What Black Powder do you use?
« on: June 19, 2007, 09:41:19 AM »
I have been looking for powder and I was wondering what you guys use or where you get yours from? It can get expensive and since im fairly new to the Black Powder guns I dont know of all the good places to get things from.

I use Schuetzen, I've had good luck with it and it's available locally.

This instant (because I bought 10 cans) Goex Cowboy in everything exept Shotshells in which I normally load Goex FFg.   But at the 60gr volumes for mild CAS loads Cowboy works fine in shotshells and would allow you to keep just one powder on hand.  I have loaded Cowboy in .36 Cap and Ball, .44 Cap and Ball, .38 special, .44 special, .44-40 and .45 Colt (I've used it in 12 ga shotshell too).  I haven't tried it in .44 Russian or .44 Colt yet because I have loaded ammo.  FFFg might be better in the smaller .44 Russian to get the pressure up preventing blow back.

Looks like my loading menu also
Have had good results with both the Cowboy and FFG Goex. However I started using Shuetzen in my shotshells recently just to save a buck or three a pound.   I get mind from Back Creek Gun Shop.  Splitting a case with another pard.

Until my lkast can is gone(shortly, I got 1/2 can FFG left) I have been using Elephant BP in FFG and FFFG. I lucked into 15 Lbs about 7 years ago at a BPCR shoot. Guy was getting out og BP shooting and I got all 15 cans for a ten dollar bill. It was 3 years old then the cans are marked 1997. I'm crying because Elephant BP is gone, never to return. So I guess I'll go with Graf & Son.

Howdy All,

I have a pair of 51 conversions in .38.  I debated using .38 Long colt (more authentic) versus 38 Special.  I purchase Goex locally.  Having used full FFG loads in 45 LC, I decided the 38 Special round with its longer case would add more kick, smoke and boom.  I also use Goex FFFG now with the smaller (38 vs 45) case as it packs a bit more snap.  :)  I have heard that Goex is dirtier than the rest, but I don't know any better?!

Hay Joey, I buy from Deer Creek, by the case, best deal I know of.  I shoot whatever's cheapest, for Cowboy shootin' no sense paying extra for a tiny bit more quality that you might not need.  Yer choice, o'course.

Hey Goatlips,
What is Deer Creek selling now?  I got some Dragon from them several years ago but I heard that is all gone.
He any good?

Always been a GOEX man myself.  In fact, I now have a chance to shoot up a 30+ year old can of FFFG from when the company was known as Gearhart-Owen Industries, Inc. and made the stuff in Moosic, PA.  But I shoot FFG in everything else.

Hay Critter,

Last batch I got was Lidu, comes in the same type can as the old Dragon but has a paper label instead of the yaller painted one with the lil' rebel on it.  I can't tell the difference from Dragon, but I don't shoot the long range rifle stuff.  Might some day though, then I'll have to pay more attention.  I think they still carry Wano, the german stuff in the plastic bottles, same price as the Chineeese and might make some folks feel better about the origin.

See ya pard

During my CAS "career", I've used an odd pound or two of Goex cartridge, sveral cases of Elephant (2f & 3f), one case of Schuetzen (2f &3f), and now working on a case of Kik.

So far, I have no complaints on any...it all goes "Boom" & makes the target go "clang" rather than "pop" - "ding".
I've found either 2f or 3f to work satisactorily, but not optimumily, in all chamberings from .38 S&W to 45-70 and 12 GA.

Some powder measures / flasks may not work as well with 2f as 3f.

Local availability and cost are likely your limiting factors. As a beginner you may not be ready to commit to ordering a case (25 pounds) as many of the true-faith purchase.

Best wishes and Enjoy the ride!

Call them. You can buy as little as 10 Lbs. Free shipping if you get 25 Lbs.
I use Schuetzen but he has Swiss and Goex.

I used to use Goex for years, then the local supplier stoped selling it and I had to order it.  Best thing ever happened to me.  I get all mine from Graf's. Primarily there house brand which is schuetzen, and swiss for the 45-70 and 3f swiss for the 38 long colts as it gives a bit more "kick"  Compared to Goex, I like the Schuetzen better, though it's not that big of a differance.  The true king is Swiss, but dang it's twice as high.

I use GOEX exclusively. I found a local outlet years ago but he finally closed shop in the late 80s I had a good supply on hand (This was before hazmat and osha and all them other D--n  gov't entities decided we needed to be protected from ourselves.) that lasted until I found another nearby supplier. from which I recently supplimented my cache and am now set for awhile. Now if OSHA would do the dodo bird thing along with all the other nosie gov't angencies.

Have been using Goex cowboy in everything from .36 cap and ball to .45 Colt.  Was using Goex 2f for 12 ga.  I am trying Graf and Sons 2f mostly because of availablity.  I can get locally.  I am experimenting with Swiss 1 1/2f for the long range shootin'.  No complaints with any of them.

I thought Elephant Powder was a thing of the past. Are they making it again, or should I say importing it again? I bought 15 Pounds of it in 2000 and it's about all gone, i used the last of it to load some 45-70's the other day. If it's still avaiable where can I get it?
