me a car
And I'll be headed on down the road
Then I won't have to worry
About that broken - down, ragged Ford

"Well Mister I want a yellow convertible
Four - door de Ville
With a Continental spare
And a wide chrome wheel
I want power steering
And power brakes
I want a powerful motor
With a jet off - take
I want air condition
I want automatic heat
And I want a full Murphy bed
In my back seat
I want short - wave radio
I want TV and a phone
You know I gotta talk to my baby
When I'm ridin' alone"

Yes I'm gonna get that car
And I'm gonna head on down the road
Yeah, then I won't have to worry
About that broken - down, ragged Ford

"I want four carburetors
And two straight exhausts
I'm burnin' aviation fuel
No matter what that cost
I want railroad air horns
And a military spot
And I want a five - year guarantee
On everything I got
I want ten - dollar deductible
I want twenty dollar notes
I want thirty thousand liability"
That's all she wrote

I got me a car
And I'm headed on down the road
No money down
I don't have to worry
About that broken - down, ragged Ford

'Nother Berry classic with very suggestive lyrics. :o :o :o ;D

Riding along in my automobile
My baby beside me at the wheel
I stole a kiss at the turn of a mile
My curiosity running wild
Cruising and playing the radio
With no particular place to go

Riding along in my automobile
I was anxious to tell her the way I feel
So I told her softly and sincere
And she leaned and whispered in my ear
Cuddling more driving slow
With no particular place to go

No particular place to go
So we parked way out on the cocamo
The night was young and the moon was gold
So we both decided to take a stroll.
Can you imagine the way I felt?
I couldn’t unfasten her safety belt

Riding along in my calaboose
Still trying to get her belt unloose
All the way home I held a grudge
For the safety belt that wouldn’t budge
Cruising and playing the radio
With no particular place to go
"Finest partner I ever had.  Cleans his paws and buries his leavin's.  Lot more than some folks I know."

Not a big hit, but it gets me movin.  Hail Hail Rock n Roll is the same as No Particular Place to Go, but I enjoy the lyrics in both.

thinking back about all that Rock and Roll reminds me of the sock hops they used to have at school after the football and basketball games after games on Friday nights,  pull off yer shoes, roll up a cuff on yer levi's and cut loose.  ;D
One song I can remember being played there and at the skating rink, a lot,   The lion sleeps tonight,  seem like it was awful popular.
when our school intergated in 1966, the sock hops ended,  They weren't gonna take no chances of mixed couple dancing.
We done it for Dixie,  nothing else
